Digging Out

This is how far I got trying to get out of my driveway yesterday. I shoveled out the snow behind my car, cleaned my car off (mostly), and tried to back in toward the house so I could go down the driveway forward. (Going directly down backward seemed a little scary with snow on it.) I made it this far and got stuck. I’ll try again today!

I got help on Friday evening and got my gas back on. There is a pin in the well house that needs pulled if it freezes. I know how to do that now. I didn’t lose power, by the way. (There seemed to be some confusion about that in the comments on the previous post.) I haven’t had a power failure all winter, and if I do, I have a generator and stock of gas cans filled with gas just waiting for it.

So far, the worst thing that has actually happened is losing the hot water in the house. I still have cold water running in the house, and I have both hot and cold water running in the studio. I’ve been running water for over a week, non-stop, and running space heaters at the pipes. When the gas went off on Friday, THAT could have been the worst thing to happen because without the heat that gas adds to the studio and house, I would have had a hard time keeping the pipes warm. Running water does freeze–I’ve often had people ask if a pipe freezes, WEREN’T YOU RUNNING WATER? Check out photos of Niagra Falls. Moving water can freeze! This is why I’ve been using space heaters on the pipes also PLUS the gas heat boost. I also have a wood stove and a huge supply of wood.

Right now, all is well. I have power and water (except for the hot in the house) and gas. I have food and hay for the animals, and plenty of food for me. I’m DYING to get off the farm for a bit. I’m starting to have cabin fever and am feeling a little isolated. I haven’t been out of here in over a week. Better weather is coming and March is around the corner!

I want to mow. Seriously.

We’re staying home today. Jeep Wrangle just went buy and it was creeping on the straight stretch! We’ve had some pipes freeze (water running!) and others not. Thankfully we’ve had hot water somewhere in the house. Coldest of days, the propane tank/regulator froze so Mike was without heat until he could get it thawed. It’s been a long week. Looks like we’ll be warmer today and then into the negatives again on Monday night. Hope you get thawed before then!

I know how you feel, I went out and talked to my tractor last week and told her(she is a Johnna Deere) that we would be togerther again soon, I think she smiled! I have not been away from the house for over 3 weeks, not that I ever get bored, as long as I can cook and bake, but it would be nice to know that I could get out and drive, the roads are fairly well cleared here, but I dont take a chance, parking lots, trying to walk on them is my biggest fear, I am so afraid of falling.
I am happy that you gas is back, I think there is some sort of wrap that you can use on you pipes, that is warmed by electricity, It may help with your pipes so you dont have to run the heaters so much of the time.
    Take care and be safe.
