Morgan is 17 today! She wants me to make cupcakes from a box mix, because that is her favorite. She loves the cardboard taste of too many preservatives, and she loves to cause me great pain.
However. Last night, her boyfriend was here for dinner. (I made fajitas with venison sausage. I didn’t tell her it was venison sausage because Morgan doesn’t eat venison. That she knows about.) After dinner, they went upstairs to watch TV. I went up and asked Justin if he wanted some spiced sweet potato nut cake with cinnamon-whiskey ice cream. He said, yes, of course. Ignoring Morgan, I went back downstairs.

She came plowing down the steps. “Why didn’t you ask ME if I wanted some?”

Me: “You’re picky, Morgan. Justin will eat anything. That’s why HE’S MY FAVORITE CHILD.”

I can say this because Justin is not even my child.

Morgan: “I want some of that cake!”

Me: “It’s sweet potato cake, Morgan. It has STRANGE THINGS IN IT.” Like nuts, not to mention the sweet potato, and then there’s the ice cream that is not chocolate. “You WON’T like it.”

Morgan: “I WANT IT.”

Okay. So I got her some cake and ice cream. She ate it then came back downstairs defiantly and told me that she liked it JUST FINE.

Someday, I’ll tell her that she likes venison, too, but not yet. Shhh.

In other unrelated news, but related to the “teaser” post title–I am preparing to post about this year’s events on the farm. If you’re interested in coming to a retreat, workshop, or the party on the farm, the info is coming! I’m working on it, so stay tuned!

Happy Birthday Morgan! You won’t believe it now, but one day you will find your mothers cooking to be far superior to that which the supermarkets produce. Have a lovely day:)

    Happy Birthday to Morgan!
Our kids prefer the store bought pizza (the kind that comes on a little circle of cardboard and runs about 3 bucks a pie) over the home made divinity we craft every Friday night. I too think it is because they enjoy the cardboard flavor!

Happy Birthday, Morgan! MIne’s a week from today. I WISH I were 17!! LOL!

@SpinnersEndFarm – I hated the frozen pizza so much when I was in high school, that I learned to make real pizza.
Suzanne – I love venison. I wish I had access to it. And the cake sounded great.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MORGAN!! hope you have a great day.

I, too, love store bought cakes. With all the beautiful and delicious icing.
The rest of the year I make cakes for people, from scratch. But, for my b’day I buy one from the bakery in the grocery store. Something about child hood tastes.
Also don’t like pies. Any kind of pie. Sorry. ;)
But that ice cream sounds like a winner.
Venison, any way shape or form. Yes! It is wonderful.
    No pork, no lamb/mutton.
Yup, I am picky. Lived in Asia for years and mostly cook with veggies, rice and a small amount of meat.

I loved this post! The entire episode played out perfectly. One of those rare times in which all Mom’s secretly say…nah nah nah nah nah nah. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MORGAN! And sweetie, “it won’t kill you”.

    Happy Birthday, Morgan!!

Every Easter when my kid was little I looked for beautiful & creative Easter basket ideas–once made a big bunny nest full of stuff, etc. Only to find that all along he had been longing for one of the cellophane wrapped Walmart specials. His dad carefully crafted outdoor play stuff & a playhouse only to discover our son wanted the shiny metal one. My cooking is rejected often in favor of frozen & fast food–this from a kid who once could eat a pound of meatloaf or chicken & dumplings, etc. at a meal.

Sending Morgan happy birthday wishes from across the pond :happyflower:

    Morgan’s 17! S-E-V-E-N-T-E-E-N !! Wooo-hooo

I detect reverse psychology in play with regards to the cake and ice cream. As to the venison….what she doesn’t know can’t hurt her.

  17. 1-22

You are sneaky! Happy birthday to Morgan!!!!!

    Happy Birthday to Morgan!

Yeah on the retreat information! Star has a fall trip to Australia with her parents, but she’s holding back on the date until she can confirm the date for CITR retreat! I had to laugh at her telling me…..but, I want to go with you and Ashly to CITR …LOL

That’s pretty big…..CITR retreat competing with her overseas trip! She had such a good time last yeat- we all did! Can’t wait to do it again!

I laughed all the way through your post. So funny!! Tell Morgan Happy Birthday. I know she will not see this. Since she does not read your blog, and she will not know she is eating venison. Makes me wish I had some venison. I grew up on venison, but never get any now.

  20. 1-22

    :snoopy: :) Happy Birthday Morgan!

  21. 1-22

Wow, kids grow up so fast. Susanne, I read your post a few days ago on the sweet potato cake and cream cheese frosting and it all looked so delicious. I will have to try that recipe as I love carrot cake with walnuts and so I’m sure the sweet potato cake recipe will be a fun and delicious twist that I’ll get to try. Thanks for sharing it! Also, Happy Birthday to Morgan! Morgan, enjoy your year being 17. Please don’t try to grow up too soon. Enjoy being a young girl, have fun at school with all your peers and friends, and school activities. In a few years may you look at the time when you were seventeen and not have any regrets! Have fun, enjoy & be young! :happyflower:

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....
