….if I can get somebody else to do it? I’m bringing my bucket of black walnuts with me to the festival. Along with gloves. And safety glasses. And a hammer. People love to try dorky stuff at festivals, and at the very least, I’ll get some entertainment and maybe some tips. And maybe I can get my whole bucket hulled! But that might be too much to expect. Anyway! If you will be at the Black Walnut Festival in Spencer, West Virginia tomorrow, come say to me!
I’ll be the one with over 80 pint jars of apple and pear stuff.
I’m all packed up.
I’ll also be doing some volunteer work for the extension service, handing out some free WV Department of Agriculture gardening and agricultural info/pamphlets, and keeping a signup sheet for the extension service of people who want to be notified when the next master gardener class is starting up. I will be near the Heritage community building–SATURDAY ONLY–until I sell out, so come early!

I hope you have a wonderful time. So glad you are able to combine community service with your enterprising salewomanship! I’m sure you will be finished very early. Looking forward to the day I can have the time to do some of those fun things I want to do!

Sounds like a fun time! Good luck with your jam sales, and be sure and dress warm! You don’t want to get sick again. (I sound like a Mom, don’t I?)

If I lived closer, I’d stop by…
You could always have a drawing… for every walnut that gets “hulled” their name goes into a drawing for a jar of jam/butter. 🙂
I’d do it.

Hmmm. I would think if I went through the trouble of hulling, shelling, and picking a black walnut, I would EAT it. You might end up with an empty bucket, and a pile of shells and hulls LOL! Good luck with the selling and have fun, lady!

They’re just going to hull. Not the rest. The nuts need to be washed, dried, cured, before cracking.

I tried to come up to the festival, Hubby has never ending fence work that trumped me. I even tried to threaten him with an alternative of Bridge Day – which is always a madhouse, but no luck. If we were closer I would be there without him. I hope you have good sales, hulled walnuts, and a fun day.

I worked on Black Walnuts for several days this week without gloves–Yeah, this stain isn’t coming off anytime soon and I see another bucket on the ground ready for me to hull. That’s okay, I’m going to enjoy them in baked goods after they cure and are cracked.
Have a great day and let us know how many Hullers you get and stay away from strange hippie kinda men! LOL

Hey, trying the old Tom Sawyer paint the fence trick!
Now I know what that funny fruit is maybe there’s a black walnut nearby. Then I can share the fun sport of black walnut hulling–and washing and drying and then the funfun sport of cracking and picking black walnuts. If they weren’t so delicious folks would have let them stay there on the ground!
Enjoy the day before the strange weather from the west hits your area–storms, hail, flooding rain. Hope it gives out before it hits you guys.
