This Might Be Gross

I guess Boomer thinks Casper is good for something since he will share body heat with him on a cold afternoon ON MY LOUNGE CHAIR on the porch.

You might not want to read on if you don’t want to be grossed out (and yet, how can you not now that I’ve said that?!). I don’t suppose anyone ever said dogs had discriminating tastes, but even so, sometimes I am still amazed and utterly disgusted by what they will consume.

Such as, the other night, when Boomer sat down and made a meal out of Fanta’s afterbirth.

Aren’t you glad I didn’t take a picture?

Hilarious! No picture needed. It is a good thing that we also can’t smell things as well as a Dog can. The piture of the dogs tells us having a friend is wonderful.

  2. whaledancer says:

Oh, heck, it probably wouldn’t look worse than some canned dog food. ๐Ÿ˜† And after all, people in various cultures throughout history (and today) have the mother eat the placenta. It’s called placentophagia, and it’s supposed to confer nutritional and medical advantages to the new mother.

I don’t that’s nearly as gross as when the dogs dragged home deer parts they found in the forest. At least the afterbirth looks like meat.

They look SO comfy. You may have to give in and let them have that lounge chair.

  3. Nona says:

Oh my I guess your dogs are normal after all! hehehe
I would have loved to see a photo but you have been very busy
    keeping kids happy!

  4. Lindsay says:

Oh eugh! I’m glad you didn’t take a picture! I was thinking, “What could be gross? It’s such a cute picture!” You were right. That’s icky.

They look so sweet and comfy together though. I know they’re rotten little things, but they’re awfully cute!

  5. Melinda from Southwest Washington says:

I don’t know if you have coyotes, but at least Boomer cleaned up the area so that the coyotes did not smell it and come to the house for dinner.

  6. Linda Goble says:

Yes that is gross. I guess he didn’t get sick after eating it. That is what I hate when they bring deer parts home and then vomit it up later. Melinda was right about the coyotes. We are having big problem with them killing off the deer population where we live.

  7. Shelly Messier says:

Let nature take its course, I guess… That Casper sure is a cutie! :happypuppy: :happypuppy: :happypuppy: :happypuppy:

  8. Tracey In Paradise Pa. says:

    oh yuck…but not surprised!!

  9. Kelly says:

That is gross…..but so is the fact that Boomer is sleeping with his nose up Casper’s butt! Ha!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  10. DB says:

Yes, well, since I’ve just gotten up and haven’t had breakfast yet, I’m REALLY glad you didn’t take a photo of THAT!

  11. Diane says:

Love the photo. Good thing they are buddies all confy on the chair keeping warm. Kind of gross about the afterbirth. Yuck. What dogs will eat. Mine like to try to get into the cat pan for turds. I mean really cat turds. gross.

  12. glenda says:

That is still the one thing on the farm that I just can’t watch…a cow eating the afterbirth…….or anything else.

  13. hershiesgirl says:

    EEEEEWWWWwwwww!

  14. holstein woman says:

Just think if someone didn’t, the coyotes would be there or Suzanne would have to commission Morgan to the clean up crew.
I was just thinking I need another dog, Naaa, maybe not, mine got hit with the electric fence too much and won’t venture into the cow pastures, and shes an Ausie…..

  15. Linda Segerson says:

That is gross but dogs will be dogs! But you know God gave all the animals a purpose in life…….some just have more than one!

  17. Sherie Adams says:

Ahhh. . . . Farm Life! You gotta love it!

  18. lilac wolf says:

I had a dog that loved to clean the kitty litter for me…it was super gross. Dogs are like that.

  19. texwisgirl says:

Not surprised one bit. Our 5 big dogs pick up and devour the most horrid things – all with a twinkle in their eye!

  20. BrendaE says:

Well I’m not surprised because dogs eat their own afterbirth if they have puppies – but EWWWWWWWWWW – good grief Boomer – give that dog a cookie.

  21. Ramona says:

I’m not sure dogs can gross me out any more…..

  22. drucillajoy says:

blaghhh…I’m GLAD there’s no picture…I just sat down to eat my bowl of yogurt with orange marmalade & granola…that might have made it come back up

  23. northcountrygirl says:

Not exactly my idea of a snack…but, hey, he cleaned it up. As for the napping on the lounge chair, wait till Big Puppy joins them! :woof:

  24. Hlhohnholz says:

On the ranch during calving season (300 or so calves in a 3 month time span), the dogs think they are in heaven. Afterbirth EVERYWHERE! It’s sorta like frozen jerky, ya know. Of course, typically, the cows will eat their own afterbirth, it’s a survival leftover to remove as much of the scents that draw predators as possible (and some say it gives the cows back a source of calories & nutrients to help them recover from the stress of birthing).

  25. Larissa says:

Good source of protien. I guess.

  26. Urbanite says:

Dogs will be dogs. Which is exactly why I wouldn’t have a dog for anything.

  27. Beth Brown says:

:sheepjump: That is hilarious!! Gross yes, but my dog has been having the best time the past few days playing with a frozen hunk of horse manure. He spends hours kicking in the air and chasing after it.

Just don’t kiss em on the mouth!
    Beth

  28. Miss Becky says:

you know, when you wrote that Sprite walked away from all the clean-up, I was wondering how that got done, what happened to it. Now I know. Thanks for sharing that Suzanne!

  29. jlh says:

you know the dog thinks “I guarded her and the babies so nothing would happne, and look! she made me a treat!”

  30. Jackie Georgiou says:

Mmm… delicious and nutritious! Way to go Boomer- earnin’ your keep!

  31. Sharon Dziekonski says:

OK, I can top that! My does usually eat their own afterbirth. (I’ve been told that it’s a fantastic source of protein, so I let them) Anyhow, one year my then-young daughter was helping with one of the births and she asked what the placenta does before the kids are born. I was explaining it to her, talking about the nutrients and points of attachment, etc. when the doe burped while eating it! The placenta looked like a 12″ wide bubblegum bubble ๐Ÿ˜€ What a great mamagoat to help me explain the wonders of nature so perfectly!

  32. Deb Klenke says:

My dogs find dry or frozen cow patties a great play toy and snack. Absolutely grosses me out! :moo: :snoopy:

  33. judyh says:

Oh, I almost barfed on my computer while reading this. I thought the gross part was going to be Boomer sleeping with his nose in Casper’s butt! But then I laughed my head off when reading the readers’ comments.

  34. Tara says:

Chickens will also eat afterbirth, I’ve learned.

  35. marianne says:

Oh, ugh!! You’re right… that’s gross! Can’t say I’m missing the photo you didn’t take! lol

  36. lavenderblue says:

Ahhh! Country life, ain’t it great!

  37. maryann says:

Not any worse then the raw diet that is now becoming popular with dog owners and that is cow stomach and other internal items that are not consumed by humans.

  38. farmershae says:

LOL! No wonder they are sleeping so peacefully – full tummies!!!

  39. Karo says:

Dogs are disgusting. My sister and I have had many conversations about the gross things our dogs do. But all it takes is one look at that picture of Casper to know why we love them anyway!

I usually just try to pretend my dog didn’t really do those nasty things.

  40. Ulrike says:

    I wouldn’t have expected otherwise.

  41. Valerie says:

Animals do things that we find gross. When we’ve had our boy donkeys castrated, the vet throws the, um, er, well, “things” to the barn cats to eat. Which they do with gusto. And when the farrier trims hooves, dogs show up from far and wide to eat the trimmings. There is no accounting for taste. :hungry:

  42. texomamorganlady says:

well, it’s kind of oogy, but not strange or unusual. livestock guardian dogs (pyrenees, anatolians, etc)always eat the afterbirth of their charges. this keeps predators from coming around, it’s their job to do so. they will also eat the stillborn lambs, goats, etc. for the same reason. plus, they will often kill and eat anything they feel is a threat to the flock-most wild animals. and yes, it is also a protein bonus for them. the only thing i find odd about this is that boomer got it before the giant puppy. our lgd helps clean the newborn lambs and nudges them to their feet also.

  43. umstetter says:

Ah, our Chihuahua LOVED the cat “Tootsie Rolls” in the litter box. We’d take to yelling; “Baxter! Get OUT of the Tootsie Rolls.” and he would get away from the litter box long enough to make us think he’d left the area. lol And you’re right, NO kisses on the lips from the dog!

  44. smiledarlin says:

Not gross. texomamorganlady is right- the guard dogs know to clean up to prevent predators.
What I find gross is my dog will eat the poop-cicles out in the yard BUT only in the winter when they are frozen… Now that is YUCK to me… but to them it is another food source.
    Crazy critters.

  45. MsJanJ says:

Thanks for sharing friend. I am sure you saw enough for all of us ๐Ÿ™‚ I have five dogs that live a domesticated life inside with me and a stray dog that came to us near death back in October, 2012 that is un-altered and very much an OUTSIDE DOG!!! Why they do what they do is beyond me. The outside dog NEVER ROLLS in deer poop or any other wildlife remains, but will eat anything that looks to him to be a meal. My domesticated dogs on the other hand will EAT both the boy and girl deer poop and ROLL in anything that they think is different in smell. At 10:45pm last night I was giving Ninja, my 126 pound black labbie a BATH. He went for final potty break at 10:30, came back in smelling like an outhouse, licking his lips. I guess someone has to clean up the debris, but why oh why do DOGS feel they have to take on the chore? :hissyfit:
