I’ve been making progress in my project to revamp the small guest room upstairs in my house. There are only three bedrooms in this little old farmhouse, and this is my only guest room. As I posted recently, this was the “before” picture.
I had been using it as a junk/storage room, so that photo is actually not indicative of just how terrible the room looked to begin with. That was after I’d cleaned it out. It still left much to be desired as a comfortable guest room, especially in light of the lumpy old bed. (Just ask anyone who has stayed here. When I posted pics that I was remodeling the room, Laura, one of my retreat teachers, emailed me, “Be still my heart.” She has to sleep in this room for a week at a time when she comes to teach for retreats.)
The changes started with clearing out the old furniture completely and putting a fresh coat of paint on the walls.
I also got a lamp–there is no overhead lighting in that room, just one small wall light.
The lamp is called “birds and berries” and I ordered it from Amazon. (You can find it here.) I also replaced the red plastic tote serving as night table with this cute little chest.
It’s a narrow five-drawer chest with a distressed finish. Because I love home delivery, I also got it from Amazon. (Find it here.)
I had a twin bed delivered next.
Then the mattresses and I could finally make the bed!
I let the bird lamp set the theme when I decorated. The art work over the bed by the window is a linen canvas with a pretty “postage stamp” bird print. I got it here.
I hung a little fun inspirational sign from the curtain rod.
Up close:
I got the little sign here.
I hung a “welcome” sign by the door, just inside the room.
With birds, of course!
The little birdies welcome sign came from here. (I shop at home from Amazon a LOT.) A white chest of drawers will go on that wall near the welcome sign eventually.
There’s even a bird coaster on the little dresser top by the bed.
You guessed it, that also came from Amazon, here. The coasters kind of cross-match to the postage stamp art work, too.
I had a lot of fun with my accidental bird theme (which came from the initial lamp purchase, which was random, just because I thought it was pretty).
I’m almost finished with the room, other than the chest, which is on back order and will be delivered someday…. What do you think? I can’t wait for my first guest!

Very nice, you can name it, the Lady Bird suite! An old birdcage could be used for toiletries!

Like how the room turned out and then when you found your theme, you were able to tie in all the bird items. I like the color green and how the white furniture looks up against the color. The room is pretty, and a perfect place for all your future guests.

It’s a nice bird room! I like what sesamekaren said – a birdcage on the upcoming dresser with fancy toiletries or towels would be perfect.
Nicely done.

Well done, You! Now the last thing to do is to sleep in your guest room just to be sure everything is as comfy and cozy as it looks. I remember reading in an old copy of Emily Post that a gracious hostess sleeps herself in each of her guest rooms once a year just to be sure everything is still up to her standard.

Absolutely love it,Suzanne! I love it when you get a theme from some piece of art, rug or a lamp! It’s a very cute room. And it’s not too froufrou for a guy to stay in there. Very farmhouse cheery!

The sheets are perfect with their twiggy design. The white furniture makes the room look bigger. Very nice decor, Suzanne.
