Morgan’s boyfriend’s birthday is this weekend. She wanted me to help her make lasagna, ahead of time for the freezer, because I’ll be rather occupied this weekend. I also helped her make a green bean casserole, and she’s going to make homemade bread on Saturday–she knows how to make bread by herself. She’s been surprisingly interested in cooking lately for a girl who’s always said she “hated cooking”–kind of like how she used to tell me that she “hated reading” and now her room is like a library. She told me she wished she could make him a cake, too, but she’s never made a cake from scratch and didn’t want to make it advance. I told her she needed to leave his family something to do. She said, “They use store-bought box mixes at his house!” You know, in a tone of near horror.

I was so delighted.

The peach has not fallen far from the tree. The fellow that takes Morgan for his bride will be lucky indeed, she has been instilled with all that is important to make a good home, and she has had a strong woman for a role model.

She could always make a cake, freeze it unfrosted. Most cakes freeze really well. And yes, Morgan is a well rounded young woman who seems to have a responsible head on her shoulders. You have done a great job,as a single parent,Suzanne, with all your kids!

Count me in as also surprised to see the SHREDDED store bought cheese! I shouldn’t tease, my attempts at mozz were epic fails.

Isn’t it amazing at how simple appreciate for cooking can motivate someone to learn the skill? My now husband’s appreciation was the spark I needed.

Morgan’s tone of horror at the boxed cake mix must have made your heart smile and skip a beat. Kudos to each of you.
