Store-bought Cookies

Dec
19

Yesterday, toward the end of our day in the city, we stopped at Wal-Mart for groceries. Morgan was helping me get the things on my list and was putting things in the cart on the sly. When I was putting away the groceries at home, I found a package of those frosted sugar cookies Wal-Mart sells from their bakery that they decorate to match whatever the current season or holiday.

I said, “Morgan, let me show you the baked cookies on the counter and the refrigerator full of cookie dough ready to be baked.”

Morgan: “I forgot that you make cookies.”

SHE’S BEEN AWAY FROM HOME FOR ONE WEEK AND SHE FORGOT THAT I MAKE COOKIES.

O happy dagger!
This is thy sheath;
there rust, and let me die.

  16. trudy says:

Every dime spent at Walmart is a knife in the back of a U.S. worker. I’m just saying…

  17. farmershae says:

    Crazy kids!!!! πŸ˜†

  18. ladybird_1959 says:

I bought some of these cookies last week. I should have mailed them to you for Clover. I threw them in the garbage, they were really bad. They tasted like they were half baked.

I pray Ross makes it home safe and sound and you all have a very Merry Christmas!

  19. Mike says:

The stuff they make/sell in their bakery/deli is terrible. I’ve always wondered why they don’t put some effort into improving that problem.

  20. Miz Robyn says:

Oh god, this is awful, but I bought some of those cookies yesterday, too! (I hate to admit it, but I LOVE them. Clearly I have no taste.)

  21. IowaCowgirl says:

Please absolve me: I too have purchased these plasti-coated wonders from Walmart since my poor bereft daughter at college loves them. And I have been known to eat the frosting off the top in the midnight hour (when there-are-no-calories-from-sugar-time).

I’ll be thinking of you and your family, especially your oldest being home! Merry Christmas.

  22. marymac says:

Suzanne, you gotta get Wal-marts recipe!!! Then Morgan can make them!

  23. Linda Segerson says:

Shame on her…sneak out and feed them to the animals…they might eat them…but on the other hand they may be spoiled to your home-made cookies! :snoopy:

  24. ladychef says:

Hahaha!!! I think that girl has a sense of humor like mine. LOVE IT!!! :shimmy:

  25. Cousin Sheryl says:

That is one cookie that I will not buy. That gross icing on them is so sweet it makes my teeth hurt! She didn’t get any of those over here. (actually, my house was cookie-less but she had chips, soda, pizza and McDonalds – LOL)

  26. Leah says:

Morgan must like those cookies Mama lol now you can figure out how to make them!

  27. Marianne G says:

Hysterical! Every once in a while, you crave the packaged goodies!

  28. patrice says:

Ouch! Have a cookie to console you. The quote at the end speaks of a medieval literature class in college.

  29. Barbee' says:

I’m sure she has no idea how they got into the basket… they just jumped in all by themselves.

  30. Melissa says:

My mom loves those cookies. I think they are atrocious.

  31. Rhonda says:

Ah yes, teenagers and their grief. Love the quote and I’m borrowing it. The rate my son is going he may not get any presents…but I just made a chocolate sheet cake for him to take to the scout lock-in at church tonight.

  32. catslady says:

Everyone in my family loves those cookies but me – yuk lol. Other people would die for your cookies – just ask Clover lol.

  33. Whaledancer says:

How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is
    To have a thankless child!

Well, there’s nothing like the taste of those store-bought cookies to make her appreciate having a mother who bakes the real thing. You could punish her by making her eat them…but who could punish a kid who giggles like that?

  34. Kristine says:

To people complaining about the cookies…I don’t think WalMart bakes those there. I’d bet they are Lofthouse brand cookies. They do the same thing here…but those cookies are sold EVERYWHERE. Always decorated for the season or holiday. People all over the internet have tried to find a recipe to make them at home…seems none to be found. tHEY ARE A VERY CAKEY COOKIE AND people here go nuts over them. I’m sure they aren’t baked at WalMart. Do a search for Lofthouse cookies. You’ll see what I mean. πŸ™‚

  35. Elaine Harrison says:

    I don’t believe you Morgan! πŸ˜†

  36. shannon stoney says:

    haha! good one.

  37. Sharon Skelton says:

I don’t like those store bought frosted stale tasting cookies at all….but my daughter loves them!

  38. ticka1 says:

Sounds like my teenage daugther! Crazy but they eat both til they are gone! What we put up with!!!! I’ll eat some of your cookies Suzanne!

  39. Paulette says:

I make everything home-made, including cookies, but OMG I LOVE THOSE WALMART COOKIES!!! I totally understand Morgan πŸ™‚

  40. Senta Sandberg says:

My son Zach loves those cookies.

  41. angela says:

I think Ms. Morgan is a pretty smart cookie herself. Think she was just playing with her mamma. Think maybe she really did miss home?

  42. kd says:

You seem SO fun, Morgan! Would love to meet you some day. Those cookies are SOOOOO good and, yes, I bake all mine from scratch here at home. Sometimes, though, I just HAVE to indulge in those very cookies!

  43. Rose C. says:

This would be something my kids would do! Just love them!

  44. jlenhart says:

My 9-year-old daughter has been telling me lately that my bread (GRANDMOTHER BREAD NO LESS) isn’t good. While she’s eating multiple servings of it, of course. And then every fresh bread she encounters is deemed of better quality than MY bread – the samples at Sam’s Club, the rolls at Thanksgiving, restaurant bread. Hmmmpf! I’m afraid to think of what she’ll say when she’s a real teenager!

  45. Joy says:

How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is to have a thankless child! I think teenagers’ taste buds are numbed by sugar until they can’t taste anything good. Also they are attracted to the bright colors of artificial coloring. Hopefully they grow out of it.

  46. Judy says:

:chef: too funny…. of course, my kids always prefered the boxed mac and cheese with orange powder to real mac and cheese. They DID finally develop taste buds!

  47. Jessica says:

My son loves those cookies. They taste awful to me so it’s rare that we’ll buy them. Sometimes the bakery has a box of them open for samples, that’s when I don’t care if he eats one. πŸ˜‰ He knows I make WAY better cookies!

  48. Sheila says:

My son and hubby like those cookies from walmart and lowes , I can’t stand them (they always leave a weird taste in my mouth) , funny thing is my hubby really likes suzannes farm house sugar cookies as well , but my son won’t touch them (go figure LOL).
