Parallel Parking

Who in their right mind parallel parks unless absolutely necessary? I can’t remember the last time I parallel parked. It probably looked something like the picture to the left when I did.

“16” took his driving test last Monday and failed because he hit the barrels during the parallel parking portion of the road test. The rest of the road test consists of driving around the block. So, it’s basically a parallel parking test since that is the only difficult part of the road test. If they want to test one thing while doing a road test, they should probably test people’s skills using a cell phone while driving. That would be a more useful test of people’s actual ability to drive since people use cell phones just about every time they get in the car and most people can avoid parallel parking almost completely.

This morning, we’re going to the DMV to try again. We went to the DMV parking lot last night and he practiced parallel parking for an hour. He never hit the barrels once. If he can just get his tires on the line and not hit the curb, I think he’s got it nailed. Wish him luck? Or wish me luck if he does pass it because then he’s got a license to drive!! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ (Can you parallel park?)

So, we’re off! Tomorrow: The Results!

  1. Nicole Reising says:

I do know how to parallel park… but my gramp spent forever teaching me after I failed the first test because of it. We grew up in the middle of nowhere… there wasn’t such a thing! But for the test I had to do it in town… ๐Ÿ™‚ I will say though, I always grin when I do it… its such a silly thing I suppose but I love it! I feel like I just accomplished climbing a mountain! ๐Ÿ™‚ Good luck to your son!

  2. Crystal B. says:

I learned to parallel park for the driving test but didn’t have to do it because the streets were crowded. I don’t do it if I don’t have to. Too much of a hassel and the potential of hitting another vehicle.
I hope your son passes. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Jill says:

Oh boy. Do you have to buy him a car now?

  4. Danica/Dream says:

Parallel parking… are you kidding? Hubby does it like a rock star. Me… I’m so bad at it and afraid to do it that I will go to great lengths to avoid it. ICK!

  5. Susan says:

Good luck to your son!

  6. Becki says:

Hubby does it perfect every time. NEVER has to back ina and out or send a passenger out to help navigaate.

Me? Wwhen I took my test ?? years ago, it was pouring rain. Buckets and buckets. The trooper was supposed to move the markers to the right location, but he wasn’t inclined to get out of the car to do so.
    :drowning:

He had me drop him off at the side door (employees only entrance, which was covered) I came in a couple of minutes later completely soaked.

I passed, but the picture was so awful I spent the next four years being very good so I never got a ticket.

Good lucck to you both. :drowning:

  7. Marianne says:

I lived in a place where the ONLY parking was paralell… so, yeah, I can — blindfolded if necessary. But it wasn’t easy to learn, nor was it on my driving test (thank heavens, since I couldn’t do it at sixteen).

Good luck vibes being sent your way. :shimmy:

  8. Marianne says:

Crikey! I can’t spell…. argh!!! Parallel, parallel, parallel.

Ever notice when you write something over and over, it never looks quite right?

  9. Lis says:

Good luck to your son!
My uncle always says the only time you ever need to parallel park is during the test and never again lol

  10. Tori Lennox says:

As I recall, though it’s been a long time I don’t think about it so don’t really remember, I failed parallel parking. But they gave me a license anyway. And, yeah, if I ever had to parallel park somewhere, I always looked for a spot I could pull into. Getting out was always easier than getting in. *g*

  11. Angie T says:

If God had meant for us to parallel park, he would not have given us the technology to develop cars that do it for us.
If I can’t pull into the space, I ain’t parking.
    I can if I have to, but I don’t wanna…and you can’t make me! ๐Ÿ˜†

  12. ericka Scott says:

I don’t parallel park unless it’s an emergency! Good luck to 16!

  13. Cheryl S. says:

Ummm . . . . I’m one of the insane ones. I got a better score on the parallel parking portion of the test than the actual driving part. And I actually enjoy the challenge. Hope your son passed it with flying colors this time.

  14. Biddy says:

Well living in central London means you have to know how to parallel park otherwise you are in big trouble!! Also how to perform this in tiny spaces and fast so as not to upset the traffic flow. I am very good on oneside of the road but useless on the other. And when I took my test you didn’t have to learn how to parallel park but you did have to reverse round a corner… hmmm.

  15. catslady says:

It took my first daughter twice to get that right. Luckily the second passed right away. I had to do it when both the girls were in preschool lol. So it’s been twenty years for me having to do it. I wonder if it’s like learning to ride a bike (which I never did hahaha).

  16. Dru says:

I’m trying to remember how do you parallel park. As long as I live where I live, I won’t ever have to worry about driving or parking.

    Good luck to “16” tomorrow.

Thanks for the book. Addy is on it’s way.

  17. Michelle Willingham says:

I avoid parallel parking at all costs! Thankfully I didn’t have to do it on my test.

  18. Marty says:

I took my driver’s test with a family friend…he kept telling me what was coming up next :shimmy: including the parallel parking ๐Ÿ™ Good luck!

  19. Ashley says:

Can I? Yes. Do I? Not if I can avoid it. I flunked the driving test for the same reason when I took it. Ugh.
