Well, That Was Disappointing

It was supposed to THUNDERSTORM today. I was SO EXCITED. It’s barely rained for months (you know, since the Great Flood–we get it all at once or we don’t get it this year). So here it came, finally, this afternoon.

Yeah. That’s it. Barely enough to dampen the Sahara Desert of the barn yard creekbed. Woo hoo.

I was very disappointed. So were the pigs!

Though since she just ate a young Buff Orpington that had only seconds before escaped from the chicken house, I don’t know what she has to complain about. OMG. I did not know that pigs ate chickens.

I mean, I know they’re omnivores and everything, but the chicken got out, and before I could even turn around, the pig ate it. WTF!!!! Next thing you know, she’s got chicken feet hanging out her mouth.

Not a pig story, but it has a better ending. 🙂 I have a hen with 5 chicks in a 10×10 dog lot until they get big enough to go in the coop. The chicken wire that I had wrapped around the bottom of the chain link needed to be fixed, but I procrastinated. The babies would run in and out making the hen mad. Just like kids, you know. Well… the hen decided she wanted out. Flew over the top of the pen, hollered for her babies and they popped right through the fence to follow her — into the goat yard where Roscoe and Leroy the LGDs live. They like to “play” with chickens. The hen started yelling, I started moving, Leroy had fluff sticking out his lip. FabHub jumped the fence and Leroy set the chick down and looked at us like “What? I was protecting it from the goats!” I got the yelling hen and soggy baby back in the pen and the other babies all came out of the grass. Then we fixed the fence.

A pig will eat a chicken??? I have learned the most interesting, and sometimes strange stuff reading C.I.T.R. Waiting for the next installment about your amazing farm.

When we had pigs a couple of years we had a chicken die so we tossed the body into the pig pen, OMG! It was frightening just how brutal they were with the carcass. It made us even more careful while tending the pigs.

Goodness! When I was a child and lived on the farm, I was terrified of the big pigs, and maybe it was a good thing. That is downright scary.

How are the LGDs doing? Haven’t seen anything on the dogs in awhile.

That was a shock! I would have thought the chicken could have flown up and away from the pig quicker…..never had that one happen on the farm.

I heard horror stories from grandparents growing up about hogs and people…..I won’t elaborate.

I joined a group on facebook about pastured pigs and I have learned that pigs do eat live animals. Keep your lambs and goats and chickens, etc away from pigs if you want them to stay alive. I had no idea pigs could be so… brutal. Real nasty ones will even break into places to get at the other animals. Scary!

WOW, just WOW…I didn’t know that pigs ate chickens either. Definitely a WTF moment.

They will eat humans too. I imagine it would be a matter of dozens and dozens of pigs but I know you don’t want to fall down in a huge pig holding area. Poor chicken

When things like that happen, stand in shocked silence, then sing loudly “Ciiiircle of liiiiiiiiiife….” that is what we do LOLOLOL! The first time I saw chickens come upon a mouse nest and happily – no GREEDILY – gulp down baby mice then look for more? Life lesson on that circle of life thing. Pigs are often “nippy”, because they are tasting everything to see if they can eat it -hahahaha….but really Ew.
