Now It Can Be Told

Weston, age five, wearing Power Ranger gloves and carrying a ninja sword. I think the stuffed Barney is the perfect finishing touch.

The first round of National Merit Scholarship winners were announced in press releases across the country yesterday. I’ve known for several weeks that Weston was a corporate scholarship winner and therefore no longer a finalist but a National Merit Scholar, but wasn’t allowed to say it until after the official public announcement of the corporate winners was made on April 20. There is a series of announcements over several months releasing the names of 2011 National Merit Scholars, based on what type of scholarship they were awarded. Weston received a corporate scholarship (which is one of the higher dollar scholarships, almost twice as much as the standard National Merit Scholarship award). I knew his name should be on the corporate scholarship press release in West Virginia and then it wasn’t and I almost had a heart attack. Three or four phone calls to the National Merit Scholarship offices later, they finally figured out that when he had originally taken the PSAT, he had coded the wrong state code and somehow all through this program, that code has lingered in the dark recesses of their system to reappear when they generated their press releases. His announcement was sent in the press release to Washington state media instead of West Virginia. The press releases with the names are actually released by the media, in combination with the local towns and high schools of the recipients. A whole bunch of newspaper offices all over Washington state were probably really wondering who this Weston person was who had a high school listed in Spencer, West Virginia, and threw out his name. (Yes, they had his high school down right.) So nobody in West Virginia ever got his name. And nobody in Washington state could figure out what they were doing with his name. So his name wasn’t published. And I almost had a heart attack.

Anyway! They are sending a new announcement out today with Weston’s name to the media in West Virginia, but I am allowed to say so now. HE IS A NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLAR!!!!

I’m going to go take some Valium now. (Just kidding! MAYBE.)

Just a bit of advise/ it won’t cost you anything.
Many times the truly gifted fail because details seems to be a waste of time. They go into the “I can’t believe it mode.” Slow down and smell the roses. Sloppy response can cost you money in the long run….When your money is gone it is gone. You were lucky this time…….
