I ordered a grape plant because a Master Gardener I knew said she has them as ‘sacrifice vines’. I forget what insect it is they attract, but she said they’d leave the garden veggies alone if there were grape vines nearby. So may be all is not lost?

Are those grapes or muscadines? They look like muscadines if they’re not. I had LOTS this year. I made muscadine sauce and muscadine jelly along the way I was eating all I could too. Your harvest will grow every year… until you have so many you are giving them away!

Those look like muscadines. Ours have been gone for a while. I expect there were lots more and something has eaten the rest. Try again…they are not hard to grow and get a crop but you may have to do some barrier to keep varmints off them. Oh and by the way..

I was reading another blog last week (she’s a viticulturist), and she suggested roasting them! I haven’t decided if that idea is appealing or off-putting. lol

I also believe those are muscadines. They will take a few years to get going, but when they do, you should have lots. They are good for jam, jelly, juice and wine. You do need to make sure that you have more than one variety planted, and that at least one or two are a self-fertile variety. If you’re not sure, it wouldn’t hurt to plant one of these. Ison’s Nursery is one mail-order company that specializes in muscadines and scuppernongs, and I’ve had good luck with their plants.
