A Strange Love

I’ve never had a cat and dog that were friends. I’ve had cats that would tolerate dogs. But friends? Aside from being the door-opening cat, Spice is one of those unusual cats who isn’t afraid of dogs or even particularly bothered by them. Except for their general nasty dogginess. After all, cats are quite finicky. But even so. She puts up with dogs. She will hang out on the front porch with them rather than sticking to the back porch aka cat porch. (I keep the gate shut on the back porch so the dogs can’t get in there. This allows the cats to have their own private hangout.)

But recently–

–there’s been a really strange amount of nuzzling.

On her part!

Casper is difficult to ignore, of course. He seeks her out and chews her on her like she’s a stick he dragged out of the woods. She tolerated him, but I was surprised to see her actually begin seeking out this demon pest on her own.

This photo is blurry, but it shows how she is the one initiating the contact.

So strange!

I hope she’s okay when the other cats find out. They might kick her out of the cat club!

I thought I was the only one who had a cat like that!!! I have my cat we rescued from outside as a kitten and my german shepard/collie mix grooms him every day! He has no fur on his back from Jake’s licking him. He’ll chew on him too. If Jake doesn’t do it, Stealer follows him around and pushes on him until he starts. Glad to know I’m not the only one with strange animals!!!

awwwwwww Spice is a sweetheart!

  3. Whaledancer says:

Our old lady cat and our German shorthair pointer were best friends, although she had beaten up most of the dogs in the neighborhood. He even took over the care of her kittens when she wanted no part of them.

  4. Carrie Johnston says:

She knows he’s sad because Boomer is gone.

  5. Su says:

I have 4 cats, and a dog. Two of the cats just can’t get enough of my dog! THey’re always rubbing, or napping on him. The dog is a love, and he licks then ,and snuggles when they want for a while.

  6. Donna Mc says:

One of our cats use to do this…especially when she was in heat. Poor thing was confined to the house and the dog was her only chance for umm,…’entertainment’. hahaha! No, we didn’t have any inter-species hankypanky…just good friends.

wow Thats so strange Casper looks exactly like the Dog I had Rusty he was very protective of me.
Spice is a twin lookalike for my Cat Dixie Bless her she is no longer with us the marking on spice is the same…
I think it’s wonderful that they get along so well Spice is a flirt.

We have one of those, too. It is so funny to watch. She is the only one the dog will let in his food dish. If he wants the food, he just sticks his paw in and whips the bowl out from underneathe her.

  9. jan~n~tn says:

I agree with Carrie—Casper, secretly asked Spice if she would play with him, because Boomer isn’t around. And how sweet it is that she wants to help fill a void!

  10. Merlin says:

That is just too funny! I used to have a dog and a cat who enjoyed each other’s company. They both are females, and the female dog would chase any male cats out of our yard. When the cat finally had a litter, the poor dog wanted to play with the kittens but didn’t understand they were too small to play, and soon only one kitten was alive. We had to keep him protected until he was old enough to be around the dog without getting hurt by her. These pets were a funny sight!

How is Coco..is she home from the vet and doing OK?

  12. Nancy Stickler says:

My Lab, Bodie, and my male cat,Zeus, have a weird relationship as well. They play like they are both the same species! The cat is the boss though…when he gets tired, game over or Bodie risks a severe bite!

  13. Cheryl LeMay says:

Cats are very sensitive animals. I agree with the others who posted it – that she knew Casper was missing Boomer and was trying to help comfort him.

  14. Urbanite says:

Spice is such a beautiful cat. Her coat is so glossy and she looks so cute with Casper. I, too, once had a cat like Spice. She and my brother’s Irish setter adored one another. They slept together in the dog house and hung around together all day. When my brother left home with his dog, the cat howled for several days. Whenever he would visit with the dog, the cat yowled for hours after they left. My mother finally said the dog couldn’t come visit any more because it was too hard on the cat. After the last visit, the cat adjusted and never seemed to miss her friend again. I think what helped the relationship along is that Irish setters are protective dogs and my cat met him when she was a kitten and not afraid of anything yet.

Too funny! I have a black & white cat that acts just like that with our golden retriever. The dog tolerates it because he got scolded for growling at a cat when he was a puppy. (8 years ago.) Had we known he would take it so to heart, we would have let him voice his opinion to the cats. But now he feels he has to let them walk all over him, sometimes literally. And the black & white one is the worst.

  16. MaryB says:

This needs to be on the news. It would touch everyone’s heart, and everyone could use a sweet bit of news.

  17. Lindsay says:

So sweet! The nicest my cats ever were to my dog was restraining themselves from giving her a beatdown when she would lick them and snot all over them. Most of the time they gave her a look like she was something nasty on the bottom of a shoe, poor girl. Maybe our next dog will make friends with the kitties. I hope Casper and Spice enjoy the lovins while they’ve got them!

  18. Linda Goble says:

It is so sweet!!!!!!!! I two had a cat an dog Golden retriever mix.
The cat would lay next to the dog and the dog would clean her ears. Also one time when my dog took off I watch her come up the driveway and the cat ran right up after her and kept swatting her hind end like she was punishing him. It was so funny. They are both gone now.
I have another cat an dog and they tolerate each other. If another cat comes around the dog will certainly chase it away. :snoopy:

  19. Karen Anne says:

Teri, Your kitty doesn’t have a skin problem that needs attention, does she?

  20. Teri says:

For Karen – no he doesn’t! We’ve checked him over and we think it’s just habit for him and Jake. He could fit in the palm of your hand when we found him outside during a blizzard. Jake just took over being the daddy to him. They’re buddies! lol!

  21. DancesInGarden says:

It’s a trick. She’s trying to get another dog to follow her to certain demise. Get a strong light, put her under it, and make her tell you what the cats did with Boomer. Cats are diabolical, I tell you! :devil2:

  22. holstein woman says:

So let them, everyone needs love.

  23. Joy (from Illinois) says:

I think its a plot to get the dog’s blanket. My cat will stop at NOTHING to grab a comfy spot.

  24. Darlene in North GA says:

We had a cat (stray, dumped out at our house)and then my daughter moved home with her baby Chihuahua. And before we could afford to get both of them spayed, we DID have inter-species hanky-panky! To this day the dog loves cats. He can even MEOW! Of course, most cats don’t care much for him. lol

  25. Zusiqu says:

I also have a cat who loves his dog and the dog loves him back. It’s unexpected, but sweet!

  26. Cindy Thrasher says:

Lol… Our Siamese mix used to hold down and clean our Shichon when he was a pup… And our English Stafford seeks the cat out for a head and ear bath… Of course she accommodates the dog. She was a young pound rescue that we chose because we have dogs and she was at the front of the cage totally comfortable to ask for loves with dogs barking all around so we felt she would fit right into our family.
