Milk Report

I got a gallon plus 8 ounces yesterday!!!!! I’m doing better!

I put a bolt on the end of the pin and she didn’t get out yesterday. Also, I brought quart jars and a funnel with me. When I finished milking, I used another bucket for a stool and sat right in the middle of our little dirt country road outside the fence pouring milk into jars. I screwed on the caps, put the jars in a box, and drove up to the house–instead of trudging up to the house carrying the bucket. (Whew.) Then I made some mozzarella yesterday afternoon–my first cheese with my own cow’s milk!

I knew you’d figure out the best way to handle this! You’re awesome, and I’m learning from you everyday for when I can get my own little place in the country. I’m learning to never say never. Congratulations! Oh, and love the guineas – they’re good watch dogs, I hear.

That’s great. Congratulations on finding a good routine for now.

I suspect as pasture comes on strong, she will give even more.

I bought a case (4in) of 1/2 gallon canning jars for our milk. I live the wide mouth; they are easier to clean.

I’m guessing your sweet cow is very, very relieved to have you get a gallon plus as well… LOL

I noticed you are using the lids and bands on your jars… did you know that Ball makes plastic washable reusable lids for those jars? They have both the regular and wide mouth size – they are white… maybe 8 in a package. I use them on my jars once I’ve opened a canned item to store in the refrigerator or if I use the jar to store leftovers in the refrig. or dried goods in the pantry. Might be easier than fussing with the 2 part lids.

    You go girl!!! :dancingmonster:

I knew you’d get it going better – you just HAD to, didn’t you. What good suggestions your blog friends are giving you. Nothing like experience, and how good of them to share. I’m glad someone(s) is helping Suzanne. :woof:

  7. Glenie says:

Way to go Suzanne! Enjoy all that milk. Is there any way of at home drying it for later use?

  8. CindyP says:

    Yay Suzanne! :moo:

Was making the cheese any different with fresh milk vs store milk?

  9. melissa says:

Your’re doing great. Putting the jars in your car reminds me of a story I read about a farmer’s wife. She put mason jars of fresh cream in the back of her car and drove around all day running errands and at the end of the day – butter! I wonder if that would really work?

  10. Angela P says:

:moo: The color of the milk is gorgeous. Your amazing Suzanne.

  11. MMT says:

How lucky you are to have your own cow and milk. I plan to make some butter and cream cheese today, but have to use store bought. Sounds like you found a much better system to get the milk to the house. Keep up the good work.

  12. KentuckyFarmGirl says:

Sounds like you got a system there! I knew it wouldn’t take you long! I called the lady about our milk goat and she still hasn’t separated the babies from the mommas yet….so I’m still waiting….impatiently!

  13. Kari says:

I find it so amazing the color difference between your sweet cow’s milk and store bought… awesome!

  14. BrendaE says:

I don’t know how you do all the work around there and have time to write also but keep it up Suzanne. I read your blog everyday and look forward to it immensely. It takes me back to a time when life was great and makes me want to buy a farm like right now but since I can’t – I love reading about yours.

  15. Tracy Jones (aka fullpantry) says:

OOOOhhhhh! I wanna see pics of the cheese! Was it hard to make? I REALLY want to know how to do this!

  16. Mary from Baton Rouge says:

Congratulations Suzanne! You’ve mastered another phase of self sufficient living. I love all of your posts. They are very entertaining, but I am learning as you do. I am going to try my hand at making cheese this weekend. We have a vendor at our Farmer’s Market that sells fresh goat’s milk. Wish me luck! I will be using your recipes.

    Thank you, and keep blogging!

  17. Runningtrails says:
