Blueberry Blues (BBB)

Jun
24

Remember my blueberries? I posted this picture when I wrote about my raspberries. I’m still collecting raspberries. (I’m up to two cups!) I was thinking I would use my mere handful of blueberries (new bush) combined with my wild raspberries and wild blackberries to make a mixed berry jam.

Then the chickens ate my handful of blueberries.

But not to despair! Foodland had blueberries on sale for a dollar a pint. A DOLLAR A PINT! They are usually priced at nearly three dollars a pint. I was gonna get 10 pints and make blueberry-lime jam and blueberry pie filling!

Then Foodland said, oops, that was a misprint. And they didn’t honor the misprint.

Dear Foodland,

You disappoint me. You are a dishonorable knave. You are like a chicken to me. Nay, my chickens are BETTER THAN YOU.

Love,
Suzanne

(Had to get that out of my system.)

Anyway, if YOU are so lucky as to have blueberries, here is the recipe I was going to use:
Blueberry-Lime Jam

For more delicious recipes, you need a BBB!

I  blueberries, especially wild blueberries! I come from Nova Scotia originally, and will be returning there within the next couple of years. Nova Scotia is reknowned for their wild blueberries, which taste unlike anything you can find in stores. They’re much smaller, but pack so much more flavour! Your post had me remembering my childhood days of picking wild blueberries where we lived.. If the land we purchase down there doesn’t have wild blueberry bushes on it, I think I’ll get us some of these: https://www.novascotiagardening.com/product.detail.php?prod_id=618 Beautiful!!

And also, I would like to put my name in for the BBB please! πŸ™‚

Bad chickens, Bad Foodland. I don’t need a BBB, but I’ll just say that up here in Maine, you can buy 15 pounds of wild blueberries from a guy out of the back of a truck in August for around $25. Not a dollar a pound, but still the best blueberries around and a great deal. My freezer always has some.

  35. HomesteadJen says:

BBB Please. And poo on a store that doesn’t honor their misprints. Bad business. We have wild blackberries and I am just itching for them to ripen up!

  36. holstein woman says:

My chickens got all my blueberries last year before I got my new plant in the ground, Not this year, I have a fence and I know how to use it. I wish I could send you some, but there aren’t that many and they wouldn’t be good by the time I got them to you.
I am really enjoying your posts. Thank you for taking the time to do them.

  47. MonkeyPhil says:

When we grew BlueBerries up north it was necessary to net them as soon as the berries began to show any blue. Apparently the birds could strip our seven bushes in less than seven minutes. When we were able to get berries we just ate them. Sooooo good.

  48. JerseyMom says:

I hate it when that happens! Shoprite did it to me with turkeys this year…grrrr!

Wild blueberries abound in the woods here and there are lots of pick your own farms. Now if I could just find time to go do that…..they are not as expensive in the store as last year but still pretty dear if you want a bunch. BBB please!

  68. Vicki in So. CA says:

I’m sorry to hear of the sad berry saga. Again 1/2 inch hardware cloth comes to the rescue. Not only does it protect animals from predators, but it protects produce too. Those small openings allow only the chicken’s beak can get through…not very far. Of course it looks like your plants are in prison, but at least you get to harvest the fruit/veggies. We use it, along with a skirt of twisted-up bird netting around the perimeter, to keep squirrels out of our vegetable garden.
    Your jam sounds delicious!
    BBB please.

  86. blahblahblacksheep says:

We are blessed where I live. There is a blue berry park here. The owners of the blue berry farm willed it to the city. So now the city owns in and cannot destroy it for its own selfish city reasons. So a group of volunteers maintain it. The public can pick their hearts desire of blue berries! There are also nut trees, apple trees and one other kind of tree that I have forgotten what it produces. All of this goodness for free. We are blessed! BBB please. Or maybe I’m too late?
