Look at that! My chickens are so thoughtful. I set this pumpkin out by a fodder shock at the bottom of the porch steps and they started carving out a jack-o-lantern right away!

The chickens are after the seeds. They know what the best part is. Seeds from the concurbit family are high in protein and naturally control internal parasites. The chickens know how to get to the good stuff. Power to the chickens! I say let the chickens at them since anything you can make with a pumpkin you can also make with butternut squash. Butternut squash has better flavor and texture than coarse old field pumpkins. As far as I’m concerned those big pumpkins are best left to the chickens after they have served as decor. The little pie pumpkins are another story, they are more like squash in texture and are good for human food.

Now that is positive thinking, it made me laugh ’cause I might have been a little piffed at the chickens.

Looks like your chickens have been watching Martha Stewart—check out that delicate and even scallop around the edge’s opening. I bet they were preparing a feast for the animals not invited to the 2010 Party on the Farm. You might expect Sam Squirrel and Rocky Raccoon to grace your porch shortly, unless Coco the Giant Puppy has rolled up the Welcome mat.

Our chickens have been very considerate. They have only consumed the pumpkins we put on our picnic table. The rooster even gets up there and crows his thanks. lol The ones at the bottom of the steps they have left alone….thus far.

Free-range chickens and pumpkins do not mix. Unless you intend for the pumpkins to be chicken feed. 🙂

Hey Suzanne!
I had noticed that they had started a small hole in that pumpkin when I was at your party Saturday! It didn’t take them long to get to the seeds! :chicken:
A neighbor down the road from me put some dried corn hanging from their mailbox for a fall decoration. I drove by the other day and one of their chickens was standing there eating the corn. Two days later it’s just the empty cob hanging there! :chicken:

Oh, I am so glad to know about this. I was planning on getting pumpkins but now maybe not! My girls did a great job this summer of keeping the sweet potato vines and geraniums trimmed back, way back sometimes!
