Jack’s pretty used to his groomer. We are the third (and final!) of Jack’s owners to use the same donkey hoof trimmer. But he got pretty upset about the whole thing last night because it caused a temporary separation between him and Poky. He was antsy while he was being trimmed. Then we put him back and brought out Poky. We recently brought Poky down to the meadow to join him. When we put him back in the meadow and brought Poky out, he almost broke the gate in desperation.

I think he loves Poky.

Ooo, do we have donkey love?

  2. monica says:

Oh isn’t that cute! Might there have been a bit of romance in the air??? “Finally not a crazy one & that speeaks my language!”
He looks so much smaller than I imagined–he is smaller than my pony when I was little.

  3. Tovah says:

A halter would probably help you control him better. Looks like all you have is a lead rope! Also is there a place where he can get his feet trimmed but still see poky? That might solve your problem too.

I don’t have a donkey, but I have found that our “Romeo” horse does much better with the farrier if “Juliet” horse is nearby. If she watches him, he is on his best behavior! If his rival gelding(his perception-he was gelded late)is too close by, he acts crazy.

  5. Tammy says:

I never get tired of your goat pictures and stories, along with all your other critters!

  6. Michelle says:

Awwwwwww that is so cute that they’re in love!! 🙂

  7. Jennifer Robin says:

Every time I see your donkeys, it makes me want one (or 2 or 3!) of my own. How do they get along with Coco?

    • Suzanne McMinn says:

They get along with Coco most of the time! She’s big, like them, but they’re bigger, and sometimes they’re a little pushy with her, which is okay because she needs to be reminded that she’s not always the biggest animal on the farm, LOL. Coco and Poky could be real sweet together sometimes, but Poky doesn’t see Coco as much now that she’s down in the meadow bottom.

Donkeys are very protective of each other. When our Sassafras just had her baby, little Fannie Banannie, a few weeks ago, we kept the two of them segregated in a “bonding suite”. The other donkeys (the geldings not the stud, though) wouldn’t leave the door of her pen. Just wanted to be close by. Very cute. We have them all together when they get trimmed, they all get haltered and the one being trimmed has a rope on. But actually they stand like little statues for the farrier.
