All the Pretty Pickles

Pints of Sweet Gherkins right out of the canner.

I’ve been hankering after Sweet Gherkin pickles for awhile–home-canned, not from the store! Sweet Gherkins are my favorite pickles to snack on. This year we finally achieved both a good cucumber crop AND picking them small enough–and I have my home-canned Sweet Gherkins!

It takes five days to make them (the recipe says wait overnight or 6 to 8 hours between changing out the pickling liquid, but I just waited overnight every time) and it’s worth it. Each day’s effort changing out the pickling liquid only takes a few minutes. On the final day, you just can them in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes and you have pickles! They look really pretty in the jars, too.

Up next, I’ll be canning bread and butter pickles then some sweet relish. You?

(You can find the recipe for the Sweet Gherkin Pickles here.)

    The pickles are bee-you-tee-ful.

My grandma always made garlic dills. There is nothing better.

My cousin grows cukes to make pickles, but she is stingy with hers. For example, she is willing to share once in awhile, but only the old ones. I think she is up to giving away 2004 pickles this year. Ugh. Not snappy and crispy!

    BBB, yes!

  54. lavenderblue says:

Praiz mentioned Boston Pickling cucumbers. Is there one type of cucumber that is better to pickle than others? I don’t have the room for it, now, but even when I did, I never had good luck getting cucumbers to grow, even though we grew squash and melon in the same soil. Wouldn’t they like the same nutrients? Maybe a forum topic, huh?

Congratulations, ashmmorgan, on getting your farm. (I do hope I got your name right) May you grow an abundance of cucumbers, next year.

    BBB, please!
