Hunkering Down

Feb
2

Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow today, which heralds an early spring! I am EXCITED!!!! However. We are expecting 55 mile per hour winds today and crashing temperatures (after the lovely 50 degrees yesterday). The forecast includes power outages and lots of crochet time. Good luck, wherever you are! Winter’s not done with us yet.

We are getting the teaser today in Central VA…66 degrees…tonight and tomorrow will be a different story. *sigh*

  2. Teri says:

Ours was last week – on Friday we were outside playing catch football and messing with the goats in t-shirts and shorts. Saturday started downhill and the last two mornings it’s been around 18 below zero. thankfully we’re tucked in between hills so we don’t get the wind they’re getting in the open. We’ve had 2 days of late starts and I think my animals are hoping for an early spring!

  3. Heidi says:

It’s almost as if February is just messing with your head now, isn’t it? Good luck keeping the power on.

  4. Heidi says:

Well, on the plus side, the snow family we made last weekend (excellent packing snow conditions!) is frozen solid as a rock! We’re placing bets as to how long they’ll last.

  5. Nancy Stickler says:

It looks like an ice village here! Scary stuff that ice!

  6. joycee says:

55mph winds and 30’s… that makes the wind chill -brrrr! Hope you don’t have power outages. We missed the ice so everything stayed on yesterday. 7 degrees this morning and a -4 predicted for tonight. Nothing to do but hunker down and eat!

  7. CindyP says:

The storm passed through here overnight…a couple feet of snow, DRIFTS. We have winds with windchill of 0 and the snow blowing around. No power loss though! Thank goodness.

Hunker down and crochet those baby blankets 🙂

  8. Martha in KS says:

Wind chill -10, temp 5 degrees. 9-12 inches of snow yesterday. Waiting for Craigslist guy with snowblower to free me. Another day under the quilt reading. YIPPEE!

  9. mother of a ROCKSTAR says:

Today it’s gonna be 48. Gusty winds and 24 tonight. I guess the children will be late again tomorrow. With the big melt down going on it’s slippery, icy, and a real mess out. Suzanne, I miss hearing from Clover…How is she? I just love her grand kids. Hope you keep your power on….I just got back from the gas station “just in case”.

We had a blizzard here yesterday! It’s still snowing a bit. So pretty but those winds howling in the night mixed with snow thunder are a bit unnerving. Hope you all fair well.

  11. Miss Becky says:

Ha! what’s now leaving SE Wisconsin is most likely heading your way. I cannot see the top of my 6 foot tall backyard fence. the entire city is shut down as no roads are passable as of this moment. gale force winds but we never lost power which is amazing. I’ve never seen a blizzard like this in all of my 56 years. but I’m feeling that Spring is going to come early this year. if for no other reason than we deserve it. stay warm Suzanne and yes, hunker down. this one’s a doozie.

Please no one take offense to this, but, This is why I love living in the south! Its 34 here and that is cold to us!! Hope you all make it through it alright everyone seems pretty prepared!

Funny you should use the expression “hunkering down,” because just yesterday I looked up the origins of that phrase (it comes from a Scottish word meaning crouch down). I was curious because I’ve been listening to Australian radio coverage of cylone Yasi, and the expression they’ve been using is “bunkering down,” a variation meaning to hunker down in a bunker.

One of the women who phoned into the radio station during the storm said she was calming herself by crocheting. When they asked her what she was making, she said she didn’t know, she was just crocheting. She said that by the time the cyclone was over, it would probably be her cyclone blanket!

So, bunker down there and stay safe and warm. I think the groundhog didn’t see his shadow because he had sense enough not to stick his nose out.

  14. texwisgirl says:

I was afraid of that when you posted your nice weather yesterday. Stay safe and warm! Hugs to all your critters!

  15. Sue, a Florida Farm Girl says:

Yes, Mammaleigh, it is nice to live here in the south — until July and August!!! At any rate, when I went to bed in the wee hours this morning, it was 62 degrees still. When I got up it was 38, so a huge drop in those 7 hours.

Let’s hope winter relinquishes its grip and lets us all breathe more easily. Y’all take care.

  16. Yankee Gal says:

Twenty Two inches of snow so far up here in central NH…let me say that again – TWENTY TWO INCHES. Hokey Smokes Bullwinkle! But here’s the GOOD news…Grandmothers bread is in the oven right now making the house smell like a little slice of heaven. All is well.

We had freezing rain overnight in South Central PA. Everything is covered in about 1/2″ of ice. I did get some great pictures. It’s warming up a little, the forecast is 34 degrees before the winds pick up. DD just called me and said the winds are howling there. She’s about 3 hours west of us. They’re predicting lots of power lines down if the ice doesn’t melt before the winds get here. Keeping my fingers crossed.

:snuggle: :snuggle: You poor wintering folks…it’s balmy here today. Sitting on a partly cloudy day with 71 degrees, southerly breezes…wish I could send some y’alls way!!
Biggest problems we have is there are no bugs for the girls to scratch at. Having to buy crickets for them—now they are getting really spoiled!!
Baked white choc/macadamia and dried cranberries cookies and some dark chocolate with walnuts….glass of milk and off we go!!
Stay warm and safe everyone! :eating:
