FOOTBALL CAMP AT WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY!!!!!!!!!!!
My 13-year-old son went to the Rich Rodriguez Football Camp at WVU in Morgan-town this week. He played in the stadium! Planned plays with college coaches! Slept in a dorm room! Ordered two pizzas every night! Got a nickname–Monster! Made a new friend whose nickname was Horsechild! He must have had a good time because he didn’t want it to be over and he can’t wait to go back next year. He’s playing football in school this fall and he is PUMPED up about it. He was particularly excited about getting his football autographed by WVU Mountaineers, including quarterback Pat White and tailback Steve Slaton, as well as head coach Rich Rodriguez. Below, he is having his photograph taken with our close personal friend Rich Rodriguez (in the white shirt, left) during football camp registration. Okay, Rodriguez was being interviewed and I made Weston stand in front of him while I took a picture…….. We’re close, though, really close!!!!

Well, that’s our camping for the summer, 4-H camp and football camp. The kids are camped out now! I never went to camp when I was a kid except for church camp. Church of Christ church camp. That was exciting, let me tell you….. Okay, no it wasn’t and there is nothing to tell. Did you go to summer camp when you were a kid? Tell me about your childhood summer camp, or if you didn’t go, or what kinds of camps your kids are going to this summer–and one random comment number will be chosen for their autographed pick from my contemporary backlist!

  1. Angie says:

Suzanne, your son is Weston?? My older son’s middle name is Weston! This is the first time I have ever heard of another kid with that name! How cool is that?
Anyhoo…I went to girl scout camp for a week. We slept in these wooden frame things that had a tent for the sides and roof….no real cabins! Only the counselors got those. Bi*ches. πŸ‘Ώ
The sides rolled up during the day and you rolled them down at night! They were kinda like a wooden deck, as you had to walk up 3 steps to the platform with the beds and they had wooden floors.
The most exciting things that happened were one girl almost stepped on a rattle snake while walking to the craft tent and another girl pushed her put of the way. And you had to check your shoes before putting them one because scorpions liked to sleep in them. 😯
You only got to use the hot showers every other day….and the cold shower on your “off” day.
But it was so much fun…swimming, crafts, hiking, and horses! :sigh:
I sure miss those days sometimes.

  2. Becki says:

My camping consisted of living in a floored canvas tent for a month in grad school. It got cold (October in Lubbock) and I fled to an apartment.

My daughter is going “camping”– a week visiting hernAnt in Minnesota! Should be a great temperature change from the Texas coast.

What will I do without her?:bananadance::bananadance::bananadance:

    :bananadance:

  3. Laurie says:

    Hi,
Weston doesn’t look like he likes to have Mom take his picture!
Camp I went two summers to girl scout camp loved learning how to canoe and craft activities. I even brought home a mouse in my suitcase… my MOM loved me after that experience!!
My kids have no desire to go to any camp…they don’t want to leave their friends!

  4. Robyn says:

One summer I went to Bible camp as an assistant councillor, so to speak. We slept in cabins in bunk beds. The councillor, who had dark hair, said she hated blondes(which I was). LOL>

  5. Sonja says:

Only camps I ever went to were training camps for summer volunteer work. They were sorta fun, in a Bible-thumping kind of way. You’d be amazed what kids find to do when the are obligated by morals not to make out with each other, smoke pot, or drink. We had some good times. Good clean fun, as they say.

  6. Minna says:

Nope, never went to a summer camp, unless you count a confirmation camp as one. I guess it wasn’t very memorable, because the way I remember it, it was a bit like sitting on religion lessons, except you weren’t doing it at the school and one of the “teachers” was a priest.

  7. Marcy says:

I went to a church camp for several summers during middle school, but unlike Suzanne I had a blast! We slept in cabins. The girls were on one side of the clearing, the boys on the other. We had a mandatory quiet hour in the afternoons when we had to retire to our cabins. When the bell rang to announce it was over I’d go outside and yell “Hubba-Hubba” as loud as I could. I also learned my first kinda’ dirty song :wigglebrow: and had my first major crush. Ahh…Freddie was so cute! *sigh* I still have pictures from those summers.

My dh and my younger ds are at Cub Scout camp right now. They return Saturday and my older ds leaves Sunday for his stay at Boy Scout camp. 😎

  8. Melissa says:

 I never went to summer camp.

  9. Jennifer Y. says:

I used to go to a day camp every summer…it was held at Stone Mountain park near my house. We had all kinds of crafts, archery, games, and things to do each day. I never went to sleep-away camp, but the older campers got to have a campout at the camp on the last day. We all stayed overnight in tents and both years I went it rained really bad and they had to move us. I am not a nature person I guess. LOL

  10. Estella Kissell says:

I never went to camp when I was a child. There weren’t any . My children went to church camp when they were growing up.

  11. Joyce says:

My one son went to basketball camp at Seton Hall Univ. It was a great experience for him. He learned a lot. He also got a feel for dorm life which was a great help for when he went away to college.:bananadance:

  12. Cheryl S. says:

Sadly, I have lived these many years without the summer-camp experience. My children are deprived so far also as they have not been to camp either. πŸ˜•

  13. Tori Lennox says:

Church of Christ church camp. That was exciting, let me tell you

    I can just imagine. :bananadance:

  14. April Redmon says:

I was too much of a baby to go to camp! πŸ™‚ Even our Church of Christ camp. πŸ™‚

I miss that kind of excitement, the enthusiasm kids feel when they get pumped up about something. I only feel that way when I get to go to an RWA:rotfl: conference. πŸ™‚

  15. Maureen says:

I went tent camping with my Girl Scout troop for a weekend and that illustrated to me that camping was not something I ever wanted to do again.

  16. Carol says:

I went to a Girl Scout day camp if that counts. The bus picked us up in the morning and brought us home in the evening. The only thing I remember about it is we went for walks in the woods.

  17. ruby55 says:

I went to church camp when I was a kid–nine when I first went. Then later I went as a counselor. I always loved the time well, except for the time that we took along my brother (born just after my first camp experience). Oh, and we never slept in tents. We had cabins.

Anyway, my little brother must have bee around 4 and my father was chauffering about five of us girls 80 miles. My brother kept getting sicker and sicker as we drove on our merry way. I took him on my lap and just before we reached safe haven, he brought up all over me and the back seat of the car. I think he just managed to avoid the friend sitting next to me. And the smell. Maybe that’s why I hate it so much. I always want to puke as well.

But we always enjoyed church camp. We’d hike looking for blueberries, go on the fire-watch tower, find native sites with stones arranged in patterns. One year we even had a chance to ride some horses. We did churchy stuff too and I can’t remember anybody ever complaining about that. Of course, we were always by a lake. So that made anything bearable. I can remember one year, though, when the temperature was over 100 and we had one of the older ministers there. At first he didn’t want us to go swimming on the Sunday but finally broke down. And the fun stories the missionaries told. No, can’t say we were bored at all.

Here my nephews went to Christian hockey camp. They were definitely eager to go.

  18. catslady says:

I never got to go as a kid so I made sure my two girls got the chance with Girl Scouts and I went all but once – 3 years as an assistant leader and the rest as just a mom – The best year was when all 3 of us were there at the same time.

  19. Jeanette Jackson says:

I’ve never been to camp either…I’ve only ever been camping one time when I was a kid with my friend for a weekend. I went to a day camp kind of thing when visiting my cousins…they had crafts for us to do etc and we went home at the end of the day

  20. TeresaH says:

I went to church camp a couple times in the Sierra Nevada mountains, more specifically Big Bear. IT was fun, esp. the first year when we slept in tents and cooked over a campfire. The next time I went we had cabins and cooked in a kitchen which to me took away the “camping” feel. I love camping!

  21. KimW says:

Now if anyone says that you are raising a Monster it will be true. haha!

I went camping with the Girl Scouts several times. It was a long, long time ago but I remember it as being fun.

  22. Debbie says:

My son also attended WVU Football camp. He’s 10 years old and we considered it an experience of a lifetime for him.
Rich Rodriguez and his coaching staff did a phenomenial job in conducting this camp and providing instuctions to the youth.

  23. Crystal says:

I never went to camp. My parents were afraid to let me out of their sight. LOL
