When I moved in, there were three clay flower pots on each of these weathered old church pews outside the cellar.

I’m down to two.

After watching a hen jump up and break one this morning. (The pots are planted, by the way, with marigolds. Which had just sprouted.)

Offending hen:

I give up. I know when I’m beaten. And broken. The flower pots will have to be set on the ground forevermore.

Where the chickens can just reach in and dig them up.

It’s just win-win for them, isn’t it?

Consider the size of a chicken brain. Then consider how much planning, scheming, and plotting they do. Scary ain’t it? :chicken:

How about placing a piece of chicken wire over the plants to prevent the chooks digging? Or even an upturned wire hanging basket – the plants will grow through them. I use the upturned hanging basket method over the cat nip in my garden to prevent it getting totally crushed by puss. :purpleflower:

Isn’t there something about the egg yolks being more golden if the hens eat marigolds? Or have I fallen for a city slicker leg-pullin’ joke? 🙂

I have given up on my flower beds, with 60some hens alone there is no chance of survival, not even the brick one in the front by the door that is 3 ft off the ground and in the FRONT not the back yard. They go into the flower beds and PICK the flowers and leave them to rot. I don’t even get to cut them myself.
Think chicken fencing is the only way to go, but it won’t happen here this year. Maybe on the new property I can do it this year, then I can move them there and they can survive and there aren’t any flowers to dig, only elephant garlic.

You need to borrow my heeler. I’ve got 30+ hens and she keeps them out of the garden. She lives for them to look like they are going to the garden. Keeps her busy!

My chickens are forever digging up my bulbs! We got fencing and it only slows them down. So we got bigger fencing and then realized how are you supposed to weed it?? LOL

  7. Grouchymama says:

Just two words on the subject of your clay pots, “Hanging baskets”.

This is one beautiful hen. What kind is she? Thanks.

Here’s how old I am. To me, “Buff Orpington” (as in “Mrs Buff-Orpington”) is and always will be the name of a very, very rich woman who rides around in a very, very long limo. Her claim to riches was simply stated. Her catch-phrase was “My husband invented the chicken.”
