Beulah Petunia’s calf is SO BEAUTIFUL!!!! I’ve got more pictures, and some video, which I hope I can get posted later today.
In the meantime, the guessing game giveaway winner is Cindy Lou, with 6:06 a.m. on the 14th. The actual time we discovered the calf was 8:30 p.m. on the 13th. (Cindy Lou, email me at CITRgiveaways(at)aol.com with your full name and address for shipping!)
Meanwhile, I think we were wrong last night when we tried to sex the calf in the dark while it was still wet.
In daylight and dried off…. I think it’s a boy!
UPDATE: See the rest of the story (and final sexing results) here!

They do have an umbilical cord down there also you know. Did you check the back end and does it have ummmm can I say it on here…testicles?? Okay okay, I know you know how to tell, it’s just that that face is just too pretty to be a boy! LOL!

KentuckyFarmGirl says:
If it’s a girl it will have two holes in the back like BP. If it’s a boy just one. If there’s testicles between the back legs, he’s a boy, if not she’s a girl. The pic looks more like where the umbilical cord was than his boy thing but I can’t tell for sure in the pic. Go raise it’s tail and take a pic of the back end and I’ll tell you LOL!
On September 14, 2010 at 11:00 am
EightPondFarm says:
Suzanne and BP, congratulations!!! I agree, very pretty for a boy. But cattle are harder to tell as newborns since the umbilical is much larger.
You seem to have this sex determination problem, Suzanne. :devil2: Even if you cannot get close, just watch him/her until s/he pees. Works on all animals. But you might want to dip its navel just as with goats and sheep, too. So check it out.
On September 14, 2010 at 11:02 am
KentuckyFarmGirl says:
There’s also another way to be totally sure. If it pees out the back it’s a girl. If it pees from the belly it’s a boy.
On September 14, 2010 at 11:06 am
whaledancer says:
I love the way I always learn new things on this site. I didn’t know you needed to dip the navel of baby goats and sheep.
Boy or girl, BP’s newborn is beautiful. Eyelashes to die for. With that face, I hope he’s a she.
How’s Beulah Petunia doing?
On September 14, 2010 at 11:18 am
Gen says:
WOW! I can’t believe that HUGE calf was in BP, either. It looks so uncomfortable…she’s amazing to have accomplished the birth by herself. So fun to see the photos! Any thoughts on a name yet? Maybe Texaco or Chevron to go with BP? ; )
On September 14, 2010 at 11:20 am
KLabmom says:
Congrats! Not to be a naysayer, but it looked more like the belly button than a boy part. You better go lift the tail and check. Or follow it around until it goes pee, lol!!!

farmershae says:
So beautiful!!!! The eyeliner screams girl, tho. If it is a boy, he may be a little confused…. 😆

What a beautiful, big, baby. I’m going to say SHE (because of the optimism),is probably as big as your goats.
Hey 52-“Throw it up in the air and if it sticks to the ceiling, its a——no, wait—-that’s for chickens.” FUNNY,I didn’t know that worked for chickens too!
Congrats to all!

jan~n~tn says:
Suzanne,comment#25:kentuckyfarmgirl is the easiest answer. Go raise the tail…because how has time to wait for a calf to go pee?

That baby is too pretty to be a boy….look at those beautiful eyes and eyelashes!!!… but it sure looks like it has dangly things. Dang it…..you can still nip the back danglies in time and have a little pet! Which will get bigger.
Do we get to name him/maybe/her?
Congratulations on this baby!

Oh my gosh! Beautiful! What a precious face! So… either Darnit or Didit. (Just kidding!) I’m sure by the next time you post, we’ll have a definitive answer. Either way, BP did an amazing job! Three cheers for BP! :woof: :woof: :woof:
Okay. I’m a city girl. What is navel dipping? Never mind. I looked it up. Seems important. For anyone else who might not know, these sites explain what and why: https://www.milkproduction.com/Library/Articles/Calving_Ease_Navels_and_Newborns.htm

My kids were less than impressed with the first pictures you posted this morning – when the calf was still wet and it was still darkish. I have a feeling they are going to “Oooo” and “Ahhh” over these pics though. What a darling calf!!!
I’m curious – the title of your post said BBB winner was announced…but I only saw the announcement for the “birthdate” winner. Did I miss something?
On September 14, 2010 at 1:57 pm

Patricia Lynn, the guessing game over who could guess closest to the time of the birth IS the BBB winner–the prize is a BBB.

Hey Suzanne!
Congratulations! I guessed that it would be born on the day that my new nephew was due to arrive. My nephew surprised us all and came earlier than expected! A good 3 weeks early! He was born September 13th at 6:15 pm. Weighed 8 pounds and 12 ounces! A healthy handsome bouncing boy!
