Chicken Hooves

We trim our chickens’ hooves every six to eight weeks, about the same schedule as for the donkeys and the goats. It’s not easy doing the chickens. We get a bunch of cracked corn and line them up. The roosters are especially difficult. We can usually get the hens to cooperate pretty well.

I’M MAKING THIS UP.

I love search engine terms for how people come to my site. “Do chickens have hooves?” was a recent one.

I’m still scratching my head……

i might be a city girl but even I know that chickens don’t have hooves! sheesh.

  2. hershiesgirl says:

That whole search engine thing would probably make for a great story somehow….

  3. Cheryl LeMay says:

Your old roosters may need their spurs cut though.Sometimes they will curve and get hooked on things.I had a rooster die from this-he got hooked and flipped on his back and couldn’t get loose.Birds don’t breathe well on their backs(a very unnatural position) and he died.

Now that “shore” is purty funny!!!! 😆 :chicken:

  5. Carolrae says:

 WOW!! Really?? Uh have they not ever heard of chicken feet? Chicken claws? Being flogged by a rooster? Now I want to do the chicken dance. :dancingmonster: Oh my, I am so glad you are here to educate others. :woof: I love your site!!

  6. Jessica says:

I was starting to wonder if you were losing your mind! until I read you were kidding. :bugeyed:

  7. MMHONEY says:

I would not touch this one with a ten foot pole. Please don’t go there!!!!!!!

  8. mintamichelle says:

You had me hook, line and sinker….I was sitting here thinking. YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!!! But I am a newbie with chickens…..so, you can pull my leg…tsk tsk woman

  9. texwisgirl says:

Wow! I’d hate to “foot” that farrier bill! Ha Ha!

  10. CindyP says:

Bahahaha! I was wondering what in the heck you were doing now!

  11. whaledancer says:

I knew it had to be a put-on: you don’t trim your chickens’ hooves, you give them tiny little pedicures…

  12. Pete says:

Picking the color for the nail polish really is the most difficult part of the rooster pedicure. Do you try to match the tail feathers or the breast feathers, or go for a contrasting color…

  13. Heather says:

HA! You had me worried that I was supposed to be clipping nails out in the coop. OH my that would be an interesting sight. Especially with Bogart. I am not even sure I could catch that guy. Too funny that someone would say a chicken has hooves!

  14. Bev says:

I was reading this and thinking “Man, that girl has a lot to learn” someone has been funnin’ her for sure…

  15. Sharlene says:

Wow, and for a minute I thought I should be trimming my chicken’s hooves! Boy am I relieved.

  16. Sue says:

There’s a line in Napoleon Dynamite where Napoleon says, “Do chickens have talons?” Maybe it’s kinda like that…only different.

  17. lizzie says:

You had me going for a second! silly me, :woof:

  18. Karen says:

LOL very funny! Had me thinking for a short second there that you really believed chickens have hooves!

  19. Karen Anne says:

Cheryl LeMay, I am sorry about your rooster.

  20. glenda says:

I was about ready to email you and tell you not to trim chickens ‘hooves’ because they needed them to scratch for food….

I wonder about that question too.

  21. Jeanne says:

    You are good! haha

  22. Diane says:

I was wondering what chicken hooves were!!! lol. Who would think of that??

  23. wkf says:

    Don’t poke fun!!

  24. susan says:

    :chicken: Still laughing.

  25. Ramona says:

I’m glad I don’t have to hire the chicken farrier to come over. The horse farrier is expensive enough!

  26. Saska says:

I clicked on this story ’cause I wanted to see PICTURES! :chicken: I thought this woman has LOST IT!

  27. farmershae says:

I love some of the questions I get from non-farm folks (which is 90% of the people I deal with right now.) My favorite so far was about chicken parts
. “if we get chicken breast from chickens, what do we get from roosters?” you know, because boys don’t have breasts
. LOL! (But I love that she was curious enough to ask, and hopefully I explained it kindly enough!!)

  28. Barbee' says:

Okay, you all got me started with a BIG smile. Reminds me of when I was a small child my grandfather told me he’d give me a nickle for every chicken tooth I found in the chicken yard where they had lots of chickens. 70 years ago a nickle was a lot of money for a child. (It would buy one ride on the large, beautiful carousel at the state fair!) I looked for a little while, but my grandmother clued me in to the truth. It got my attention, though, and gave me something to think about, some serious thinking related to chickens and what they were really like. An gave me insight to my grandfather… he had a sense of humor and I liked being the target of his attention. HA! chicken teeth, chicken hooves, chickens are funny though! :chicken: :chicken: :chicken: :chicken:

  29. Stephanie in Seattle says:

Hahaha. And here I thought I was going to learn something new, something I had never heard of before. I have to say that it did seem odd that you were calling them hooves.

  30. zteagirl71 says:

Chicken hooves indeed! I loved Barbee’s story. The next thing we know, you’ll be writing a harrowing tale about how you had to take the hens to the dentist to have their teeth cleaned, right? 😆
