The Comment I Love to Hate

Mar
22

I can’t get over this comment. I think I love it. It’s so mean, when I first saw it, it gave me a sick feeling. Then I read it over a few more times and I started falling in love with it because of its peculiar illogic and unintentional humor. I couldn’t bring myself to delete it out of my admin panel even though I never let it go through on the blog. I moderate comments to some degree in order to keep nutballs from interfering with my happy place. I like my blog to be a happy place. I don’t, intentionally, post anything to offend anyone. I like to celebrate what is beautiful. And yet, sometimes, some people leave nasty comments. I usually just hit the Delete button. But with this one, I couldn’t hit Delete. I didn’t let the comment go through to the blog, but I saved it. I think it’s my favorite mean comment ever!!!!

And now you know–if you post a “really good” mean comment, some day, I might post it and along with it your IP address and email address. Maybe I’ll create a Hall of Honor!

Here it is (and this comment is from December, right after I launched my new blog design, so the “ugly” he’s referring to is my current blog design):

Brad Pitt | [email protected] | whogivesashit.com | IP: 67.142.130.27

it’s ugly really really ugly. You should probably just go ahead and shoot yourself because it is that ugly. Oh and by the way you are stupid. You cannot be a farmer because you are that stupid. You cannot can food because you forget how to can food properly so that you don’t get food poisoning. But you know forget that I said that. Stupid people deserve food poisoning.

God Bless.

Dec 8, 4:16 PM

OHMYGOD! First of all, it’s from BRAD PITT!!! Wow, Angelina must have been really mean that day cuz he was in a bad mood!

Now let’s analyze what is really so fun and illogical about this comment. They posted their email address as from “stupidperson” I figure this isn’t a real email address, but if any of you want to email BRAD PITT (!!!) there it is, go for it. By using this as their email address, they basically call themselves stupid, then go on in the comment to tell me how stupid I am. I’m stupid, too stupid to be a farmer, I should shoot myself, and if I don’t do that, hopefully I’ll die of food poisoning.

But the best part is when they sign off with God Bless. Maybe, maybe, the whole comment wouldn’t fascinate me so much if it didn’t end with God Bless. It’s the coup de gras, the cherry on top, the hilarity of the entire piece.

And it’s from BRAD PITT!! Don’t forget that part.

Then I think, what is so weird about me that I love to hate this comment and can’t quite let it go?

What amazes me is that someone (especially someone as busy as BRAD PITT!!) took the time to comment so hatefully. And, yeah, the God Bless part is the kicker.

But, seriously? Brad Pitt!! needs to get a life, because the poor guy is headed for an ulcer or heart attack. Or, hey, food poisoning. :hungry:

FWIW, I love the new blog and made grandmother bread a couple of weeks ago. Yum. I even posted the link on my blog, and another friend swiped it and made the bread.

    No food poisoning here. Yet.

    Happy Easter!

Suzanne the stupid one is the so called Brad Pitt..I sense alot of unhappiness coming from that person who posted as Brad..and you know what I feel sorry for him..I love your blog and look forward to it everyday..Keep up the great posts..Connie

  4. Cyndi Lewis says:

Well, I must say you have a better attitude about this then I would. I feel sad that someone would feel it necessary to disrupt your happy place with such foolishness. I happen to like your blog very much and it seems from others comments that they do too, so to “Brad Pitt” I say… :rambo: :rambo: :rambo: :rambo: Oh, and “Mr. Pitt”- God Bless.

  5. lintys says:

Oh my goodness. Brad Pitt needs to get a life. I feel sorry for him too. People who are comfortable in their own skin don’t do sh*t like that.

You’re such a sweetheart, maybe you’re feeling sorry for Mr. “Pitt” (interesting choice of name. . .) in his self-misery and that’s why you can’t let his comment go.

  6. Lauri V says:

    Hi Suzanne,
This is my first time commenting but I read your blog everyday and love it and YOU. You make me SMILE and isn’t that what life is all about?! I love animals and nature and would love to live on a farm. Because that is not possible right now I enjoy hearing about your experiences. Thanks for sharing!

Brad’s comments made me laugh and then they made me sad. Especially because he included God in the mix. Our God is loving and I’m sure it broke his heart to see those words. I’m going to pray for Brad today. He needs it.

Stay in your happy place Suzanne and thanks for brightening my days! Your family is beautiful!
    Lauri

    P.S. What’s the update on 52? Dish girl dish….

  7. Shirley says:

I’ve read a comment or two on other sites that I thought were mean also. I think there is an unwritten law about these blogs. Talk to others the way you want to be talked to.

I’ve seen things on the news about people talking trash about others. Unless a person gets on some sort of soap box that invites other’s views, you should never comment like this person did. If you can’t type something good, don’t type anything at all, and stay away from the blog.

If you ask my opinion, I may give it, but never in an ugly manner.

Personally, I like the way your blog looks.

  8. shgrsweet says:

Man! I cant believe how mean and evil some people can be! I love your new design and i think you are going to make an excellant farmer 😉 :chicken:

  9. heidi says:

I guess I don’t really get what blogs are about. I thought they were like journaling in public-setting down random thoughts and observations- then I saw they were an invitation into someones life and family- and in your case, small town. But it bothers me sometimes that they seem to become a flattery club. I like to read some negative remarks and some people really don’t know how to couch disagreement on any other terms than “mean”. So- thanks for sharing Mr.Pitt’s comment and keeping it real.

  10. Jyl says:

Well, I am just at a loss for words on this…and that doesn’t happen very often. I wonder if Brad Pitt thinks he could actually have a garden (without the help of anyone being paid) and if he would actually even know how to put something in a jar, much less actually can it properly. What irony.

  11. Remudamom says:

Oh dear, what to say except……..God bless.

  12. Claudia W says:

What a stupid head! How could you be stupid and gotten this far in your life and to have done all that you have done?
    Brad Pitt!!! is just jealous.
I am in awe of all that you have accomplished!

  13. Hillbilly2 says:

Is still your happy place! Justs someone thinking they’re funny. Not funny! Just shows their immaturity! Who needs them when we have “Chickens In The Road”! :chicken: Your happy place is happy and beautiful, keep it up :typing: and don’t let the idiot get you down!

  14. Melissa says:

What a wonderfully weird and enlightened way to look at that comment. I have never been able to understand people being mean just for the sake of it and in a lame attempt at being funny. Since when is mean funny or a sign of higher intelligence?
I don’t get many comments on my blog and I haven’t had a mean one yet. I’m either well protected or so far off the radar I’m not worth the effort and I even post the occasional controversial writing.
Oh well! I hope you and the kids have a great easter. We’re supposed to get more snow or rain or something today. It’s that time of year when nature gets confused, and so do we! :weather:

  15. Jill S. says:

I can’t believe the comments that we get sometimes on our blogs. Always keeps it interesting, doesn’t it?

  16. Melissa says:

p.s. today’s photo is hilarious! We used to have two cats I just know they had a contest to see who could walk the farthest w/o their feet touching the ground!

  17. Courtney KS says:

That stinks! I’ve been sitting here debating what in the world to comment. Naturally, as a pretty faithful reader I want to come to your defense and flame the boots of “him”! I’m perplexed by the behavior of people like the faux Mr. Pitt whom I suspect is actually the Devil in disguise as the character he once played. Which is really a whole ‘nother set of issues for that “person” to deal with. Hello.

I think you’re a fabulous inspiration! As do the majority of the group here. Like you, like the background, like the tips! I’m so glad you know better than to take those mean comments to heart and do not give them the attention they crave. It’s a major buzzkill to see people go bananas on comment forums.

This is a happy place for me – Thank you for that!

    Happy Easter!
    Courtney in KS, really

  18. Susie says:

That people find the time to write these nasty posts amazes me… Although there seems to be a prevalence of them! I found your site through http://www.dooce.com a few months ago and you are now one of my favourites. Dooce also posted about hate mail in her most recent post, a lot of hers go so far as to insult her 4 year old daughter. It is truly a great way to deal with the nasty people, by laughing at them… Well done.

  19. Lyndi Lamont says:

    Suzanne,

This kind of comment says a lot more about the person leaving the comment than the subject of his rant. Some people need to get a life (and mind their own business). It’s good for a laugh, though.

    Lyndi

  20. Melanie says:

“Brad Pitt” is weak and stupid.

We like you, LOVE your blog, and personally, I admire everything you’ve done. Keep up the great work.

  21. Happy One says:

This is also my first time for commenting but felt a need after reading today’s blog. I just wanted to let “Brad” know that I’ve added him to my prayer list as it’s obvious he needs help.

I’m also a Roane County farm “girl” (returning to my roots after living out of state 20+ years) and have thoroughly enjoyed being back. I recently discovered your blog while reading the article in the County newspaper and have thoroughly enjoyed reading about you, your family, farm, home, recipes, 52, etc., etc., etc. ever since. Happy Easter to you and your family!

  22. Patricia Herman says:

I love your blog. I understand what you mean you love to hate a post like that… Can you imagine how what kind of person that is posting something mean like that….stupid and jealous perhaps?

Anyway I love your new house and look forward to your blogs on your garden and etc!!!

Happy Easter to your family and you.

    Patricia

  23. Paula Bogdan says:

Oh, goodness, but this person doesn’t like themself much, do they? And, obviously, they’re a firm believer in “Misery loves company.” But, you’ve destroyed that hope…of spreading misery, I mean!
I don’t think I’ve ever commented here before, but I absolutely love this blog. You bring a smile to my day, and I’ve loved following the progress of your new home!

  24. Kim A. says:

Oh, heck, that’s not even a *good* mean comment! If you are going to write something nasty, at least write with sharp, cutting, dry wit and intelligence. Now *that* would be worth a laugh.

    But this?

Pfftt. It’s nothing worthy of any regard at all!

    -Kim

  25. Gloria Jean says:

Oh my! I agree that this is compellingly weird and almost poetic. Reading it over a few times I realized that it has an almost Tourette’s quality: uncontrollable vile and irrational spewing, followed by a deep breath (the space between text and closure), and then peace (God bless).
Having self-identified him/herself as a “Stupid Person” in the email address is also like a pre-emptive apology for what comes after (because, after all, it comes from “stupidperson”).
Thanks for your blog. I start every day checking on your adventures. I’ve always wanted chickens and love the IDEA of a farm but am way too lazy to do it myself.

  26. Annette says:

I love your website, and if “Brad” does not like it, he or she has obviously never lived on a little country road with Chickens in the road! I have actually been on my way to work and have had to stop for cows and sheep! What “Brad” does not realize is how stupid he/she has made themselves look. Well, you can’t please everyone all the time (But who would want to please “Brad”?!) As for death by canned food, “Brad” has obviously never compared home canned goods to what you can buy at the supermarket! with all the recalls lately you could just as likely obtain food poisoning from them!

  27. margie says:

About the catwalk, you know the cats think thats a permanent fixture and its one of the bestest things about their new playhouse you’ve built them and you can’t ever take it down now don’t you? :cattail:

I was thinking the other day that you don’t write enough in your blogs, that I wanted to read more of your musings. duhh
I guess I’m gonna’ be reading your books now.

    margiesbooboo

  28. Jodi says:

I find Brad’s email hilarious…I can see why you didn’t want to delete it. It keeps you humble..eh? Sheesh!
I must be bored…because I just had to go to whogivesashit.com…interesting site! heh heh

  29. catslady says:

I think you handled it perfectly. I always told my girls to either ignore or laugh at people like that and it always worked – it’s no fun if you don’t get a rise out of someone and that’s their whole point – bad attention is better than no attention. It’s too bad they probably aren’t reading these posts – they’ve moved on hoping to get a rise out of someone else.

  30. Brandy says:

Oh, a troll. I guess BRAD PITT didn’t have anything better to do with his time than to badmouth someone he’s never read regulary OR met. Lovely.
Your blog is delightful and entertaining. Don’t worry about the troll! *G*

  31. Estella says:

I think the stupiderperson part says it all.

  32. mary burns says:

How Sad…isn’t it ridiculous that someone would actually take the time to right such a mean-spirited comment AND sign it Brad Pitt?? Wow, you have to wonder sometimes….
Just God Bless Him Back and don’t give it another thought…your Blog is GREAT and very beautiful and this is from a City Gal (with a LOVE of the country!!!)
    Hugs,
    Mary

  33. Kim W says:

Well, I guess all that rediculous hostility over the design of a blog just goes to show us all that all that money and kissing Angelina’s HUGE lips everyday doesn’t buy you happiness after all. :fryingpan: BTW…I, for one, like the design.

What a shame that someone doesn’t have anything better to do than try to hurt someone they probably don’t even know…someone who IS succeeding at seeing a life-long dream acutally come true! :snoopy: Well, maybe THAT’S the rub…they want someone to HAND them the dream instead of working hard and reaping the rewards.

So, Suzanne, happy Resurrection Day and blessings from Ohio…

  34. LinMN says:

Hey, that made me think of a line in one of country music singer Shania Twain’s songs where she says:
“Okay. So you’re Brad Pitt. That don’t impress me much.” LOL!

And the love/hate thing (yours and “Brad’s”)made me think of that country song by Jack Ingram called “Love You”…where he replaces every use of the F word with Love. If you aren’t listening the first time you hear it, you don’t realize what he’s saying. Twisted and funny. LOVE YOU, Brad!!!

I also just wanted to say I love your blog’s “face”. I think it’s homey and comfortable and country. Just what I like. And trolls like the one that hit you are everywhere. One even took the time to tell my young dd how horribly UGLY her snowflake was on a virtual snowflake website (popular front dot com) where there are over 6 million to choose from! That musta kept ’em busy for awhile!! Some people are just pathetic & hate themselves & have nothing better to do than try to make someone else feel crappy. I have a sil who’s like this. Why they enjoy hearing the sound of their own heart shriveling up…who can say. Be glad you only had to meet this one in fonts instead of in person.
Stay true to yourself and let the slime slide.

  35. Tori Lennox says:

This is still a happy place! But, man oh man, Angelina must have been a b*tch on wheels that day. :rotfl:

Bless poor ol’ Brad’s heart. LOL!

  36. annie says:

I am constantly amazed by people that believe they have the right to say anything they wish simply because they have the ability to form words and type at the same time. You are living the life many of us wish we could enjoy. https://chickensintheroad.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/clap.gif

  37. Lora says:

Ever read “An Ordinary Day, with Peanuts”? by Shirley Jackson?
There are some people out there who delight in being a buzz kill. It’s sad and funny and a little scary knowing someone else delights in taking away another’s joy.
I think if we all ignore them for long enough, they eventually implode and are reincarnated as kitty litter.

  38. Donna says:

I think he was using the abbreviated form of his name…..His real name is Bradley Pitiful

  39. Marilyn says:

Wasn’t that special? *In my best church lady voice*

Yeah, they can trace it to the home/office by the IP addy. I owned a forum for six years and began sending info to the ISPs. I figured if they were getting several complaints about the same people then they’d do something about it.

Do a search on ip address lookup and you’ll get some info. One quick check showed: Newark, OH. That may not be the actual town, but one near them. Regardless the ISP knows the exact location.

  40. Amy Addison says:

I’ll take you over Brad any day.

  41. Suzanne McMinn says:

Thank you for the encouraging–and some funny!–comments today!

  42. Mari says:

When i read stupidpersons comment, i had to chuckle, and then i said a little prayer, “Thank You God for not making me that stupid.” To You Suzanne,i say, Thank you for sharing such a stupid person with us, makes me want to run out and join Mensa, and i`m a blonde! I anxiously await anoter stupidperson comment!!

  43. Maria says:

Suzanne: I haven’t read all the comments, and I’m sure I’m repeating what others I”m sure have said…how awful..the sheer unhappiness of someone to take the time to write that. It’s terribly sad. Did she/he honestly think that it would really matter to you that they thought you couldn’t can or be a “real” farmer…paleeze..Glad you “outed” them. I just have an overwhelming sense of sadness when thinking about it…

  44. Barbara Howard says:

If you can’t can anything, how does he think he gets his food from the grocers that comes in cans? My ancestors were putting things in jars before there were glass jars ….stone jars. As far as I know, there are more people getting sick and dying from eating at restaurants and eating food from the grocer than from food prepared by us “downhome stupid folk”. There are also less pesticides, perservatives and hormones in what you can at home. If being stupid means eating good country cookin’ then….. pass the ‘taters and slice me some of that apple pie.

  45. Nicole Reising says:

HOLY MOLY Suzanne! I can’t believe someone took the time to write that. Posting someones ‘stupidity’ is awesome! Now if they could just get a life so they didn’t have time to sit around leaving unnecessary nasty notes. Ridiculous. I love coming to your blog–it’s a pick me up and a reminder that I used to live in the country and why I hope to return one day and that we all can follow our dreams. I love it.

    Cole

  46. Nyssa says:

Apparently we all disagree with Mr. Stupid Brad Pitt….he’s jealous

  47. Life is Mootiful says:

    :cowsleep: lol.
loving your blog. Happy farming, building, and all that.
You can be whatever you want to be. Even if Mr Pitt disagrees.

  48. Stitchin Bitch says:

Aw, Come On Brad! Give the girl a break! She’s trying something new, which is more than we can say for you. I was raised on a farm and love to see people realize what that lifestyle is all about…it isn’t easy. I’ve done the canning, gardening, chicken raising, fruit picking, and kid chasing.

Love the new house. I’m more than a little jealous that because of your writing you can live where ever you want!

  49. Ruth says:

Actually, that’s just hysterical!!! How big of an idiot, or how desperate for attention, do you have to be to send something like that to someone you totally don’t know? Just chalk it up as a pathetic person and let it go now.

  50. Jeanette Fields says:

Oh my gosh… that was sooo mean. And I loved it. Maybe if I am ever so lucky one day I might get a REALLY nasty comment too…. nah, I would probly get just a regular mean one…. and from somebody like Jack Nicholson.

    Oh yeah hun….God Bless!

P.S. Hang in there….. ANYONE can farm! Even stupid people….tee hee hee.

  51. Jeri says:

What a lovely person Brad Pitt is. Looking at his pictures on People Magazine on line everyday does not let you see the true person that he is. Ha Ha. Well Mr. or Ms. Nasty could have been more orginal. :rotfl: Well who cares what that person thinks. We all love you and the farm and your canning. So pooh pooh on him.

  52. gw says:

This is hysterical! I don’t know if I could bring myself to delete such a comment, either. :fan:

    I love your site.

I come very day to read what’s new, and I poke around in the archives, and have a great time reading. You are my morning newspaper. You have strengthened a strong desire I possess to leave the city and try taking care of myself on a small farm.

The thing with idiots, as you know, is that the more attention you pay them, the more they act up. I keep an image in my mind of an overweight, middleaged, miserable, socially challenged twit, sitting at a computer in the dark in his parent’s basement, dropping in on various sites, leaving little look-at-me tidbits scattered around, and then waiting for someone to pick them up… and then I just refuse to react, other than to delete, report if possible, and move on.

Anyway, that’s what works for me.

Please keep writing. I do enjoy the read!
