About two months ago, I had this crazy idea while pondering the issue of decor and the block wall in my downstairs project.
You can’t just pound any old nail in there to hang stuff up. Decorating and a block wall is a STUMBLING BLOCK. I know, there are ways to hang stuff up, but…..
I had a vision!!
What I would really love to do is have an artist come in and paint some scenes of my farm and my animals. Wouldn’t that be awesome?! I quickly became enamored with this idea. NOT a full-scale mural, just some creatively arranged/scattered art. Not bold primary colors. I don’t want this to look like a children’s playroom. More muted colors, in a primitive folk art style.
I wondered if there were any artists out there (in reasonable driving distance of West Virginia) who would trade a free farm stay with farm-fresh food and all the free one-on-one workshops (cheesemaking, breadbaking, soapmaking, candlemaking, preserving) they can stand…..for art?
And what do you know, an artist held her hand up! Kelly Walker is a full-time artist in Virginia. She teaches art and has participated in a number of solo and juried shows of her work. I’m beyond honored that she is willing to paint my humble block wall. She will be bringing an art student with her, and it will be an amazing weekend. Kelly is arriving at Stringtown Rising Farm this Saturday. Let the fun–and art–begin!
Stay tuned for lots of photos as it happens!! If you’re attending the Party on the Farm on September 4, you’ll get to see Kelly’s work in person.
Go see Kelly here.

Suzanne, if you don’t receive any answer to paint your basement from your “flock”, you may try some of the near by art schools, I am sure some of the students would love a free stay in the county, with where you are located, I would think there would be a lot of interest by students doing paintings of the beautiful countryside in your area, they could do the painting for you as well as gathering ideas for doing paintings for them selves in the future.
