A Hunter’s Snow

Happy Thanksgiving! This is how I’ve been dressed much of the week:

We’ve got snow since yesterday, which my neighbor Jim says makes for his favorite time to hunt because it’s easier to see in the woods. I’m not sure if even snow will help me, but I did get a chance to take a shot last night at a doe. I missed. But I was so excited, I didn’t really care! At least I got to try!

This morning, I walked right up on a buck. It was a baby shot. I coulda been a contender. He wasn’t 50 yards from me and he stood still while I scoped him. I pulled the trigger–and nothing happened. Took me several seconds to realize that I had left the safety on. I am such a moron! Of course, then he was gone, and it turned out to be my only chance this morning. I will keep trying–the fact that I’ve seen deer and had a chance at a shot two days in a row is encouraging.

But for now, I’d better get to work on turkey and dressing! People around here look hungry. And expectant. I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day with your friends and family. I am thankful for many things, but always I am thankful for you. Thank you for being here.

    HAPPY THANSGIVING,
Turkey is in the oven, pies are baked, stuffing is made side dishes are ready a lot to be thankful for. My sweet Husband was up early this morning, made coffee and breakfast for our “baby” so I slept in until 6:30, which is late for me.
We are having a beautiful white Thanksgiving this year, we are both fairly healthy and our little one is doing better, so we are very thankful on this day.
Later this evening we will be joining a few friends for coffee and deserts, a few others that dont have family to share their holiday with, a nice way to end the day.

    Dear Suzanne,
Just had eggs and “Grandmother bread” toast! My husband was home yesterday and he is the bread maker so he made it for me. I really wanted to do it but next time I will. We put in 1/4 of a cup of wheat flour. He also used. Read flour. I want to try it your way. Very Good bread! It thrills me that you offered this to us.

I am reading your book, 3/4 of the way through. You are a very good writer! I am grateful that your wrote it and that I can get a glimpse of your thoughts and feelings through it. You are a.brave woman and role model just by being yourself. I am one of your fans in the stands. I read you everyday, I cry and laugh, I learn and muse and admire all the things that you share. And the animals, a huge heart spot for me. I can’t help loving them.

People see me as a city girl, which is somewhat true, but I have a country heart. I love being away from the “cement” city as I call it. I love nature and all that goes with it. You provide a sanctuary for me to go to each day to live that out in the country dream.

I am so grateful for your offering of “Chickens in the Road”. Have a good thanksgiving with your family..
    All the best,
Joy from Michigan. It is snowing here. Perfect blessing on the day!

Okay, here’s a something that I’ve asked a couple of guys recently and no one had an answer: I understand the reason for wearing an orange vest while hunting – so other hunters can see you. So what’s the point of wearing camouflage as well? Can’t you just wear a bright orange outfit??

  12. ncastlen says:

“…here’s something that…” Not “…a something”. Need an emoticon for slapping myself upside the head.
