In the Interest of Decluttering

Jul
24

Yesterday, while flea-bombing the house (for the second time in a week–the first time didn’t work!), I spent the time banished from the house out on the porch going through boxes of books. I’m still–slowly–working on getting unpacked around here.

Coco had to be banned from the porch for fear she’d decide to chew on the books.

Coco isn’t used to being banned from the porch. She didn’t like it.

She was very sad about it.

And confused about why her giant puppy shoulders couldn’t fit through the porch gate.

And hurt that Dookie-the-farm-shih-tsu got to be on the porch and she didn’t.

Dookie: “Sometimes it’s good to be little.”

I love books and have collected far too many over the years. I’m a compulsive book buyer. I’m trying to be ruthless about cutting down clutter. Part of my goal in living a simpler life is to not surround myself with a lot of stuff. I rarely reread a book–there are too many new books in the world to reread ones I’ve already read–so I’m making myself give away most of my books to new homes and new readers by donating them to the library in Spencer. But books I’ve read are just one part of the problem. I also have boxes and boxes of extra copies of books I’ve written.

I’ve always used these copies of my books in giveaways, extras for booksignings, charity donations, freebies to friends or relatives, etc, but after twenty-six published books, the numbers of extras are getting out of hand and stacking up faster than I can use them at my usual pace. I’m not sure the library would be thrilled to have hundreds of copies of the same books by the same author, so I’m going to try giving them away in greater numbers–starting today. If you’re one of the recipients of the 20 books I’m giving away today, you’ll need to send me a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Postage for a paperback book is about $1.50, or at least that’s what I remember from the last time I mailed one. When I take the packages to the post office, I’ll make up any difference if there is some. The envelope must be large enough to fit a paperback book. (If you’re not sure, try putting a paperback book in the envelope you intend to send to make sure it fits.)

For this round–I’ll be giving out 20 books, 5 copies each (and I’ll give a “heat” rating) of: Third Sight (a PAX League book, paranormal romance, very hot), The Bride, the Trucker and the Great Escape (light romantic comedy, sweet, not overtly sexy), Cole Dempsey’s Back in Town (Louisiana murder mystery, hot), and Her Secret Stranger (romantic comedy, a little hot).

The book is free, but remember, I’ll need a self-addressed, stamped envelope. I’ll autograph the books. (I hate autographing books–it just makes me feel very silly–but people always seem to want me to, so I will.)

U.S. addresses only, please. (Sorry about that!)

POST HERE, in the comments, where people can keep track of when a book has hit 5 requests so they’ll know to pick another one, and say which book you want. The first 5 people who request each of the books get it, so if you count 5 people who already said one book, then ask for one of the others. I’ll be emailing the first 5 for each book to give you the post office box address where you can send your envelopes.

Of course, I’m not sure there are 20 people who want a copy of one of my books and are willing to pay $1.50 for the postage and send the envelope, so this is a test-run to see if I should do this again or not! If it looks like there’s enough interest, then I’ll do this again, repeatedly, until I get rid of all these books that are trying to swallow my house, so if you miss this one, catch the next one!

P.S. If you did miss this one (or even if you didn’t and you want another book), please let me know in the comments. I’ll plan the next giveaway based on the interest. I have hundreds of copies of my books. If there’s enough interest, the next giveaway will be a biggie. I’ve got to do something about all these boxes!

UPDATE: All the books are taken for this round, but please leave a comment letting me know if you are interested. I’ll use the info to plan the next, even bigger, giveaway. Thanks!

  1. Kathleen in MI says:

I have not yet read any of your books, but I intend to after having discovered your blog.

I would love to have a copy of “Third Sight”.

  2. Meghan Rosenstengel says:

Early bird gets the first comment!

I hate fleas! I have had very good luck using diatomaceous earth to keep our home flea free. I use it to prevent/treat internal and external parasites on all of my animals and buy it 50 pounds at a time.

  3. Egghead says:

I think Third Sight sounds very interesting. So hard to choose! OK I would like Third Sight. Good luck on the ridding of fleas. They can be buggers!

  4. Sarah Cooper says:

I’d like Her Secret Stranger, and thank you. πŸ™‚

  5. Sue says:

    Her Secret Stranger please!

  6. Laura Lingo says:

Oh, how cool! I would like….Coco…Clover and her babies….even Spartacus, but I’ll settle for Third Site! Love your website and I keep hoping you’ll sneak in a picture of 52! Thank you

  7. Lora says:

I would love a copy of “Third Sight”!
I will buy the rest in the series…..where do you make the most money?

  8. Suzanne McMinn says:

Lora, I don’t understand the words “most” and “money” in the same sentence. πŸ˜†

Do you mean which type of books sell the best for me? Probably the paranormal romantic suspenses, but none of them make a whole heck of a lot.

  9. Kool Aid says:

I’ll give Third Sight a try – if it’s already gone, then The Secret Stranger. I enjoy reading your blog, so I’m sure I’ll enjoy the book. Thanks!!

  10. Gail says:

I enjoy your writing style and humor on your blog and have been wanting to check out your books! Will you be autographing these??? I’d like to read Her Secret Stranger.

  11. Cheryl S. says:

I’d love a copy of Her Secret Stranger, please — I have the others. I love the second picture of Coco. Poor thing!

  12. happyathome says:

  13. Heidi says:

Her Secret Stranger!!! OH I am So excited about this!!!

  14. Blessed says:

I love books… I have a hard time giving any away though πŸ™‚

I’ll try The Bride, The Trucker….

Oh and more giveaways are always good!

  15. jan ellis says:

Cole Dempsey’s Back In Town’. How about a copy? My neighbor and I love a good book! What a great idea. I do the same with the books that we have read. Some are worth reading again but it is more fun to share. I am a firm believer that if you teach a child to read that you give them the world. Thanks for sharing.

  16. annie says:

OOOhh “Third Sight” or may “Cole Dempsey…” I haven’t read your books, but am faithful to the blog site…to the point of being late to work…oops!

  17. Snapper says:

    Poor Coco!

CD’s Back In Town for me, please & thank you!

  18. Kathryn says:

Crumbs! We are going away for a couple weeks, so I can’t play this time. Rats. Next time.

Dookie is one cute pooch! That expression is priceless. You know, the picture of Coco with her head through the gate really shows how much she is changing from a pup to a grown-up. I am not sure I like that at all, at all!

  19. jan ellis says:

I don’t seem to be able to find the address? Help. please.

  20. Suzanne McMinn says:

I’ll email everybody with the address, Jan! (I didn’t want to post it online.)

  21. Kelly says:

Would love to read Third Sight! Thanks!

  22. Sarita says:

I’d love to read Cole Dempsey. Thanks!

  23. Suzanne McMinn says:

Third Sight–Kathleen in MI, Egghead, Lora, KoolAid, Kelly. That’s five!

  24. Suzanne McMinn says:

Her Secret Stranger–Sarah, Gail, Cheryl S, Heidi, Sue. That’s five!

  25. brenda Taylor says:

I would love to read any of your books, but Secret Stranger would be good. Thanks Brenda

  26. Shimmy Mom says:

I would love to read The Bride the Tucker and the Great Escape! What a fun give-away!
    Thank you very much!
Poor Coco, it can be such a hard life!
    *hugs*

  27. pamela says:

I’d love a copy of Cole Dempsey. Sounds like a good read.
    BTW…I adore Coco.

  28. Suzanne McMinn says:

Oops, I missed Laura Lingo for Third Sight. I’ll do six!

Cole Dempsey’s Back in Town–Annie, Jan, Snapper, Sarita. That’s four. One more anyone?

Brenda, I’ll do six on Her Secret Stranger, too, since you commented before I counted up!

The Bride, the Trucker and the Great Escape–Blessed and Shimmy Mom–three more on this one…anyone?

    happyathome–which one do you want??

  29. Blaze says:

This is so totally awesome and a great way to get rid of clutter!
    SMRT!

I to have collected what we call a metric assload of books, but I do reread some of my favorites Lord of the Rings once a year and some others when time allows.
The one I was interested in is already spoken for so I shall wait until another round but this is very cool and a great idea
    *thumbs up*

  30. Suzanne McMinn says:

Pamela–okay, that’s five on Cole Dempsey.

  31. Bonny says:

Wow, Thank you. I bet this is the best way to get rid of the extra books quick. I think that the “Cole Dempsey’s Back in Town” sounds interesting. Thanks.
    ~Bonny

  32. Suzanne McMinn says:

Blaze–I love the Lord of Rings books! In fact, when I went through the boxes, I kept those. I can’t let them go. I love them too much!!!

happyathome–all that’s left is The Bride, the Trucker, and the Great Escape, so I’m going to “assign” you one of those copies.

Two more copies of The Bride, the Trucker and the Great Escape are available!

  33. Bonny says:

Sorry, it looks like we were posting at the same time, maybe next time.

  34. Suzanne McMinn says:

Bonny, I’ll do six on Cole Dempsey’s Back in Town since we were posting at the same time! πŸ™‚

  35. Bonny says:

    Oh, thank you. :snoopy:

  36. Jo Lynn says:

Dang it! I missed out on Her Secret Stranger! I could have used something since the cool down in WV last night. Yup I am a West Virginia gal myself.

  37. Suzanne McMinn says:

Jo Lynn–if there’s enough interest, I’ll do this again and give away even more books. I need to finish unpacking my boxes so I can see how many copies I actually have of each title. (Which is the reason it’s limited this time–I haven’t gone through all my boxes yet and there are some titles I have more copies of than others, so I need to check.)

  38. Lisa L says:

I’m in Canada so I’m out of luck. But I think this is a great idea!!! Enjoy everyone! I’ll still take Coco though! LOL!

  39. Robin G. says:

Damn. I’d love some copies, but apparently I wasn’t up early enough πŸ˜‰

I simply can’t get on board with getting rid of books, though. Clean down everything else, but books are tiny and easy to store. Aside from when I wind up with multiple copies, I don’t think I’ve ever thrown or given away a book.

  40. Suzanne McMinn says:

There are two copies left of The Bride, the Trucker and the Great Escape. Anyone? (I notice the books I said were “hot” went first, LOL.)

  41. Nancy says:

I love to read and would love a copy of The Bride, the Trucker and the Great Escape. Thank you so much for this.

  42. liz in NY says:

Too bad I slept late today, only a few more weeks and it will be back up at 5. Love reading all about your life!! Maybe next time for the book giveaway. Liz S.

  43. Kim says:

I would love a copy of The Bride, The Trucker and the Great Escape! It sounds fascinating! Hard to de-clutter isn’t it?

  44. Suzanne McMinn says:

Okay, Nancy and Kim, that’s five.

If you’re reading this now and would be interested in seeing me do another giveaway (with even more books!) please leave a comment letting me know. I’ll plan the next giveaway based on your comments!

  45. Shari C says:

Sorry I missed out on the giveaway. Would love to have you do another one.

  46. Nancy says:

 Thank You!! Another give away would be great. I am an avid reader, both of books and two blogs, one of which is yours of course.

  47. Kim says:

Thank you soooo much! Of course you should do more! Benefits for you are de-cluttering and building a bigger fan base. Benefit for me – signed book by one of my favorite bloggers! Have a great day Suzanne!

  48. Kathleen in MI says:

Another giveaway sounds like a great idea. It looks like everyone is very excited about it. I have a job that gives me quite a bit of time to read so I am always interested in a new book. Anything I have read goes to my sister, my in-laws or the hospital where I work.

  49. Cheryl McMinn says:

Sorry that you did this on my morning off and I slept in and missed it. I would have loved any copy of your book just for a conversation piece, being you publish under my last name. Maybe next time. Cheryl

  50. heidi says:

I walked the dog early and missed the giveaway! I’d love to read your books- another giveaway would be much appreciated!

  51. Tina L says:

I would love to be included in a future givaway. I’ll be checking your website.

    Thanks,

  52. Suzanne McMinn says:

Yes, I was thinking next time that I would do several giveaways during a day so that those who read blogs later in the day would have a chance, too!

  53. Employee No. 3699 says:

Too late. I would have loved a copy of one of your books.

  54. Claudia W says:

I can’t believe how early you people get up!!!!! LOL
I would be interested in reading your books, and a contest to win one would just be fun! I apparently sleep in too much! (It’s 6:45 here!)

  55. wkf says:

wow! you did well! my mom used to donate her old books to the prison’s. :flying:

  56. sunnid755 says:

Great idea, and how nice of you! Please keep me in mind for a book giveaway. Any of them will do, I’m a voracious reader and I love your blog, so it all looks good. Poor CoCo, good luck with the fleas. We use Revolution on our dogs and even tho it’s expensive, it works, no more fleas in years now.

  57. Susan Flemming says:

I’d love to take part in a future book give away. Your blog is my first stop each day when I log on to the internet.

  58. Jessica says:

I would love a book!!! I started reading your column a few months back and then later that month i discovered an excerpt from your new book in Cosmo! I loved it! Anyway I want a new book! I read your last one (the cosmo one) and loved it but i would love to read some of your other stuff!

  59. Norma says:

I would love one of your books. I have tried to purchase them at wall mart and some book stores and have been coming up empty. Love your blog Suzanne

  60. Amy says:

Rats, I didn’t read your blog early enough this morning! Please do another give-away!

  61. Donna says:

    LOVE THAT PUP!!! How adorable!

I love to read and am inundated myself! We have closets full, because we have not gotten new bookselves yet!

  62. Fannie M Wiggins says:

For the first time in days, I got to read your blog earlier in the day. I have all the later books except The Bride. Darn. I would love to have some of your earlier books especially the Historicals that came out in early 2000’s. I have been reading your books since about 1999 and some of the first ones I failed to keep as I was in the process of moving and books got given away. Coco is getting so big. Can’t help on the flea problem as I don’t have pets. Good luck with that. Have a great day and  to all. P.S. Please do another give-away. Thanks.

  63. Michelle says:

I would love to read your books! If I send a BIG envelope with enough postage could you send all of them?

  64. Debbie in Memphis says:

What a day to sleep in and check your blog late πŸ˜₯ That’s ok, put me on the list of people who’ll be checking early from now on to be part of the next giveaway. Now you’re not just sharing your life, but you’re sharing your books too. WOW!

Decluttering is the hardest thing in the world for me to do. I’m a pack rat by nature and nurture. We all seem to have that you never know when you might need something mentality, sadly I’m lacking the attics and tons o’ storage space the rest of my family have.

I don’t think I could get rid of too many of my books tho. We love to reread our favorites.

Thanks so much for sharing with us!! :woof:

  65. Gloria Jean says:

    Hi!
This is a BRILLIANT idea for decluttering! I’ll probably never get up early enough to make the cut but it’s fun to think about.

  66. Shirley says:

I am very much interested in the book give-away. I’m not much on Hot or x rated books, but I love light romantic comedy.

The Bride, The Trucker and the Great Escape sounds like my level of reading.

Also I like mysteries. I read James Patterson’s books and like them very much, both the police stories and the love stories.

I enjoy your blog and have sent several people to check out all your animals(expecially the baby goats) and Coco is absolutely precious.

  67. Amanda says:

I would be very interested in a future book give a way!

I haven’t read any of your books yet, but they are on my list for my next library trip!!!

  68. Doris says:

I need some new reading material. I would love to have anything you don’t want to keep. Especially mysteries. I will try to get up and check in earlier next time . A book signed by my favorite blogger would be great !

  69. MsJamie says:

I am interested in the giveway! I have not read any of your books yet but am looking forward to doing so. Your blog writing is so wonderful, I know I will enjoy them.

  70. Christine says:

I’d love to have a copy of your books!

  71. Treasia says:

Missed out again since I slept in this morning. Maybe next time I can do this.

  72. TeresaH says:

Darn missed it! Maybe next time.

Poor Coco, that’s ok, one of these days she’ll be big enough to just hop over that little gate!

  73. Traci in GA says:

People just don’t understand about books!! When we moved back in March I gave away bags FULL of books to the local libraries. I just hate to part with a book I love. And there are some books I refuse to part with, that’s why 4 BIG boxes of books had to move with us. I just didn’t mark the boxes “Books” because husbands and moving men just don’t understand!!
Missed this giveaway but will watch for the next one.

  74. Katharina says:

Sci-Fi is big at our house. Paranormal romance? COOL! Looking at the comments, I would say another give away with your PAX league and Third Sight would be beneficial to your clearning out the house.

If the bombs don’t do the trick with the fleas just call in an exterminator. I hate toxic sprays, but I hate flea bites even more.

  75. G-Mama says:

I had to go to the dentist this morning and didn’t get to my computer until now. I would love to have any of your books. I will look forward to another chance. Thank you for your generosity.

  76. Kathy says:

Please count me as being interested!
I love your blog (and Coco)

  77. margie says:

dang it, missed your book suprise this morning! was at the dr. getting my infusion. count me in as interested in a future giveaway. i’d love to read one of your books.

    margiesbooboo

  78. jeanne.macbean says:

I guess the early bird gets the worm. I, too, would be interested in reading any one of your books. Maybe you could have a “surprise me” event. I’ll just send a prepaid envelope?
oh, and please give that puppy a kiss on his cute forehead.

  79. Susan says:

I would be very interested in a future book give a way and for Coco’s sake I would like the cover chewed! :shimmy:

  80. IowaCowgirl says:

Our local library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa was devastated by the floods and lost their entire adult collection. They aren’t accepting book donations yet; here is an excerpt from their website’s Q&A:
Q: When will I be able to donate books or volunteer?
A: As soon as we secure space, storage, and equipment, we will be in a position to deploy volunteers and accept materials. We will let the public know when that time comes. If you want to be placed on our volunteer list, please provide us with your contact information including name, address, phone, and email to Marie DeVries, 319-286-5982.

  81. Barbara W says:

We had the WORST flea problem a few years ago. I have 3 cats and a dog… and I thought I was about to go absolutely insane. We bombed the house three separate times, and it was as if it only made them come back stronger. One night while standing teary-eyed in front of the pesticide display at Lowe’s, my daughter went to ask a store employee for some advice. It turned out to be the best advice I’ve ever had in my entire life.

    Salt Water.

After spending hundreds of dollars on chemicals, I bought a spray bottle for $2.50, a box of salt for 30 cents, and my own tap water and found the best solution and the results were FAST. I dissolved a little less than 1 cup of salt in warm water in the sprayer. I sprayed the furniture, the floors, the pets… and let the salt water go to work drying up the eggs that hadn’t hatched. I vacuumed twice a day for two days after letting the salt water solution sit for a few hours… and they were GONE. I do have hardwood floors, so I had to treat them with oil so that they wouldn’t be ruined from the salt water… but it was totally worth it. If we ever even see a hint of a flea these days… I spray the pets and the area rugs… and then they’re gone.

    GOOD LUCK!!

  82. Melissa McClone says:

Suzanne – great idea for getting rid of books. I have so many foreign copies, too, it’s a bit overwhelming. All those boxes really take up space.

Are you going to RWA SF? Would love to see you!

    Melissa

  83. Bonny says:

I think maybe that Yahoo may have put your email with the address in the spam folder and I never check it, just delete, cause I didn’t get the address in the email yet. If you did not email yet, sorry. I just did not want you to think I did not respond.

  84. Suzanne McMinn says:

Bonny, no, I’m sorry, I’m just the slowest creature on Earth! I’ll get organized and email everyone tomorrow morning! πŸ™‚

  85. Nikki C. says:

    Dang, I missed it.

I just read through your whole blog!
…that sounded bad. I’m not a stalker, I swear. I’m just obsessed with someday having a farm similar to yours…I wanted to see how you did it!

I’ve been trying to get one of your books, I even ordered one off of Amazon (but it hasn’t come yet) so this looks like a great opportunity to find one!

  86. Kelli B says:

Shucks! Looks like I missed the boat too this time. I will wait patiently for your next huge giveaway!

  87. Cama says:

I’m in on the next give away! :shimmy:

  88. Courtney KS says:

Do it again! Do it again!! Please??? πŸ™‚

  89. Terry says:

Having one of your books would be very nice, and especially an autographed copy!

  90. SuzieQ says:

Probably the main reason I have lived in the same house since 1959 is that it would take forever and a day to contemplate packing up all my books. My husband of 39 years (deceased 12 yrs ago) used to tell me that he hoped that he went before I did because he wouldn’t know where to start with all my books. I’m compulsive about reading and the thousands I have line the walls. The only rooms without floor to ceiling bookcases, built by myself, are the kitchen and bath. Just no room there..darn that stove and fridge..If I only had money for food or a book it would be the book every time, unless the food was for my dogs.

  91. Karen says:

:hissyfit: Dog gone it! Missed the first round because I was out of pocket and not prompt about checking my favorite blogs, but of course I’m interested in it – so please do it again!!!

  92. Kelly - Dunbar, WV says:

I missed this round, but if you decide to do another go around, I would love a copy of Third Sight!

Thanks so much for doing this for your readers! πŸ™‚

    :hellokitty:

  93. Rhonda says:

Here is a downside of being Canadian…I miss out on your books. Too bad…The Bride, The Trucker and The Great Escape sounded interesting. Oh, well, at least I get to enjoy your blog! Please keep it up. I’m enjoying living the farm life vicariously!

  94. Jodie says:

Darn, I missed it. I’m bummed. That’s what happens when you go on vacation and forget to read the important blogs on your list. Darn! I’m interested in winning a future book.

  95. Darlene says:

I missed this giveaway, darn it! I’ll watch for your next giveaway, I know there’s lots more out there who love books and want another giveaway!!

  96. Birdi says:

Goodness…I missed the books. I would love to have a book. You can help me clutter my book corner. Put me down as interested for the future….Thank you!

  97. Patty says:

Hello! I just came across this site and I can’t stop reading! I love it, and the photos are fantastic! If you happen to still be giving away books, please keep this noob in mind! I’d love any of them!

  98. Leah says:

Dear Suzanne, I’m a new follower of your great blog. I love to read and would be thriled to have some of your autographed books to read and cherish. Thanks

  99. Julia says:

    Hi Suzanne,

I’m a regular reader now, and every day I follow a link at the bottom of the daily post, and then poke around for a few minutes reading a few of the older posts. It’s fun and eventually I’ll probably get to all of your archives one by one.

I hope you have been able to solve your flea problem. I remember 10 years ago we had them so bad they were riding with me in the car! I haven’t tried the salt water trick that another commenter suggested, but I will if they come back in the house.

What I finally did that worked was spray nematodes in the yard. The nematodes are microscopic creatures that eat flea larva. It took about 30 days during which we had to continue to use poison on the animals and in the house, but finally the fleas were all gone. And they haven’t been back! Of course in Houston we have very mild winters and so the nematodes may still be happily living in the yard and munching on any larva that come their way.

All my dogs stay in the back yard, so that was easy enough to spray. You might have a bigger problem with all that area where you dogs range. Still, if the problem resurfaces, it might be one way to reduce the amopunt of sprays, bombs, and powder you need

I enjoy you blog very much and appreciate your telling us about everything–good and bad.

I know you and your family must still miss Honey. Do Clover and Nutmeg seem to miss him as well?

    Take care.

    Julia
