Emergency Move

May

After a few weeks of nonstop rain, we had a few weeks of nonstop dry. The small creek on my farm starting running low. Last night, we moved the horses and donkeys down off the pasture into the back barn yard and ran a bucket of water to the sheep in their field. (The goats don’t have a creek in their field, so they have a bucket of water all the time anyway.)

Patriot and Zip hiding out from the sun earlier today in the outdoor access stall:

I could run a bucket to the upper pasture, also, and will probably do that for longer term droughts, but I knew it was supposed to rain this week, so I just brought them down for the day. They can go back up in the morning. It’s raining now!

The cows have two creeks joining in their field, so they are better off for water where they are. It would have to be dryer longer before I’d have to bring them to the barn.

I want to start loading in this winter’s hay this weekend and my hay guy hasn’t finished baling, so if it doesn’t dry up soon, my Saturday hay day will be shot. (And I have all the teenagers lined up already and everything!)

But the flowers I planted this weekend will be happy and the creeks will fill again!

We did some baling off of a couple fields this weekend, almost a month ahead of our normal hay season. The rest of the fields are going to have to wait until next week because of the rain. The early season left the growth kind of thin. Hopefully it will be a good summer, not too hot, not too wet, and we can get a second cutting off of these two fields.

Living here in Phoenix with the predominant colors being beige and gray (and a little anemic green thrown in!), I am so envious of all your green things!!! How beautiful your spring is. Rain? Not sure I know what that is…

Does “run a bucket” mean carry a bucket of water up to them? If not, what does it mean, please?

It means run a hose to a bucket! I can run the hose all the way to a bucket just over the fence in the sheep field. I’m not sure the hose will go all the way to the fence line in the upper pasture. I haven’t tried that yet. I may have to carry water there.

I love your flowers – the containers you chose really add interest.

I hope your creeks filled better than ours did. Everything is still very dry here in the eastern part of the county.

Our hay has come in a couple of weeks early and my farrie, who is also my hay farmer, delivered 100 bales last weekend. Woohoo! I can’t store much more than that at a time because my barn isn’t as big as yours, but I’m happy having the summer’s hay in place. I’ve been promised another 100 bales from the last cut of the season so all is well despite limited storage. Hay security is a big deal, isn’t it?
