Shelf Hen

This hen has started laying on my “gardening shelves” on the back porch. Yesterday, I found her up on the bottom shelf, laying an egg WHILE eating the egg she’d laid the previous day (which I hadn’t noticed). I picked up the fresh egg right quick. Now that I know she’s chosen this handy location to deposit her jewels, I’m thinking of just putting an egg carton there. Maybe she’d lay right in the carton!

That is too cute! Well, except for the whole ‘eating the egg’ part :shroom: But how convenient can farm life get. When you say “fresh eggs right outside my door” you really, really mean it.

    *Sigh* I want a farm.

Maybe you should just have the Girls line up every morning …come in the house…deposit the eggs…and then let them go on their merry way. 😉

That’s so cute. But she’ll go find another place now that you know where she’s been laying. That’s what mine do. Every time I’d find a nest full of eggs, I’d leave one. The next day they’ve gone to better places and the search is on again. But that would be right handy if she’d just stay right there. Chickens are so funny.

 Mid 20th century folk lore popped up in my memory while reading about your Shelf Hen. Auntie used to say, ‘if they’re eating their own eggs they need oyster shell (for calcium) with their feed’. ??? Funny what pops into my memory reading your posts. Guess the saying is true. You CAN take the girl outta the country…

I had no idea that was something they would do!

While delivered fresh to your door eggs are convenient, a hen house and nests might be better. Chicken poop all over your shelves and deck aren’t as appetizing–just sayin’

She’s weird!!! You’d think it would be uncomfortable on top of all the other shelf things!!!

Chickens are a constant source of fun and food! lol

When I first looked at the picture, I thought you’d gotten a ceramic hen to go with the ceramic squirrel. A very realistic ceramic hen.
