Out!

I lived here for two and a half years. (See more about the old farmhouse here.) The most amazing part of that point is that in the two and a half years I lived there, I lived there for three winters. If there’s any season you don’t want extra of in the old farmhouse, it’s winter, but I managed to time it so I spent three winters there. Not three summers. Not three springs. No. Three WINTERS.

Anyway. (Apparently, I’m not over it yet.) Today, I LEFT THE FARM.

It was very exciting. I found a child-like person at my cousin’s house (next door to the old farmhouse).

She has a bed there, but she fell asleep on the couch last night watching a movie. She’s living the life of Riley over there. I tried to convince her to come home, but we are expecting another snowstorm starting tomorrow and she wasn’t budging.

Days after the last snowstorm, our road still looks like this:

It’s passable only with a 4WD and a slight death wish.

I went home, after my brief foray in civilization, and left my car at the bottom of the driveway, next to stacks of covered hay, where it will likely stay for months.

And in case you’re wondering:

1. I am not the one who got my car down the driveway.

And 2. I’m not the one who drove over that road!

  2. Joycee says:

the wind is howling here tonight and we are to get down into the 20’s. A least there’s no snow and ice to contend with…yet! There must not be chores in town!

  3. Yvonne says:

Morgan looks so peaceful and beautiful! Glad your car is at the bottom now. Looks like we may get a doozy of a storm. I know you are missing your kids being with you. Hang in there!

  4. Sherie Adams says:

The wind is howling here tonight, also! And snow and maybe ice on the way. Looks like you have things semi-under control! Morgan is so beautiful!

  5. Connie says:

Suzanne, have you thought about getting a snowmobile or Quad for the winter months? At least then you could drive to your car, go to town or whatever, then drive the snowmobile back to the house after you park your car again. Just a suggestion 🙂

  6. Cinderbama says:

What a lovely young woman Morgan is. Hang in there. We’re all freaking out down here in Alabama because of the temp dropping into the 20s, lol. Wish the quilt I’m working on were finished. At this rate it’ll be NEXT Christmas. Y’all hang in there!

  7. Jenny says:

Today’s the first time in over a week that I’ve had my car down the driveway since its only 2wd. I knew I had to get it down today with the storm they are calling for tomorrow or it could have been the rest of winter with the way things are looking now! I see plenty of tromping through the snow in my future.

Ok. I’m sorry I don’t get it, but I am from Southern Alabama and it of course NEVER snows here. In fact, I think I have seen three flurries in my whole life. Are you guys stuck like this until March??

  9. Lisa says:

I was thinking the same thing as Connie… girl you NEED a snowmobile! You could pull a sled full of supplies up your mountain anytime you want!

  10. lyzcollins says:

I offer you a quote from my favorite author, Frank Herbert, from his book “Dune:” I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” There isn’t anything that you can’t do, including driving that road. If I can do it in my 22-year old car here in Rochester, NY with only winter tires and front-wheel drive, you can do it in your SUV.

  11. glenda says:

Winter is coming a little early this year!

Maybe a horse and sled would be cheaper than the other vehicles????

  12. Linda Goble says:

So I guess you still keep heat on and must have food still in the old house for the kids to eat. I am with Connie maybe a snowmobile would help you out and kids can ride it back an forth to get on the bus. Then you will have your children home.

  13. Diane says:

You need a quad. Those you can ride over mud or snow. Put the word out you never know what will show up. lol. That is my theory when I am looking for something that would be useful but I can do with out but would make my life easier.

  14. Leah says:

We have winter storm warning out in IN. Looked out the window this morning and you can barely see the snow coming down it’s so slight and theres only a dusting of snow I can see the road and the leaves arent even covered up!Well ok on second look I cant see the road now and most of the leaves are covered up…:(

  15. bonita says:

Suzanne–how about using the old oil derricks as supports for a funicular? That would get you up and down the hill in style. Kids and their friends would love it, No? too tourist-y? hmmm, back to the drawing board
!oh Leah, it’s coming—lots of wind blowing the snow so furiously that I can barely see across the street. Storm windows icing over… I can get my small SUV out of the garage, sort of, but backing it in, moving across the frozen, slanted apron is he**. I have to go slow enough to maneuver a tight turn but I need a burst of power to get up the incline. The garage wall already has evidence of how unsuccessful I can be!

  16. Miss Becky says:

The blizzard has just moved east of us here in Wisconsin. I escaped with only an inch or two of snow because I live right next to Lake Michigan so it rained most of the night. By the time it turned to snow the storm was already moving off to the east. Now we have the high winds to deal with. Stay safe Suzanne and keep that fire in the wood stove burning bright!

  17. Grammie Earth says:

    I have no snow.
I do have to scrape the car windows each morning :help:
    I have no snow.
It’s supposed to rain here for the next week.
    I have no snow.
I don’t have to shovel. The oil is lasting longer.
    I have no snow.

Kraizy stuff with you being in WV and me being all the way up the coast to Canada!

    I still have no snow…

  18. Ann says:

I feel just a little better knowing that your daughter doesn’t want to be snowed in at home. My son prefers a friend’s, where there’s teenage company and a PS3. Obviously, I no longer need to take it personally. Thanks, Suzanne!

  19. Ramona says:

    That’s some scary driving there.
