Chickens and Cows

I love chickens and cows together. It was bugging me, having Beulah Petunia so far from the chickens. Chickens and cows look good together. Very barnyard-ish. They were meant to be together! Chickens love cow poop, by the way. There’s a lot of corn in cow poop. They also love cow food. They jump in Beulah Petunia’s big food box at her milk stand and eat alongside her. A hen is about the size of BP’s head. I hope she doesn’t accidentally eat one of them.

For the most part, Beulah Petunia ignores the chickens. They are way too far beneath her. Glory Bee loves them, though! When you’re a baby cow, you always have a playmate if you have chickens. She frolics and they run. She thinks they’re playing. Then Glory Bee gets tired and sits down to take a nap outside the chicken house and BP gets mad because she’s outside of her electric fence and she moos and moos and moos.

I love having my cow near the house where I can hear her moo all the time.

I love my cow.

It’s not just the corn in the poo that they like. They LOVE the maggots and worms that go to work breaking down the poo. When chickens “process” cow poo the way they do, bacteria and mud problems are greatly decreased and soil fertility is greatly increased. Yay for cows and chickens!

Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate CITR Suzanne! So many, many times I have a smile on my face when I read your written wit. Thank you very much for the time you give to enlighten and entertain myself and others

Well Kat,I’ve learned something new…again…from CITR!

Suzanne, I can’t seem to get that visual out of my mind…Chickens pecking in big ol’ cow patty.

I have loved cows for years and chickens too. The picture is so mellow.

I’m glad you love your cow, Suzanne, but I fear for Clover. Has she lost that special place in your heart? Supplanted by a COW? So embarrassing for her.

By the way, this talk of cow poo disturbs me.

  8. Cousin Sheryl says:

Yes, Kat. That is TMI for me. I will never look at a carton of eggs from Suzanne’s the same way. 😮

  9. Helen says:

And can you imagine how BP must love you back, Suzanne? Your rescued her and have her a wonderful home, and even better…you let her keep her baby!

Chickens and cows… how udderly bucolic. But I too wonder if all this cow love will drive Clover to the therapist’s couch. She doesn’t seem to be one to share the spotlight.

  12. Marilyn says:

Yes, little cows need chickens. It is the same way with my goat kids and lambs. It gives them something smaller than themselves to tease. I love to watch them together.
As for the chicken/poo issue. Works the same with the burro’s droppings. Cuts down on the flies that is for sure.

  13. Valerie says:

I love reading about how much you love your cow. Very warm and sweet. As for Queen Clover, well, I think BP can hold her own.

Your BP and GB stories have convinced me that we will have to have a milk cow on the farm too. I can’t wait 😀
