Today, I want to thank you all so much for all of your support. The best readers in the world are right here. I love you guys! Eat, drink, and be merry today! Especially pie. Eat a LOT of pie. (I know I will.)

To add to your holiday spirit, I have a little farm animal video montage for you. Just a little peek of what I see every day when I walk outside. And I even forced myself to be in it for like two seconds. I’m SHY! Do I look uncomfortable in front of the camera? I am. I was born to be behind the camera. But one of my goals in the next year is to make more videos, and better videos, and get over my phobia about being on camera. Here goes–enjoy! (Seen here: My chickens, who chase me because they THINK I have cracked corn all the time even though I ONLY have it at night; Poky, in one of her “I was born to run” moods where she does laps around the goat yard; my sweet Little, napping under my sewing box; Clover, being her usual superior self; my dear little lonely duck; the crooked little hen on the porch; and me.)

Random Thanksgiving memories….. The time my mom came to my house early and my dad stayed behind to leisurely get ready. Then an ice storm hit. My dad ate a TV dinner alone that Thanksgiving and my mother couldn’t get out of my driveway for three days.

The time we went to my Oklahoma grandmother’s house. She was pretty old by then. She had left all the food sitting out for days before we got there. (We found out later.) We all got sick. I searched in her medicine cabinet and found a box of Pepto-Bismol pills. We all took them. Then we read the little foil packets she had put inside the Pepto-Bismol box. Ex-Lax. IN HER PEPTO-BISMOL box. I really shouldn’t continue this story any further.

My mother would sing hymns in the kitchen when she was cooking, especially when fixing holiday dinners. I always think of that when I’m fixing holiday dinners. (My father was a preacher man. When I was growing up and we’d sing in church, people used to ask me why I never used the book. I knew all the hymns by heart. I went to church 5,490,286 times when I was growing up.) Those are the things that make up our memories, even when we think our parents are so weird.

I hope you have a wonderful day! I hope you make great memories. Do something weird in front of your kids today. Don’t get iced in. And please, please read all medicine packaging carefully!

That was adorable. From the front view, it looks like the donkey has on a beanie cap pulled down to his eyes because of his thick coat. The noise the cat made was my favorite. What a “good mood” video that was. It made me wish I was there visiting with them.

I thought you looked fine on camera. I really think you did a great job on your Sam-e video. I thought you narrated it beautifully and you looked very much at ease in your appearance in the end.

Off to vote – I am up way too late tonight (which explains the brain fade I just had when I posted this on yesterday’s comments).

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  2. Darlene says:

Just when I think your posts can’t get any better you hike it up a couple of more notches! The chickens cracked me up!! And then there’s Poky and it just goes ON!! They’re all so sweet! And then I’m falling out of my chair with laughter on your memories.

I’m off to cast my vote. Happy Thanksgiving!

  3. Debbie in PA says:

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family as well, Suzanne. Love the stories! Mine aren’t necessarily as finny, bu there they are…..When we were dating, Hubby and i would frequently do two holiday meals. My favorite was thre one where my SIL said dinner was at 4:30, and we said we would be there at 4:00. We were. Everyone else had already sat down and filled there plates! Very annoyed!

Another dating story….we were at my grandparents house and everyone was raving about her stuffing. After dinner, my then boyfriend and I went for a walk, and said he couldn’t understand the fuss about the stuffing (not exactly in those words)_..I said Oh everyone loves gramdmom’s oyster stuffing, and the boyfriend looked positivily ill. Hated seafood!

  4. Betty says:

Loved the video Suzanne, that Poky is just too cute for words!! Of all the animals I have had, have never had a Poky. I also have one lone duck, he is a Muscovy Duck…very large…he lives with the goats and thinks he is a goat. Have a Great Thanks-giving!!

  5. Julie Harward says:

I loved every bit of this post! Your sweet smile..the eyes tell it all! The cute little donkey and dog playing, did you name the duck yet? Loved the stories too! My kids still tease me about the red hots jello I made one year..they all hated it! Have a good one! 😀

  6. Jamie says:

  7. Yvonne says:

What a wonderful post this morning. Thank you so much for the video of your animals. Had to laugh at the Pepto-Bismol/Ex-Lax story. I remember being a little girl and getting into my grandmothers Ex-Lax because I thought it was chocolate candy.

Hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving today. I hope everyone here on this blog has a wonderful Thanksgiving also.

    Off to vote.

I am so Thankful to have your blog to read every day~I can’t tell you how much I enjoy it and it has gotten me through so many “slow” days at work lately… I know~ Just what I should be thinking about at work~ but there are times that I just have to escape my world and enter into yours~Its therapy!
    Hugs 🙂
P.S. Is it wrong to be eating a piece of oatmeal pecan pie at 6:30 in the morning?? LOL… I thought I was doing good, I woke up at 4:30 wanting a piece but was able to hold off for a few more zzz’s~

Loved the video……..great start to my day! Family is looking like they’re waking, but I had to take my time to get my “Chicken” time! Cocoa has a playmate her own size!! Loved it!

Congratulations to all of the calendar winners!! WooHoo! Can’t wait to see the new contest!

  18. Nanny's Notions says:

Hi there  …I just wanted to let you know that I’ve been enjoying your blog for the past few weeks.

Thanks for the video…though I would have freaked out if the chickens were chasing me. As a child I was fascinated with old Aunt Jettie’s flock, but Mom always warned that they would “flog” me…so I developed a fear of them.

Wishing you and yours the happiest of Thanksgivings! :hungry:
    Nanny

  19. Johanna says:

Happy Thanksgiving! Thanks for the video — it’s fun to see someone else’s farm. And the stories. I would have posted one, but Debbie in PA had my story! Now to wake up the dogs (they always seem to sleep in on holidays!) and go open up the chickens and duck for the day. There’s a hint of s*5w in the air — Christmas is coming!

  25. Diane says:

Happy Thanks Giving!!!! The video was great. And what a nice way to start the morning.

Thanks Giving stories. One year my mom cooked dinner for all of us after I got married. We are waiting for the turkey to get done. She did not want the turkey drippings and stuff to leak down to the bottom of her stove from the disposible pan. So she put the pan on one of those cookie sheets that is an even flow. It had a space in between the layers to promote even cooking and not to burn cookies. But it also did not get hot enough to cook the turkey in a timely manner. That was the year of “was the turkey done enough or not” Some went into the microwave just to make sure. lol. Then the next year her oven broke over Thanksgiving and did not get hot enough. Again almost raw turkey. We tease mom about not being able to cook turkey. lol. She is a great cook. But darn those turkeys always get the best of her. Needless to say we spend several Thanksgivings eating out becuase of this. lol.

  29. Darlene in North Georgia says:

Love the Thanksgiving memories you shared.
My own memories include an aunt, just married that couldn’t boil water deciding to have the family over for her first Thanksgiving. Not much happened – except – she set her oven on fire, burned part of the dinner and didn’t have enough places for everyone to sit. Did I mention she was a new bride. lol

  30. Runningtrails says:

LOVED the video. I watched it several times. lol! My goofy chickens do that too. Sometimes I can’t put a foot down when I’m walking slowly without stepping on some chicken feet. If I stop, they stand on my boots!

    I thought you looked great!

My favourite are the coco, poky scenes. I so want a dog like coco!

Thanks so much for the laughter at the memories!

Thank you Suzanne for another beautiful post. I sent the link to friends to enjoy. Have to laugh at Coco and Poky. My donkeys chase each other, too. All around the barn, the pasture, in one door of the loafing shed and out the other, round and round they go. Then the “chased” turns around and becomes the “chaser”. I adore my horses, but they don’t put on comedy shows like the donkeys do. Have a blessed holiday, and I wish the same for your family, friends and blog readers.

  37. Lish says:

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE! I hope you all have a wonderful day with family and friends and good food. Suzanne…loved your video especially seeing Pocahontas chasing Coco…now I know our donkey Phoebe is normal and not sometimes a maniac trying to assasinate the poor chickens and dogs. Love the farm sounds and best of all is seeing you…my husband even came in to watch the video and said it looked like a happy place! See…you radiate happiness so that makes you perfect for the Sam-e blog. Oh…and I voted again this morning. :hungry2: (pitchfork!)

  57. Myrna Mackenzie says:

It’s Thanksgiving, it’s crazy (in a fun way), but I just had to stop by for a few minutes to read your blog (and vote, of course). I loved Little pushing at the camera with his paw!

So, now that I’m grounded, having had my dose of “feel good” here, I’ll get back to cooking. Not a great cook, but I make one great dish (other than pie). It’s a casserole with a touch of stuffing base topped with sautéed onions, green peppers, zucchini, mushrooms and tomato, all seasoned with thyme and topped with melted swiss.

Congratulations to the lucky calendar winners. And to Suzanne and everyone here, have a wonderful Thanksgiving! And if you’re from somewhere other than the US, have a great day!

If I can get my sister’s Internet working, I’ll click back here later and share your video with my family. I know they’ll love it. Some of us are city through and through, but I think that almost everyone has a little touch of “country” in them when it comes to enjoying the simples pleasures in life. Chickens in the Road is like a daily meditation. When you walk away from the computer, you feel ready to face the world.

  58. Nancy in Iowa says:

Thank you for the lovely Thanksgiving video! I love watching your staff run after you…hilarious! And I can’t decide if Pokey thinks she’s a dog or Coco thinks she’s a donkey. Last night I grated cheese and chopped onions in prep for making your scalloped corn this morning to take to my daughter and SIL’s house – this will be my best Thanksgiving ever, spent with my brand new grandson!!! I’m a first-time grandma, so you know what I’ll be doing – holding the baby!!!

  59. Hannah says:

Happy Thanksgiving too! 😀 You do look a little uncomfortable. Don’t worry, it’ll get better with practice! And enough thanking me(us), we’re all thankful for you! You provided us with entertainment, heart-warming stories, and too many laughs to keep track of! Thank you!

  60. Jo says:

Happy Thanksgiving to all of Suzanne’s readers and to Suzanne and her family! :sheep:

Oh my, the Oklahoma Grandmother story is so funny. I think I might be just like her someday!

    Happy Thanksgiving,

  63. Gail says:

Suzanne, Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! I enjoyed the video so much and loved seeing the farm critters in action. Coco and Poky running was especially cute and the kitty paw reaching out to the camera lens was precious. Thank you for sharing and writing such a wonderful blog for all of us to enjoy! Your blog is the best one of all the ones I read!

    P.S.- I didn’t get the woodstove but I got a DONKEY!

  64. BuckeyeGirl says:

I think the video is tops too! Loved seeing all of your ‘staff’ 😆 What fun! You look fine on camera and as I decided a while ago, better to relax and accept the fact that ‘Pictures Happen!’ Just roll with it and have fun! You do that so well everywhere else, just go for it in front of a camera too.

Gotta get back to work now! Glad to see so many folks taking a few minutes to peek in to make sure the Chickens are still In The Road!!! :chicken: :chicken: :chicken: I know mine are!

Happy Thannksgiving and many blessings for more and more each year to you, your family and friends out there! Loved the video!

  68. Barbee' says:

That video is absolutely the CUTEST thing – I love every part of it, thank you! Didn’t know you have such pretty blue eyes! And, your stories had me laughing so much I had to read them out loud to my husband so he would understand. My story: I grew up in the country and our big dinner was made up of what was available – being that time of year when turnips were dug, turnips were always part of the banquet’s menu. For me it is not Thanksgiving if there are no turnips on the table. I grew up, cooked turnips every T.G., but our 4 children never liked them. Now days, one of our daughters has us over to her house, and she once said, “And, mother, if you want turnips, you will have to bring them!” ..Happy Thanks Giving to everyone!..

  69. Patty says:

Happy Thanksgiving to you and everyone there! Loved the video!

  76. Estella says:

  77. Jan Alexander says:

I’m late getting to read your blog today. Loved the stories! You have such great memories. The video was just precious. Your animals have the cutest personalities. They must have taken on some of yours. Thanks for finishing up my Thanksgiving with a great blog. Happy Thanksgiving (what’s left of it. LOL)

  78. Sharon Gosney says:

Loved the story…too funny. And the video was awesome, especially Poco and the giant puppy playing.I also think that your cat is also camera shy. I sure would love to spend my day with all the animals. Happy Thanksgiving to all of my south of the border neighbours.

  79. Nancy in Iowa says:

Thank you so much for being a part of our Thanksgiving! I made your scalloped corn and it was wonderful. The only problem was that when we spooned to the bottom, it was watery. I suspect I didn’t add enough bread crumbs! I didn’t measure – just made what looked like enough. But oh, so flavorful!! Thanks.

And again – Happy Thanksgiving to you and all your varieties of staff for making every day start out delightful.

  80. Shelley says:

Loved the video. Having 5 hens of my own, I love to see other people’s chickens! So very sweet. Cheers to you!

Loved the story of the OK holiday! The dog and donkey playing is hilarious! You are very natural in front of the camera, Suzanne. I thought you were very genuine.

  85. Carol Langille says:

I know this is late to be posting something for Thanksgiving Day comments but it’s the first few minutes I’ve had for quiet and alone-time. Hubby is in bed asleep, daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter and grandson are home now. Both cats are snoozing on the couch and I’m not far from bedtime, either. But I wanted to thank you personally, Suzanne, for all you do for US, your ‘other family’. You brighten our days, you make us cry sometimes, you teach us new things to do and aspire to, you give us recipes and step-by-step pictorial instructions….but most of all, you share your life with us. You are a fine person….quality, as my grandmother would have said. It shows in everything you do and every word you speak to us. Thank you, dear….thank you truly.

  86. cranberry says:

Video is wonderful, thank you, Happy Thanksgiving!

  87. Christy says:

ME TOO! (the part about your dad being a preacher) We lived in a very rural area and he preached at 2 churches. While he preached at one the other would have Sunday School so I never got to go to Sunday School but got 2 church services every Sunday morning, one Sunday night and prayer meeting on Wed. evening. I think I’ve been to at least as many church services as you. 🙂
