Temperatures took a steep drop this week, and yesterday we woke to snow.
And a frozen latch. I had to climb over the gate.
Everybody seemed a little surprised by the abrupt change in weather. I had my new warm chore boots.
Helicopter ears.
Chicken tracks.
Woolly bottoms.
Heads in hay.
Heads begging for hay.
Horses silhouetted against the stark white world.
And Maia.
“Can I have a costume now? I’m cold.”
Ha.
And dogs to walk with me all the way.
Except for when they had to stop and remember what to do in this white stuff.
Casper: “Play with me.”
“Please!”
“That’s the way!”
Chloe: “Make it stop.”
“Oh, okay….”
“You know I love you, Casper.”
“But let’s go guard something now.”
“Oh never mind!”
The End.

Nice photos, it is still cold and snowy here as well. Suzanne, carry one of those little throw away lighters in your pocket, they will take care of those frozen locks.

Cold here, though no snow. Sassafras Farm looks picture perfect with the snow cover!
And the lighter Joell suggested is a must. Brings back memories of heating my car key to get into my old VW bug. 🙂

Carry a book of matches, or some in a ziploc bag for recalcitrant latches.

Hi Suzanne! I’m having fun on my own little farm over here in Maryland and really enjoy reading your blog. I passed on your flaky biscuit recipe in my own blog post the other day. They were gooood!

When you use that lighter or match, don’t touch the latch and burn yourself. Love the photos. You have such a beautiful farm.

Is little Maia’s harness on wrong? Something doesn’t look right there.
I could just cuddle her all day long.

Suzanne, that first picture is awesome! Would you consider putting it in your gallery to purchase? The others are so cute. We got a smidgeon of snow last night here in eastern NC! Stay warm. :happyflower:

My fix for frozen latches: take off your glove (I know, it’s cold!) and wrap your hand around the latch for about 30 seconds. My many years of critters & NY winters have taught me more than I care to know about cold weather & farming 8)

I get down close to those latches and breath heavy through my mouth on them…you know, huff some hot air on them and they open right up! I keep thinking I really need to change those latches in the winter though.

What are your winters like in West Virginia? Does the snow stick around for long?

Suzanne, you really need to write a few children’s books about life on the farm with the dogs, sheep, goats, chickens and other assorted farm creatures. That’s what I think every time you have a post like this one. I think perfect KIDS book!!!
