We started laying in our winter hay supply this past weekend. We’ve had to keep hay year-round since our pasture was too beaten down by the sheep this year, but for winter, we have to stock up even more as all the animals will need it, not just Beulah Petunia. We stock it up to the rafters under the porch, and more is kept down in the bottom in sheds and shelters and under tarps and everywhere we can put it. It’s hard to get hay when it’s snowing.
Buttercup is enjoying his new hay tower for napping, but soon the chickens will get up there and start making nests. They get really discombobulated as one hay bale after another comes down, disrupting their attempts to decorate their apartments!

Buttermilk must be well-trained. I’m afraid Emma the Calico Queen would scratch at the bales until the hay was spread all over the ground!

Do you foresee a barn in your future?? I know it takes time when you are starting a farm. We have lived on our place 7 years and just started our barn last year for our horses. We got it under roof last fall and we are still working on it. Hope to have it completed this year. We built it out of rough lumber and it suits us very much. My two cats, Coal and CoCo are supervising the operation, as they follow my husband everywhere his goes. I love my cats. We also have Miss Missy, but she is the Queen and does not follow you anywhere. Good luck with your new addition.

Rosanne, I hope we can build a barn next year. We need one very badly. It does all take time!

Who hauls all those bales around? You??? Along with everything else you do everyday? I can certainly see how you maintain your girlish figure.

No, I am not the one who hauls the hay around!

:woof: Its a wonderful feeling having hay for the winter. Not sucha fun job at the time. Sweaty, stuck with hay pieces and just plain dirty. However, its a great feeling knowing everyone is set for winter, inside and out!
Hang in there the barns coming!

:snuggle: With the dry weather we have been having, and the hay under the porch, I would probably worry about internal combustion, or someone tossing a cigarette out,but I realize, too, you gotta do whatcha gotta do!I know that’s horrible to think about, but just in case it hadn’t already crossed your mind.(We’ve had a house fire recently.)

Nice picture – I love orange and orange and white tabbies. I liked the tuxedo kitty on the porch in your dirty jobs post. Maybe someday you could do a cast of characters for your cats? I would love to see them all. I also love your new calf and her name is just perfect. I was wondering where and how you store their grain?

Suzanne McMinn says:
Cheryl, we store their feeds (for all the animals) wherever we can, just like the hay! We need a barn.
