Meet The Parents

My parents! They came to visit for two weeks, though unfortunately my mother isn’t feeling well so they are going home early. My parents are WONDERFUL grandparents. They love to spend time with their grandkids, and my mother loves to bake cookies and just listen, listen, listen to them talk. My kids adore them, too, so I was surprised at church yesterday when my 12-year-old kept begging me to switch seats with him at church. He was sitting next to his grandfather. Please switch with me, he kept whispering to me. Please, please, please. Finally I said, why, why why. I love how weirdly frank children are….

“Because,” he said, “he’s old and he smells musty.”

I must use that in a book someday………… (And no, he didn’t get to switch seats!)

  1. Mary says:

Aw, poor grandpa! It’s nice your kids can see their grandparents.

  2. Estella says:

Your children are lucky to have grandparents—–My mother was the only grandparent my kids had and she passed away before they were old enough to appreciate her.

  3. Peggy says:

My children used to adore their grandparents too. But then they became teenagers. Hopefully, grandparents will be around a little bit longer (in their 80’s) for when they become adults and switch back to adoring their grandparents.

  4. Katie says:

Awwww. Poor grandpa. Your kids are so lucky to have involved, loving, musty grandparents!

  5. Mechele Armstrong says:

Enjoy them! It’s wonderful that your kids have grandparents. Too funny about your son. LOL yes use that in a book.

I hope your Mom feels better.

  6. MartyK says:

Sending best wishes for your mom–hope they have safe travel and she feels better soon 😀

  7. Mik says:

I love that my son has his grandparents. I was never fortunate to have any.

Kids are so funny! I love how honest they are. :rotfl:

  8. Caro says:

i think it’s great your kids want to spend time with their grandparents — sometimes I think grandparents are something we don’t appreciate until they’re gone. I know I treasure the memories of my grandparents and my great-grandmother (who was quite a woman, let me tell you).

Best wishes for safe travel for your parents and I hope your mother feels better soon.

  9. Jill says:

Gotta love how brutally frank they are, lol!

  10. Toni Anderson says:

Aww!! Poor grandpa!!! Kids, gotta love em. My 5 year old has a piping piercing voice that travels  if sh’ed said that the whole church would have heard–except my grandad who is as deaf as a post 🙂

  11. Amy K. says:

LOL Musty! Hope your mom feels better soon.

  12. Lynn Daniels says:

BWAHAHAHAHA! OMG, that line’s classic. Gotta love kids.

  13. Emma S says:

LOL! But he’s right. There is a very distinctive old person smell!

    Hope your mom’s feeling better!

  14. Tori says:

    :rotfl: Poor grandpa!

  15. Robyn says:

Trust your Mom gets to feeling better. I just lost both parents in 2 yrs. and 1 month to the date; I feel sad for my younger nieces and nephews that their grandparents are gone.

  16. Kelly says:

Oh gosh! The things the kiddos admit out loud! 😆

  17. Melissa Marsh says:

Wish your parents didn’t have to leave so early! I just returned from visiting mine (they’re divorced, so I have to try and spend equal amounts of time with both) and really enjoyed it.

  18. Maureen says:

It’s always amusing to hear your children’s perspective on your parents. My daughter does hysterical impersonations of my parents.

  19. Sandy J says:

Hope your parents feel better soon. I now have twin grandsons (not that I am OLD enough, of course) and they are so funny and so much fun. Should’ve had them first!

  20. ruby55 says:

I’m so sorry about your mom. I’ll pray she feels better soon. And yes, I know my last remaining grandmother who died at 91 definitely had that “old person” smell too.

I can’t remember any of my grandparents sitting down with me and telling me stories. My maternal grandmother died when I was 5, my paternal grandfather when I was 10. I knew the former best and can imagine her telling me stories. She was present when I was born and for several years after that. Unfortunately, I can’t remember it.

My nephews and nieces have all appreciated their grandparents on both sides at one point or another. As teenagers they do get a different perspective on “old” people. I have to rely on my siblings to provide me with “grands”. I have a great-nephew who’s a real sweetheart but getting sassy too at 3 and a great-niece who’s 20 days old and whom I haven’t seen yet. I certainly hope to soon. Apparently she had a baby shower from her mother’s side of the family yesterday. Our side’s was in July before that part of the family got too involved in running their lodge. Only the two oldest grandkids got to know my father. He died in 1983.

  21. Margery Scott says:

LOL. Too funny. I adore being a grandma. Hmm, must check – do I smell musty?

  22. Melissa Mc says:

Musty. LOL. Hope they have a safe journey home and your mom feels better soon!

  23. Danica says:

Awe, how cute. I hope your mom feels better soon.

  24. Teresa says:

Kids can be so brutally honest!
