People with Too Much Time on Their Hands Should Get a Farm

Dec
17

Yesterday, I woke up to discover my website had been hacked.

Some suggested it might be a Kitten and Little prank.
IMG_1989
Others wondered if the ghost of Mean Rooster could be involved.
IMG_7912
Or could it be Clover, angry over the tiara she’s not getting for Christmas?
IMG_8456
Or Jack, upset over the lack of attention?
IMG_2164
But in fact it was one of those very strange human beings who exist to manufacture trouble for innocent people. As someone noted yesterday, people like this should get a farm so they can have more constructive ways to occupy their time. In any case, I want you to know that I have expert technical and maintenance support on this website. (I don’t maintain this site by myself. I don’t have the technical expertise.) My site is continually updated and secured. Spammers and hackers can’t always be stopped, even with expert care. It has been a frustrating experience. My site was thoroughly corrected by not only my own professional tech but also technical support from my hosting company.

As to what happened, someone hacked into my server and placed malicious code on my site. It was a deliberate attack. This caused warning flags to appear to many of the visitors to my site, and my site was blocked by Google. (Even AFTER it was fixed. It takes time for the block to clear even after the site has been restored.) I’ve worked very hard on this website every single day for years, and I rely on this website to make a living. (I don’t want to dwell too much on my distress, but let me just say that I’m distressed.) I’m really just a girl on a farm with a blog. Someone left me a comment recently accusing me of being a self-promoter. YES, I AM. This is how I earn my living, writing this blog. But it’s not the only reason I do it. I do it because I love it and I love doing it for you. It’s my little positive thing to do in the world. And I’m absolutely devastated that this happened.

What does this mean to you other than possibly not being able to access my site yesterday? You can (should) run a virus check on your computer as a precaution. Please take this as a reminder to use updated virus protection because any website, email, or other information received over the internet at any time can fall victim to a hacker or spammer.

Unfortunately, yesterday, it was my website.

Fortunately, they thought I was worth hacking. (Right???)

Bear with me as I try to look on the (dubious) bright side of a terrible event. The Pioneer Woman website was hacked recently in a similar manner, so I’m trying to take this unpleasant assault as a compliment.

Not one I really wanted to receive.

In the meantime, I have received notification that my website has been officially reviewed and cleared by Google. It may take up to 24 hours for the UNblocking to propagate across the internet. Some users may still receive warnings. Again, I want to assure you that I have expert, professional technical support on this and my server is being monitored. I have done, and am continuing to do, everything I can. This was an extensive, vicious, and intentional attack. My site has been thoroughly cleaned and restored.

It’s my promise to you to be here every day. I apologize for not being able to be here yesterday for many of you.

*I want to thank the people who made such quick work of cleaning up a truly massive insertion of malicious code. (I recommend these people!) My own professional designer and technical expert, Emily Carlin of Swank Web Style, along with the abuse and security specialists at Surpass Hosting. Thank you also to my readers for your patience!

I can’t sleep so does that mean I get to be first!? So glad you are back and so sorry that some people are just mean! Hang in there. I know, as a long time reader I’m not going anywhere…hackers or not!

  2. Gen says:

Ugh, how terrible! Please know that we are not all so jealous and malicious. I am glad to have you back and my mom reported that she is officially addicted as well. : )

  3. Lucy says:

I have a ~skinny~ section of favorites that I read every day. You are #1 on the list – you’re positive, funny, interesting and down-to-earth. I hate that someone took the time to try to spoil your site. Thanks for what you do everyday, it brings a moment of sunshine to me each time I check in!

  4. Hallie says:

Sorry you had to endure such wicked mischief, but rest assured that your regular readers will not be put off by such antics. Stay warm and give your sweet donkeys a pat from me!

  5. ScreamingSardine says:

Suzanne, I know it’s easier said than done, but don’t take it personally. I’ve had my sites hacked as well. Hmmm…come to think of it, I guess you should take it personally because the people who do the hacking are – literally – quite green with envy! Please rest assured that for every one pathetic person like the hacker and a detractor here and there, there are hundreds who respect, admire, and are quite fond of you.

  6. Myrna Mackenzie says:

Suzanne, I was upset for you yesterday, but if there was one positive, it was that people wanted to come here to read the blog. They persisted, and on a day when the site was disrupted there were still over forty comments on the main page. To me, that means that the hackers didn’t achieve…whatever it was that they wanted to achieve. Suzanne – 1, Hackers – 0

I’m never quite sure why anyone would say something negative about self-promoting. Don’t we all self-promote when we go for a job interview or even just go out and do our jobs on a daily basis? Aren’t we all in the business of trying to get positive attention, (from our bosses or whoever keeps us working) so that we can manage to put food on the table? I read that comment you referred to, and I was completely perplexed. To criticize someone for trying to be a good provider for their family didn’t even make sense to me.

And it’s clear that this is more than just a job for you. It’s also clear that all of us who are readers reap the benefit of you being here blogging every single day. Anyone who criticizes has surely never tried to maintain a never-fail, always-there blog. It’s hard work to be constantly creative and it’s daunting for some of us (me) to even think about having to do something where there are no days off.

To your credit, regarding the hacking, you stayed positive all day and the mood on the blog from visitors was positive. That says a lot about you and about the popularity of this blog.

  7. Sue says:

    Welcome back Suzanne!
You are loved and appreciated, and we missed you. Hugs and blessings coming your way. :snuggle:

  8. Victoria Sturdevant says:

I’m so sorry that happened to you. My software caught it and wouldn’t let me in, but I missed my daily read! So glad you’re back. πŸ™‚

  9. Betty says:

When I tried to get your site this morning and couldn’t I knew they had got you, first thing my sister asked if I had tried to get you, you were missed but we knew you would be back. :snoopy: You have the best site on the net so it was just a matter of time, but you did not need the stress!!

  10. Julie Harward says:

WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE TO SPOIL A GOOD THING?! YOU’D THINK THEY WOULD TAKE THAT TALENT AND APPLY IT TO GOOD THINGS…HOPE IT DOESN’T HAPPEN AGAIN! Come say hi πŸ˜€

  11. Rituparna says:

Hey Suzzanne fortunately I wansn’t amongst the unlucky one’s who did not get to read your blog yesterday.
Welcome back. Your bolg is a total must for me everyday and the fun and happiness that you spread through your words are beyond description.

  12. trish robichaud says:

sounds like someone wants you to look bad to the sam-e judges. any word yet? when will we hear from them? its taking forever. is there cyber police who can find the hacker? i hope they catch the hacker. creeps…. anyway, thank you suzanne for keeping me inspired, giving me a good laugh to start my day, a place where i know if i have a question you will be there to answer. you dont write your post and then leave. no, you stick around and are there for whoever needs you. i , along with most of the gang think you are wonderful.

  13. Kathleen in Michigan says:

So sorry this happened to you. Luckily for me I have just updated my anti-virus software and was not affected.

  14. ChrisUK says:

Very good point about the competition, considering the obvious manipulations concerning voting. Some evil sicko’s derive perverse pleasure from inflicting distress on others.Well in this case you have risen above their ploy, they have FAILED. CITR Goes forward.
    Chris

  15. blossom says:

I kept checking yesterday, very relieved to see you back!

  16. Tracey In Paradise,Pa. says:

  17. julie says:

    Dear Suzanne,
I am terribly sorry this happened but you have handled it in a manner that says only good things about you. You are determined, passionate and generous. There are so many of us that are happy to have you share your life and blessings with us through your blog.
Why, just this past weekend I canned for the first time (cranberry sauce and it is lovely.) Then, I gathered twigs in the woods and made twig stars. They are beautiful and it gave me so much pleasure. I have dried oranges for the tree and made Grandmother Bread and enjoyed many other things that you have shown us. Thanks for the truly ordinary splendor.

  18. Judy@daily yarns says:

I’m glad you’re up and running again and I do put you up there with the Pioneer Woman. Welcome back.

  19. Barbara McDevitt says:

Glad you are back up and running. Compliments like that (like you mentioned) are just not necessary. Everyone needs some CITR with their coffee in the morning.

  20. NorthCountryGirl says:

Suzanne, I’m so glad you’re back online. I got the BLOCKED notice as soon as I logged on. both on Safari and Firefox. My son who majored in computers in college took one look at the notice and said “You only see that for major attacks.” I ran my Malware and Virus scans several times but nothing showed up. Phew! Glad that was taken care of. Makes you wonder, though….. ANYWAY, glad you’re back online. Missed you like mad yesterday. Have a great day!

  21. Johanna says:

What a crummy thing, but how wonderful that in less than 24 hours you’re back with us. Good to see you again!

  22. masonjar says:

I am sorry that this has happen to you might be why I got two trogins yesterday that popped up after visiting the site ……but they were stoped and taken out and shot my McAfee! People that do this hacking are just mean.

  23. Butterbean says:

Yes, people with too much time on their hands should get a farm, then they would not have time for mischief! Glad that it is history now and that you have great tech support!

  24. pam says:

I was blocked because I link to your site on my blogroll.

I have a question – how did you find the code?

  25. anne says:

    SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HAPPY you are back!!
    Some people are just mean!!
Jealous of you or whatever their problem is!

  26. Mary says:

Yesterday I read your blog just fine, and then as soon as I clicked on your daily farm photo a big warning sign came up. I was puzzled, but knew you would be on top of it in a hurry…I am just so sorry you had to go through all that though. You are the Only one I read, so I sure was happy to see you back at it again today. Thank You.

  27. CindyP says:

Yes, it was just horrible on our side, too! It was a little panic attack to get that message……just like when you’re trying to quit smoking…….and just like when I was trying to quit smoking……I went around the block. I couldn’t NOT read your blog and check in with my chicken friends! But all security checks were run and it’s clean. On the ball……what else would the hacker think? You’d sit down and cry because your website was down? No, you’re a girl who lives on a farm with a blog! There’s things to be done!!!! They get done!!

:woof: :cowsleep: :snoopy: :chicken: :sheepjump:

  28. Carmen Smith says:

Some people just have TOO much time on their hands and need to get a life! Glad to see the problem is all fixed and we can all enjoy your wonderful posts again:)

  29. Diane says:

OH well that explains a lot. I did get into your blog eary in the morning. around 6:30 read and enjoyed it. Then I got a virus on my computer. Lucky me I just ordered a new laptop and it came in the mail yesterday afternoon. I have a good bil who will fix my computer for me. I will let him know what happen so he will know what to do. Sorry this happen to you. Some people have way too much time on their hands to think of things like this to do.
Just glad you are up and running today. πŸ™‚

  30. Leah says:

Thanks for telling us to run an updated virus ck…you self server. We know you started this blog and it became your passion, you serve all of us writing everyday and sharing yourself, your farm, your recipes. Someone is watching over you! We  you!!!

  31. Susan says:

Suzanne, Happy to hear website is good as new. Some people are just evil. These are the ones who don’t believe in Karma. Thing about Karma is you don’t have to believe it. It’s like gravity. It just is. Some folks explain it like this, “You reap what you sow.”

I think you are a very wise woman. If the hackers got a farm they could learn all kinds of lessons.

    Blessings to you!

    Susan

  32. Claudia says:

Glad you’re back, :sun: it is pitiful that some people stoop to malicious behavior.

  33. Susan D. says:

I’m glad you’re back up. The person who did it must be so jealous and unhappy. I really feel sorry for people like that.

  34. bethann says:

I called my husband at work as soon as that red angry screen popped up and said What’s going on????? He replied..I don’t know, just get out of there. I whined loudly…But that’s one of my favorite siiiiites…Can you fiiix iiit??? He said..I don’t know! and I was bummed all day!
Glad your crack staff is on the ball! So happy you were back today!

  35. marissa says:

Don’t I wish I could harness the energy some people put into negative acts- think of all the good we could accomplish with it! I worked with a guy who ran himself ragged Avoiding Work, when completing the task would have taken half the effort. Poor dude never sat still! Thank you for taking the trouble to fix your site back up.

  36. Helen says:

I was gone all day yesterday and missed the chaos. I’m so sorry to read about it! You do have a few on-site suspects for something(!), but they don’t look like they’d put out the effort to do whatever a hacker has to do to be a major nuisance. You’re right – the culprit needs a farm to keep them busy!

I wanted to let you know the calendar came yesterday! Your farm kids are beautiful, of course πŸ™‚ Thanks so much to the random drawing chooser thingy!

    Lucy

  37. Sarah says:

SOOOOO glad you are back! Happy to see you and your farm again! πŸ™‚

  38. rebecca says:

Seriously? Why would someone hack your site?!?!?! Like, a pay site to steal people’s financial info makes sense, but a writers’ blog? Duh…

Anyway, I’m glad you got it cleared up.

    People confuse me.

  39. Chic says:

Suzanne I’m sure sorry to hear that you had problems yesterday. I was able to view your sight without any trouble so was surprised to read about this this morning. I really don’t understand people that do things like that…it makes no sense to me at all. I’m glad you’re all fixed up and running without a hitch today…I’d be lost without my daily Chickens In The Road fix!!!

  40. Leisha says:

Suzanne – I am so proud of you!! Nothing but class – good girl they can’t take that away from you!! Makes me think of the expression about a tea bag – people are like tea bags – put them in hot water and what’s inside comes out or something along those lines – a fine brew you are!!
Blessings and thanks for keeping us in the loop!!

  41. Nikki says:

I think the whole hacker thing really is a backhanded compliment. Hackers are doing their best to get the most bang for their buck, and you could only be a target because you have a large and loyal readership. Of course, their mistake was in thinking that because all of us here cherish the simple things in life we’re too stupid, or unsophisticated, to understand how to protect ourselves from the wolves on the internet. I seem to remember the tale of a racoon who looked at a small and broody hen with the same thought.
Yep. You took good care of him too.

  42. JOJO says:

:woof: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman: :snowman:
I am always puzzled why people that have the knowledge tp create sofware that will invade another persons website or use it to cheat in some fashion dont use their talents to do something good–like earn a living for themselves and leave others alone! I guess we have to deal with these “high tech” criminals and thiefs. it is part of our world today.
What sort of twisted mind can get a thrill out of such things?
I am sure they probably go back to read the sights they have invaded to see the problems they have caused for a laugh, I wish there was an avatar to express my feels toward this type of scum, but I think you can guess what it might be.

    JO

  43. Lindy says:

The faithful never leave….”we’ll” just check back….
Unfortunately the hackers hit everywhere….sad…suppose they have nothing better to do ….

  44. Euni Moore says:

I am so glad I woke up at 0 dark early yesterday and was unable to go back to sleep. Was able to read your blog with no problem about 3:30 MST. Someone has waaaaaaaayyyyy to much time on thwir hands and the devil always finds something for you to do. You come first every morning, and would hate to miss you. Blessings on you and all on the farm. Without you our days would be dreary. Merry Christmas. We love you and pray for you daily.

  45. Kim says:

 Because of you, Suzanne, my kids eat homemade bread every day after school. Don’t ever think that your readers don’t love and appreciate what you do.

  46. Angie says:

Geez! Someone out there definitely needs to get a life. I’m so glad you’ve gotten it all worked out. I need my “fix” along with my morning coffee. I know I’d get the shakes without you!

  47. ShadowWoods says:

Suzanne, Gosh, I hope the questions that I posted yesterday aren’t the source of your “self-promotion” comment? That WAS NOT my intention. I was just curious and wondered if the hacker had placed any there that you hadn’t approved. Glad that your site is back up so we can all get our daily dose of cheer and inspiration!

  48. Mary Kellogg says:

This just so ticks me off. This website is one of the best parts of my day, a bright spot in an otherwise glum existence (trying not to sound too down!). But really, it gives pleasure to so many, it makes me wonder what sort of human stain seeks to take happiness away from others. They must be really miserable people (no, not like me).

Suzanne, hang in there, your loyal fans and friends are here for you. Now give that goat her darn tiara. Really, for me….. :snoopy:

  49. Jenny says:

I always wonder why people can’t find constructive things to do with their time. It must take some smarts to figure out the programming required to hack a site, put those talents to good use! I really like that you didn’t resort to slamming the person(s) responsible for this and kept your post so upbeat today. Glad to see things sorted out!
    ~Jenny~

  50. MrsObe says:

I am so glad that you’re back up. You were missed yesterday. If only those who hack would put their powers to better use, maybe we’d have answers/cures to (fill in the blank). That they noticed you to hack into your site code means something; and I know your crack IT team has tightened up your security.

    Have a brilliant day.

    Juliana

  51. Jane says:

It was a pain to not be able to get here yesterday when I wanted to read along with my coffee. We should be grateful to google and firefox that they have the ability to stop us and let us know something is wrong. Everything seems fine this morning. I ran scans with Norton and Malwarebytes and everything seems fine on my computer. This is why I don’t use Internet Explorer, it’s not safe. If you don’t have Firefox, Safari, or Google Chrome download one of them today.

Great blog Suzanne. You so don’t deserve this. It’s a shame there are jealous, vindictive people out there. :purpleflower:

  52. Claudia W says:

As my Grandmother would have said…”If only they could use that energy for good!”

  53. midwestmom says:

    glad you’re back!

  54. Cousin Sheryl says:

    Hi Suzanne,
I stopped at the Library this morning to read your blog. I have to get my daily “CITR fix.”

My mother has a cute saying for folks who cause great havoc and mischief. She says, “The devil is working overtime chopping firewood for some people.!” :devil2:

Much love to you today!

  55. Shirley Wright says:

I would like to say I LOVE THIS BLOG!! And being raised on a mountain farm ,it brings back so many good memories.I look forward to reading it every day. Just keep writing and the people who love you and the blog will keep reading!! God Bless!
    Shirley

  56. Holly says:

I made home made bread yesterday – thanks to your inspiration. It’s amazing what the green monster makes people do. Hope those Sam-E people see that side of the coin.

  57. Jo says:

    :snoopy: :woof: :sheepjump: :sheep:

….in other words, glad you’re back!

  58. Angelia May says:

You make my day every day. I thank you so very much for this site. On days like today (being up all night with 18-month-old twin granddaughters who are getting sick), I look forward to your site.

I will never understand why some people do the things they do. I, for one, always try to look for the good in people and don’t ever really thing that people would do bad and mean things, but they do πŸ™

Thank you again. Even though we do not know each other personally, I like to think that we would be friends and I care about you and your family. I bring you into my house every morning and, again, thank you so very much !

  59. Liz V. says:

Suzanne, as you said in your post above, “It’s my little positive thing to do in the world.” I can’t begin to tell you all the HUGE positives you bring to the world with your site. It has certainly brightened my life, so thank you!

  60. Debnfla3 says:

I agree that it must be someone that has turned very green about this blog! Like I said yesterday…”””may a million fleas infest their armpits”””!! And perhaps other places! LOL

Jealousy sure can have an ugly face.

I’m glad all that is over with! I wonder how someone hacks into anothers system?? What a devious little mind…LOL They just haven’t had any “raising”. That is what my Granny always said when a child was doing mischief and being a brat! And I agree!

    Deb

  61. Mary Lou says:

It never ceases to amaze me that there are such small minded people in the world who have nothing better to do with their time than to try to inflect their misery on others. We are so thankful that it didn’t work this time. Sounds like this “person” is feeling threatened by a little competition or very jealous of you.
Something in their life or mind isn’t right. Let’s pray for her/him and hope that some of the goodness of you blog rubs off on them the way it has on us.

  62. Tovah says:

I too wondered what was going on, I couldn’t access your site yesterday. It’s great that you got it fixed so quickly! You take care and know that you have many faithful readers!:)

  63. Gini says:

So glad you’re online and functional again! I really missed you yesterday, Suzanne!

  64. Valerie says:

I felt so bad for you yesterday, I knew you were going through h**l with what happened to your website. There are just some mean spirited people in this world.

On another note, yesterday I received the “A Very Clover Calendar” I won in your contest. It is a beautiful calendar, I love the photos and captions, and it is made on extremely high quality paper. Thanks again to you and the anonymous donor.

  65. Fannie M Wiggins says:

I got in yesterday but my computer got sick. My anti-virus caught it so that we got well with no problem. I have often wondered why people do the things they do. To have the skills they have and use them for bad things doesn’t speak highly of our world today. The longer I live, the more perplexed I become. I don’t live on a farm but I know the work you do is time-consuming. That you take time to write this blog means a lot to a huge number of people. Thanks for all you do. (I do miss the books though). Have a great day and hugs to all.

  66. Bertie says:

I read your blog EVERY DAY and look forward to your funny stories and beautiful photography. You truly are “The Good Mood Blogger”, It comes out in everything you write. I’m so glad that the site is up and running again. God Bless You Suzanne, and your little blog too!

  67. Kristie Lynn says:

So happy you’re back – will keep visiting as long as I can πŸ™‚

  68. JeannieB says:

I hope that the mean spirited person who messed with you gets what they deserve. May Santa leave them a lump of coal. You are very speical and I want to thank you for sharing your wonderful life with us. I read you every day and have so for about 3 years. Don’t let the *&^&&* people get to you!!!!

  69. Beth Brown says:

Suzanne – So thankful that you are back online. I don’t understand the benefit that someone would get by hacking sites. Just glad that you are back!

    Beth aka oneoldgoat

  70. Melissa Marsh says:

Dear, dear Suzanne, I am so sorry you had to go through this. I will never understand why people in this world can be so incredibly mean-spirited and cruel. But your site is proof that there IS goodness in the world – and that YOU are one of the GOOD people!!! Keep on keepin’ on! Hugs…

  71. Rys says:

Yesterday was the first day I didn’t log on to your Blog since I started reading. Guess I’m glad I missed all the excitement!
    Mean people suck!!!
    Rys

  72. S. says:

…WHY would you even want to hack a blog? What did they even stand to gain from it? That’s just ridiculous. I don’t get it.

  73. Linda in New Mexico says:

As the rest of your adoring fans have stated, we love you Suzanne. That being said, as to the why of mean folks….well karma is a :devil2: and their time will come.

Seems like some people are not happy unless they are spreading unhappiness and distress. But you’re a goodie and your recovery is quite the pay back to the “Grinch”.

  74. Carol says:

Yeah, yeah, glad you’re fixed and all that but what I really want to know:

Is Jack’s nose as soft as it looks?

  75. Mary says:

I was able to read your blog and get the daily farm photo without a problem, thank goodness. You are the highlight of my work morning and I check your blog before any other news on the weekends. I don’t understand whay people are so crappy but you have a solid base of readers and we’re with you 100%. Keep up the good work and the fabulous photos and the funny comments.

  76. Pattie says:

Aaaaaahhh so that’s why I kept getting a warning pop-up every time I tried to visit your site yesterday!Glad things are back to normal. LOVE your site by the way! I don’t usually post but I do visit!

    Pattie

  77. Darlene says:

I was one of the fortunate ones and had no trouble. As you can tell we are all here for the long run, no matter what happens. For me, although missing one day would be hard , I would get double for my trouble the next day. TWO Suzannes instead of one! And if you should be down two days I would get TRIPLE for my trouble. See Suzanne, no matter what you do you are still a winner!!

  78. SuseM says:

 May the plague of a thousand bedbugs find the malicious hacker!

:happyflower: Suzanne, we love you and won’t give up on you or CITR because of someone’s antics. Glad to see everything is up and running again.

    I, too, have been wondering about the Sam-E contest . . .

  79. Donna says:

I too was reading the posts and received a virus which is very nasty (I won’t comment on the distasteful content). It comes up constantly on my computer – I was wondering if anyone knows a way to get it off without a virus remover? We love reading the blog with it’s wonderful pictures and stories!

  80. Gayle says:

    Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, Suzanne.
    πŸ™‚
    Gayle

  81. Nic says:

I stopped by yesterday and got some funky code. I figured it was just a server burp. Good LORD I had no clue. So glad you’re up and running again! I can’t believe people sometimes.

PS You’re one of the four blogs I read regularly (well, daily, in your case) and right up there on my navigation toolbar so I don’t even have to open my favorites folder to get to you πŸ™‚

  82. Motherbugs says:

I’m so glad you got everything fixed & back up & running. Yay!

  83. Debbie in Memphis says:

I hate that someone would do something so mean to you and us, your readers. You’re the first blog I read every day. I’m thrilled everything is better. I pray those folks find a better way to use their skills. And I’ll be grateful every morning that I get to see you use your talent on this lovely blog. Much love to you and yours!

  84. M.J. says:

Like others above, I suspect the hacking is an unanticipated negative outcome of your surge in exposure via the SAM-e competition. In a way, it’s like it is with children, isn’t it–regardless of what you do, you can never protect the thing you love from some of the meanness in the world. Sooner or later, it’s there.

Kudos to your tech support folks, however. (And this is just another reason to love those computers with the fruit logo.)

My calendar arrived yesterday, too–I’m looking forward to seeing Clover every day of 2010. Thanks, Suzanne!

  85. Linda says:

I am sorry this happened to you as well, but very glad you have it all taken care of!

  86. Blessings says:

Well we the followers are here to state You can’t keep a “GREAT Blog and the writer down!” No Grinch for Chickens in the Road! ~~HUGS~~

  87. Jane says:

Donna: There is a great tech site that’s easy to understand for us technically challenged folks. It’s called Cnet.com. They have links to safe downloads for free antivirus and malware/adware removers. I’m posting a link. Look to the right on this page and download one of the top three. You can also download Mcafee or Norton but they aren’t free. Good luck.

  88. Miss Becky says:

WOW. Now I know what was happening yesterday when I received a warning from my security system and the page wouldn’t load. It happened almost immediately after I had written a comment for the daily farm photo and I was not able to complete the task. McAfee wouldn’t even let me see the page. It was blocked, which is a good thing! I am so sorry to learn that this happened to you Suzanne. There isn’t a day that passes that I am not reminded of how I am personally affected by malicious intent of others. So much of my life is routinely impacted because of people who have nothing better to do but cause troubles for others. I need all this security on my computer. I need all of these frigging passwords. I need double locks on my doors. I need security on my car. I can’t open a bottle of aspirin without going through 3 seals because a sick mind laced Tylenol with poison. I can’t think of any day in the past few years that it does not cross my mind how guarded I must be in almost all areas of my life because there are so many who dream of hurt and practice hurt. It makes me ill to think of it. Oh how I wish we would have a world to live in where we were all joyful, content, and loving to each other to do no harm. Want no harm. Plan no harm.
I hope your life will quickly be back to ordinary splendor Suzanne, and that this will never ever happen to you again.

  89. Dessa says:

I am so glad you are back up and running, Suzanne. You know if these darn people would get together and use their free time and know-how for good, just think what the world might be like. I am really sorry this happened to you–shame on them. I know my first thought when I could no access Chickens in the Road was that one of your competitors–or someone connected to them–from the blogging gig competition was trying to mess you up. I am very glad you have such a great bunch of people who could come to your rescue and that one of my favorite blogs is now up and running again. Blessings…

  90. catslady says:

I think I may have been lucky – got on and didn’t have a problem but then I do have Norton. I pay dearly for it and I do know there are people who swear that some of the free sites for anti-virus are just as good but better safe than sorry. I’ve had viruses cost me a pretty penny and had to get a new computer once so in the long run, it’s well worth it. I sure hope it had nothing to do with the recent contest – people can be so mean sometimes (sigh). Glad all is well now!!

  91. Lavon says:

There are stupid people everywhere!!! I don’t understand any kind of vandalism…when you ask someone why they do such stupid things, they always look at you blankly, like you should know!!! Get a life, vandals…read a book or listen to music instead of leaving a mess for someone else to clean up. Sorry this happened to such a sweet person. PS: please change your picture…I love the one you have of yourself taken in the UK. Just suggesting…

  92. Julia says:

Everyone says don’t take it personally, and of course they are right. You shouldn’t take it personally. But I’m sure it FEELS personal. It was your blog. Your readers were the intended victims.

I am outraged on your behalf and so sorry that it happened to you. I am grateful that you moved so quickly and decisively to correct the problem. And I hope when you read all these comments filled with support and love, you will take each of them personally.

    Julia

  93. Barbee' says:

Cheers for your technical support people! Glad you gave them a plug, we appreciate them – and will not forget them. The attack was evil spirited, but one small good thing that came from it all is: it reminded your readers to update our security programs. Another good is that it pulled us even closer together! (I like Mary Lou’s suggestion in comment 63). What a wonderful bunch you are! :happyflower:

  94. LynneW says:

    Suzanne,

So sorry this happened to you, I know firsthand what a major pain it is to fix and how awful it makes one feel to be targeted like this. Good for you that you rose above the meanness, and also that you have wonderful tech support at both your website and host.

Has Clover been a Baaaaaaad Girl, that she’s not getting a tiara? Because if it’s just an issue of finding a tiara, I have one I’d be happy to send you for her. Gold with sparkly jewels in several colors; I think it would look great on her! Please email me if you’d like it ~

  95. Mary says:

Some people are a********. They’ll get theres…we can only hope.
    Love your blog.
    Mary

  96. Nita in SC says:

    I missed you yesterday. I’m glad you’re finally cootie-free!

  97. Ruth - north CA says:

Good grief, think of what all that misplaced creativity could do if it was focused appropriately! The dark mindset of too many folks is impossible to grasp as to the reason behind greedy behavior. The Hippocratic oath of “Do No Harm” should be spread across all of human existence … think before you do or speak. It’s such a simple mantra! An online friend of mine has https://donoharm.us/ , a grassroots movement to spread this idea … no pitch, just a good read.
Suzanne, I’m so glad you’ve come through this rotten assault with humor and grace … and so quickly thanks to your support! What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, so the bad boys lose. Big time.

  98. Karen Anne says:

It happened to the New York Times within the past month or two, so you aren’t alone. I just wish it were easier to find these people and send them to outer space somewhere. A lot of them seem to work from third world countries where the long arm of the law isn’t quite long enough to get them.

  99. Just B says:

    Hi, Suzanne.
I’m sending you a great, big hug this morning. Know you are loved.
Just to help you understand the magnitude of this hug, and to help you understand how important you are, I’m going to be “self-promoting” and tell you a little bit about me.

My job requires me to convincingly act like I know everything. I must be serious all the time, and I have to be very stern and determined, and sometimes even a little bit mean. Your blog keeps me grounded. Can you imagine what my day would be like if I didn’t have something decent and wholesome to smile about? When I go home, my husband says, “What was your day like?” and I say, “One of the ladies on Suzanne’s forum is having a new grandbaby, and the little red hen has eggs of her own!”

I start my work day by scanning through my emails to scare myself over how bad of a day it’s going to be. Then I go get a cup of coffee, open Chickens in the Road, and calm down.

I work internationally, and trust me, there are people all across the globe who have better days because you made me smile. It’s impossible to truly be upset over some meaningless business thing when I have visions of the duck family, fluffy chicken butts or Pocahontas’s inquisitive nose in my head.

I know on the SAM-e site, there was some criticism about you writing a farm blog in a world where not everyone is a farmer. I felt so bad for those people because they were obviously unable to understand that you write about life against the backgrop of your farm. You use the animals to create little vignettes full of depth and meaning.

I wrote my thesis on the psychological importance of the fairy tale. What draws me to you is that you have an instinctive understanding of how to use the deceptive simplicity of the fairy tale to touch us all on a deeply subconscious level and, in so doing, trust me … your meanings are clear and our lives are better.

My second favorite thing about your site is that it is enormously nurturing. In today’s cut-throat world, the single most important thing we are lacking is the nurturing sense of love we used to get from our extended families. Although I am not in favor replacing the physical world with the virtual one, I will say that due to the nature of my job and the fact that my extended family is more myth than reality, I really count on you and your forum to fill a certain void in my life.

Despite the demands of my job, I do not know everything. Your forum is the place I sneak off to when I need to find out all about the things I don’t already know. Why won’t my bread rise? What do I do with vegetable scraps? How many dead animals can I feet in my freezer? To me, these are the mysteries of life.

Thank you for being here, Suzanne. My life is genuinely better because of you.

    -B

  100. Ellen says:

I’m glad you’re back! I don’t think even Mean Rooster would do that. Clover, well, you might want to have a talk with her.

As for the inane comment, of course you are self promoting. That’s what the self employed NEED TO DO to survive. Some people are clueless.

  101. carol bellamy says:

I was lucky enough to get on your site yesterday. As always it gets me motivated. As you know, there are jealous and mean people in the world! I love your site and I will always be here. This just shows you that someone must be intimidated! Keep up the wonderful work!

    Thanks,

  102. Audrey says:

Thanks for doing what you do Suzanne. Try not to get too discouraged. You’re appreciated and that made someone jealous. Keep up the good work!

  103. Tori Lennox says:

Hackers need to be taken out behind the woodshed and horsewhipped!!!

  104. Estella says:

So glad you are back. I was stopped yesterday, but had no problem today.

  105. Jodie says:

I definitely agree with everyone. Your site is worth waiting for. I missed the attack because by the time I read yesterday’s post the problem was solved. Saw the info on Facebook from you about the Hacker attack.

  106. Chris says:

Sorry to hear that – when I was blocked from your sight yesterday I was so missing you… I almost called my husband to see how I could get around it ( he’s in IT). I read your blig every morning. I enjoy everything you write about. Your beautiful family, animals, property…the pride you take in the shelf full of homemade preserves. We have an old family property and I would love to have a ‘Jack’ and a ‘Clover’. Keep doing what you’re doing. If you haven’t heard it lately…. you are amazing.

  107. monica says:

So sorry to hear that your computer was down! Just think of all the time wasted on ruining something that someone has worked to hard to create for other people. Would that be called ‘cite envy’??

  108. mittened paw says:

I found out you had been hacked when I opened your blog and no less than 5 trojan horse warnings popped up from my security software. After I dispatched them, I was able to get in but everything was covered with dots until yesterday. Weird, and I’m so upset that this happened to you, BUT, I think it is because you are such a popular blog and anyone who is popular has some “dark force” that wants to undo them. Keep up the happy thoughts – you’re the BEST blog on the internet!

  109. Emily says:

I’m so sorry you had to go through that. What a feeling of violation. I found your blog via One Pretty Thing and I LOVE it. I’m a fairly new chicken farmer myself (OK, I have 2) and major farmgirl wannabe. I’ll be checking daily. Good luck, I hope this sort of thing doesn’t have to happen again.

  110. Amber says:

It is horrible that someone would do that to such a kind hearted person.

  111. kristin sherrill says:

Suzanne, I’m so sorry you’ve had so much trouble. But if you were’t here yesterday, where did the Surprise Cookie recipe come from that I got from your blog. I thought I found it yesterday. Anyway, now I can’t find it. I just got done making them. They are too good. Where do you find all these great recipes? I hope you have it all worked out now and you don’t have any more problems. I guess I’d just have to throw my computer away if that happened to me. Have a great night!

    kris in Ga.

  112. Marianne says:

I’m one of the folks who got slammed with a trojan horse virus from here yesterday — which was thankfully grabbed by my virus check program, but it was an especially nasty one. I’m sorry it happened to you πŸ™

  113. 5kathleen2 says:

So sorry Suzanne! I can’t understand why anyone would do such a thing! I have an apple computer so I think I am alright. I read your post yesterday with no problems. Can’t remember what time, must have been early. Did your people fix it so it can’t happen again? Lets hope so!

  114. farmershae says:

Suzanne – I just adore you! I stayed up way past my bedtime and read yesterday’s post when it first came out, so I missed the whole hacking situation. Even though I know it was a traumatic event for you, the way you told the story of the hacking, trying to pin it on the likely barnyard culprits…. You had me in stitches. Thank you for having such a humorous outlook on the most irritating situation!!!!

  115. Cynthia says:

    MEAN PEOPLE SUCK! :hissyfit:

YOU, ON THE OTHER HAND, ROCK! :shimmy:

  116. Taryn says:

Suzanne, I think Myrna MacKenzie really said it best, that we all self-promote. This is your job. Why is that a problem? The sad thing is, out of all the glowing compliments you get, that one comment is going to eat at you and make you sad. Don’t let it.

I don’t read ANY blog because I am too stinking busy, yet I try to make it a point to drop by every other day and catch up on what I missed in yours. Your recipes and advice are freely given, people chat here, and yes, you mention your books and ask people to buy them. Isn’t that what every author does? In every venue they can? Do they advertise? Do they do book signings? Those are ways to promote their books. This is your much more homey way to do it.

Don’t be sad – you go, girl!

  117. LisaAJB says:

Ugh! Once again, sorry that this happened to you. Thanks for being so dedicated to writing every day. You do brighten my day. Keep up the good work, and feel better.

  118. Jo says:

Oh my…what JustB said in post 103 made me all misty.

  119. Christine says:

I Read Your Blog Daily. You Are Down To Earth And Real. Thanks For Sharing Your Life With Us.

  120. Valeria in NC says:

Some people can be really dumb. Isn’t it sad? And they probably think they’re SOOO smart hacking your site. Kind of like the middle school bully touching all the food on your tray. Dumb and pointless.

I LOVE your site and I’m glad it is back. Tomorrow we’re getting snow, so I think I’ll make Grandma Bread cinnamon rolls. πŸ™‚

  121. cranberry says:

Some people just like to cause consternation and problems for other people. This time of year they can’t even have Goodwill for others, pretty darn sick. So sorry, Suzanne, you are doing such a sweet thing for all of us and someone abuses your gift. :hissyfit:

  122. Cheryl says:

I have read all the comments and I don’t think there is anything left to say! Except….I’m glad you are back, too!!!

  123. Amber lynn says:

Ohhhh….I am so sorry!! I got a trojan horse once that sent Porn to innocent people through my personal e-mail!!! So, I know how vulnerable you feel…

We your readers love and support you!! You just keep promoting yourself, we love it!!!

  124. Hannah says:

πŸ˜₯ Odd… Am I the only one who didn’t get the warning? I did manage to come along up here late at night after it was cleared I guess. Stupid people. They SHOULD take up farming. πŸ˜† :cowsleep:
By the way, are you SURE it wasn’t the ghost of Mean Rooster???

  125. kristin sherrill says:

This morning I had a warning on my computer screen from my AVG anti virus protection. Weird! It can’t be healed (?) so it’s in quarentine somewhere in la la land. It said something about Trojan. I wonder how that happened? It’s too scary for me. I know nothing about all this. I am glad I have protection, though.

Suzanne, yes, the cookies are too good! I made one batch. I’ll have to make more later. My grand, Kansas, helped. She rolled out the balls and stuck the chips in then rolled some more. Too cute! She’s a great helper.

I hope all is well for you today.

    Kris

  126. CityGirl says:

    jealous people SUCK! :grinch:

And I doubt the perp was the actual hacker. They probably paid someone, because if they had the skill and intelligence to do a major hack job like this one, they probably have enough income to not give a damn about Suzanne’s blog.

  127. WolfWalker says:

Again so sorry you were hacked yesterday. In a way you should take it as a compliment, hackers like that look for blogs or websites that have either a large following or a loyal one, or both. They want to hit as many computers as they can before they are found out and the site fixed. I know that that is no consolation, but you do have loyal fans that no matter what we are going to stand by you. To me personally you are the first place i go, I never leave your site without my spirits being lifted or without having learned something. For a country girl that is stuck in the city, your blog is like getting a letter from home everyday. As for being a self promoter, pffffffft everyone worth their salt is a self promoter. Keep up the good work Suzanne, and fingers and toes still crossed that you get the gig :).

  128. Twigs says:

Yep, my computer was trashed from the malicious attack on your site. Lesson learned, I will only use Firefox from now on. Microsoft knows where the faulty problem is but hasn’t fixed it. Plain and simple, they are assholes.

  129. Melinda says:

I probably should find a better word than the one I am about to use but…having gone back and read your post and saw the words “self promoting” I just have to say it…

SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST ASSES! (No reflection on Jack)

You are a very intelligent, smart, funny and kind human being to put all of the hours into this blog that you do and if it seems a little self promoting to someone, well, tough. The rest of us, who are here for the RIGHT reasons, love what you do and that’s why we are here. Those who want to be stone-tossers and negative nellies need to go find a hobby. Perhaps they could use their time solving the evils of the world and leave poor little farm girls trying to make a living and a difference in the world the HECK along.

As for the hacker, you are obviously good…..go find a real job where your talents can be put to good use. You know…like a real grown up…something productive.

Ok, packing up my soapbox once again til the next time someone decides to be an idiot

  130. Melinda says:

ooo…just noticed Twigs had the same knee jerk reaction I did. lol

  131. Arlene says:

So sorry about your blog getting hacked! I am now running a full system scan just in case. Actually I have not had problems getting into your blog. And I love reading it everyday like others have said. As a person that is also self employed and has a job that pays me I depend on the internet for sale. I only hope my web teamm is as good and as fast as yours if anything happens to me!!! Again I am sorry!

  132. Anne says:

Computer hackers, road ragers, etc make me glad that I live in the woods with my beloved dogs, cats, chickens, goats and alpacas! Lots of work to do here, but I just feel so close to God here. Your blog is the BEST and I’m trying all kinds of new recipes, learning new things and having a grand time thanks to CITR. Thanks Suzanne!!

  133. Micah says:

AVG is a free anti-virus program that runs really well. It comes highly recomended by my old college roommate who happens to work in computer security. Did I also mention it’s FREE!?

  134. Julieanna says:

Sorry to read about your hacker. I missed all of it due to work, a snowstorm and no electricity. I have to agree with Jo (post 123) and JustB.(post 103)who really did bring a tear to my eye. Just keep doing what you are doing, we love you just the way you are  Now that I have electricity (for now) I’m going to make some Grandmother Bread and Drunken Rum Cookie Logs. (After I test the rum, according to the directions). And THANK YOU!!! I also received my calendar!!!

  135. Drunkbunny says:

I tried to bypass the google warning because I thought it was just firing due to some advertising code you may have placed on the site. Thanks for the update! I’m sorry this happened to you – I had a blog for almost a year then one day I woke up and it was gone. I had prepaid my host for two years. She shut down my site, never answered my emails about it, and never gave me a refund. I’ll never get over that one, that’s for sure! Glad you have a host you can trust.

  136. Darlyn says:

    Suzanne,
Apparently my security software was not good enough, and I GOT that stinkin’ virus, and BOY oh BOY was it a dooozy. Thank goodness that my FIL is a computer wizard and was able to get it off for us (Microsoft wanted to change me $250 to do it). I have to admit, I was VERY cautious about coming here again, but I had to come back. Sorry about the contest! I was hoping you would win. Glad to see things are back to normal around here.

  137. The Retired One says:

How awful! What do they get out of hacking your site, anyway??? Do they get account numbers, or what? I am so green to all of this, it makes no sense to me. I just know there are dishonest people everywhere and blogs are going to be vulnerable, unfortunately. It is so fortunate that you have technical help and monitors for this type of thing!
