In Fine Feather

Responding to some recent inquiries about the Crooked Little Hen, I want to report that she is alive and well! I took this photo about an hour ago. She hangs out in the goat yard and these days is enjoying roosting at night on the goat pen gates. She’s an independent gal, with a mind of her own. Sometimes I also get concerned questions about the Crooked Little Hen’s health because of her crooked beak. She’s doing just fine. She is, in fact, one of my oldest chickens, from my very first incubator hatching. She’s about two and a half.

If you’re new and you missed ’em, here a few of my favorite Crooked Little Hen stories:

She hasn’t been hanging out with Mr. Hyde for awhile. I’m not sure what happened.

It’s always the “crooked” ones that stick it out the longest, maybe they just have the strongest will to live since they aren’t quite the same as the rest of the crowd. My mother in law had a chicken, Beaker, who was raised in a cage before she got her and her claws were crooked and she was always hunched over. And then when Beaker got old, MIL wanted to put her out of her misery and went to hit her over the head with a shovel and couldn’t make herself hit her hard enough to actually kill her, so she was just a little, shall we say, slow after that… poor thing lived quite a while longer than she had any right to.

I had one born with a crooked beak last spring she only lived 4 months, and she never grew like the rest, but she followed me everywhere I went she was truely missed when we lost her.

Did she ever hatch out any chicks? I seem to remember her nesting. If she did, how did they turn out? I used to have a brown leghorn hen with a crooked beak. She lived a long time even with her disability. Your hen reminds me of her.
