Crooked Little Egg

The Crooked Little Hen lays one pretty blue egg every day in this nest she dug out for herself in an old chair at the side of the porch. I need to get rid of the chair, but I hate to take her nest away! (And no, I’m not going to let her hatch a nest as her defect could be passed down to her chicks.)

  1. Melinda in Washington State says:

Let her keep her chair. Wonderful egg.

  2. Barbee' says:

But it is such a cozy, comfortable chair nest. The lap of chicken luxury. Too cute for words. Another bit of the story book. Let her keep it. Pleeease! She is so clever. :chicken:

  3. Sheila Z says:

I’ve got a chick with a crooked foot. Looks like a genetic defect rather than an injury. So far it’s still able to get around. Not too sure about it’s future though. A foot may be more critical to survival than a crossed beak.

  4. Nancy in Iowa says:

Aw, come on, she’s earned the right to that chair! She holds down the porch fort for you, looking in your windows to make sure there are no intruders. She could probably scare any away!!! :chicken:

  5. Rose H says:

You’re just not looking hard enough – that chair has the words ‘Crooked Little Hen’ running right the way through it.
    :chicken:

  6. propwashz says:

What defect? She is a most perfect Crooked Little Hen…maybe her dream is of chicks of her very own!

  7. Carol Langille says:

but….but…..her ‘defect’ hasn’t caused her any problems other than the other uppity ‘perfect’ hens won’t let her in the Chicken Yard Club! If you let her hatch some babies who have her ‘defect’, she would have someone like her and more accepting of her. And her boyfriend, the Rooster, is strong and maybe his genes would overcome the defective gene in her. Right?? Right, Suzanne??? And if she had babies, you could make them all pets and train them to a litter box and they could live inside with the cats and kids…right???

  8. Cheryl LeMay says:

You could always put other hens eggs under her for hatching if she decides to go broody.

  9. DragonLady says:

How cute is that? Bless her little heart!

  10. CindyP says:

Awwww….the other hens just don’t know what they’re missing, them being all that and uppity by not letting her be part of them. She gets a comfortable seat for nesting and being on a throne above them!

  11. catslady says:

Awwww I’m with Carol – maybe just one little egg to hatch!!!!

  12. Grace Reynolds says:

How precious is that? We should all be so lucky to have a chair like that on our porch. 🙂

  13. TX Lady says:

Suzanne I once had a little hen that everyday, climbed the support post, flew over the fence and went to the table on my back porch and layed me an egg. Every afternoon when I went to check the water and feed and to lock the Ladies up, she was at the gate, waiting to be let back in. One day I noticed that she had a gold necklace on her neck…I couldn’t figure for the life of me what it was and when I finally captured her, she had a ring from a canning jar on her neck…obviously she had been eating from the jar of seed corn on the same table where she laid her eggs. Some how she dislodged the ring and obviously wore it for the day….I love your stories because they bring back such good memories.

  14. highlandviewpantry says:

Give that poor little chicken some good eggs to sit on.

  15. Elizabeth says:

I just love the story of the crooked little hen, and now she wants to raise a family, how cute is that! You really should write a children’s book about the Crooked Little Hen, it would be a BEST SELLER! :dancingmonster:

  16. Mary says:

What a sweet cozy nest…a down home added touch to the porch. I hope you are able to keep it.

  17. Linda Goble says:

Can you switch out her eggs from other chicken and let her become a mommy. Do you think she would know they aren’t hers. Just put a mark on the ones you put in the nest and take the other she lays out every day. It is very cute of her. :chicken:

  18. Barbee' says:

    It’s a pretty little egg, isn’t it.
