A Berry Good Discovery

When the house was built, this entire area along the hillside behind the house (and extending outward on either side) was disturbed due to all the various digging around and moving dirt. The hillside has been growing back ever since, and while I looked desperately and without success for a blackberry patch on our farm back in those days….

…. we believe now that what we have here is–

–a big ol’ honkin’ patch of ’em!!!!!!!!!

Yep, looks like it to me.
Note to self: Do NOT let the goats “mow” the area for you. They eat all the leaves AND LEAVE THE THORNY STEMS!! And then you don’t see them and walk into them.

    Owwww!

  2. Granny Trace says:

:snoopy: GREAT!! I planted blackberry bushes last year too. They did good also.

Better brush up on how to prevent chigger bites!

  4. JerseyMom says:

Amen, Miss Judy! Worst case of chiggers I EVER had was gotten in a wild blackberry patch. The berries were awesome but really not worth the itchiness!!! Hopefully forewarned is forearmed! This looks like a good page to peruse from the Missouri state government. I’ve had a chigger or two in that fair state so I know they know what they are talking about 😉 https://mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/avoid-outdoor-pests/chiggers

Yeah!!!! Jelly and pies and sauce, oh my.

YUMM, Yumm, berries. Do you guys have a lot of trouble with snakes? That was always what we had to look for when we picked berries when I was a kid. Funny how the sweetest, ripest berries grew just beyond your arm’s reach. I think berries are the most miraculous things there are. Start out with just a few like you have growing now and by next year the whole hill will be thick with them. The bestest thing in the world is opening up a jar of berry jam in Feb. when you’ve just about forgotten that summer exists. Then smear a big spoonful on some warm bread and the first reminds you that God created winter so we’d appreciate summer more and berry jam was his promise that summer was coming.

Blackberries are at the very top of my “things I miss” list since moving overseas. How I wish I had blackberry vines in my garden. For me, it isn’t just the taste (although they are delicious!) it’s a fond memory of everything my grandmother was. We picked them together and then she would make the most amazing cobbler. I have nothing but fond memories of this lovely and gentle woman, picking berries with her was a delight.

  8. Merino Mama says:

Yea! We have blackberries on top of the mountain, but we have to get there before the black bears. They’ll wallow them down. What I really like is wild raspberries. Got two patches of them, one right by our gate, so you can always grab a little snack on the way in or out. :eating:

  9. Glenie says:

It is great to have blackberries just for the picking. I made 7 quarts jars of blackberry pie filling just last week. The blackberries are mostly gone already here in Florida but blueberry season is on the way.

  10. Barbee says:

Lucky you! My mother made the most wonderful blackberry something (I don’t know what it would be called.) that was of a slightly runny consistency and we put it on vanilla ice cream. Oh, that was wonderful! I think she canned it.

LOL…I’ve been pulling them out by the trailer load from my flower beds…..

Good for you, when (if) I get to come this summer, I’ll bring you some thornless blackberry vines.
