The mountain dulcimer is an Appalachian tradition in old-time folk music. One of our Thanksgiving guests brought one and played for us!

    Suzanne,
    Now you’re talkin’!

Is this goin’ to be a Dare Debbie? To learn to play the instrument?

When we travel thru the high mountains, we play a traditional music CD..The beauty of the mountains and the music combined takes you into another time…Reminds us of how much our forefathers learned and gave and passed on to us…Less not forget them…and keep alive the traditional dialect, music, home and family preservation….

That looks like a beautiful dulcimer. I have two and my best friend has one that we got on a trip to Kentucy. We “diddle” on it sometimes although I have not seriously learned how to play it. I absolutely love the simplicity of this instrament!
    Have a wonderful weekend!

They are not hard to play if you can count to ten you can play, the from there you can learn chords or learn to play as the woman in the photo with a noter. But it does become a bit more involed as you learn to play but it is not hard

Hey, I´m from Argentina, I’ve never even heard of a dulcimer, let alone hear one. How about a little video of someone playing it. Please?? It sure seems to be loved, it must sound beautiful!

  15. Nancy in Iowa says:

That’s one of my dreams – to learn to play a dulcimer! Such beautiful music, and so very mobile!!!

  16. Euni Moore says:

That sounds like an absolutely great way to have music at home. Dulcimers have a unique sound that is not heard with any other instrument. When my uncle was pastor of a Quaker church in the Smokies years ago they had a group of players in the church. Beautiful. I agree that it would be nice to see/hear a video of someone playing the dulcimer.

  17. Barbee' says:

Now that is what I call “really special”!

  18. BuckeyeGirl says:

I’ve only ever seen hammered dulcimers played. I’ve heard mountain dulcimer music before but I’ll look forward to seeing someone actually playing one. Thank you Suzanne!

  19. Wammy says:
