SUZANNE, COME BACK!

***** News Flash!  Suzanne is back!  Stay tuned!****

Hi folks!  Just a note to let you know that Suzanne is still without Grid power, and apparently telephone also!   There are many thousands of people in the same boat here in West Virginia, but hopefully she will be back on line sometime in the next few hours…. or at least by Tuesday night.    In the meantime,  just to change the view, I’ll add a few photos that I’ve taken in the last several months.

Mall

Remember when Suzanne and the kids visited the Mall last Fall?  I had to be there to document the occasion because how often does Suzanne visit my town?   Morgan was pretty funny the entire time for some reason.  I remember when I went through that “everything is funny” stage myself.  Drove my mother nuts!

________________________________

Newspaper

Here they’re visiting Charleston Newspapers where Suzanne writes a weekly column.  As you can see,  Morgan thinks newspaper offices are funny too!

________________________________

Art

Later, we visited the Clay Center to see the really ugly statue.  No, not this statue!  The other one that Suzanne published in her blog.  This one isn’t too bad actually!

________________________________

visit6

As we moved to another part of town,  I just had to take this shot of Suzanne getting on the Interstate.  I mean,  how often does she get to drive on a real 4 lane highway!

_______________________________

Sports Car

This photo is funny to me because I had just crossed the most inhospitable country road known to man in a low slung sports car just to visit Suzanne for the very first time.  And what does she take pictures of?  Giant Puppy!  Hahaha..  (photo taken a couple of years ago)

Kids

I leave you now with a gratuitous farm shot that I took last summer at open house.  After all, how can you beat a photo of kids playing with Kids?

UPDATE PHOTO

Snow

Just had to show you what we’re dealing with here.  This is the table on my deck with a 12 inch ruler sticking out.  As you can see, Suzanne is REALLY snowbound here in WV.

PHOTO UPDATE # 2.  I JUST HAD TO ADD THIS!

snowcake2In the comments section, Buckeye Girl  posted the following: “Is that a giant coconut cream frosted cake on your back deck Jerry?  Did Suzanne bake it for you? She’s been baking that giant fluffy frosted cake for you for a Christmas present right?” So, I had to add this photo because it DOES look like a Coconut cake doesn’t it?

I’m sure Suzanne will be back soon.  No one can ever take her place here and Lord knows I’ll never even try.   Just wanted to put something up because I know how much you all enjoy having new posts every day.  (even if they’re bad ones from me)  So hang in there….  hopefully this will be deleted soon and we can get on with our lives here on Chickens In The Road. Take care!   Jerry …   friend and Admin

Enjoyed the pictures! Hope Suzanne and family are warm and cozy! Wonder what she is baking? I think I smell cinnamon rolls!

  2. Connie Trippett says:

Thanks for the photo tour Jerry. Yes it is hard to go a day without having my blog to read. Hopefully there power will be on soon. Drives me crazy when it goes out for a day or two up here in southeastern ohio. Last year was out on Christmas eve.

I just have to say, Jerry… I remember when she posted about your visit. I too drive a Miata (we’ve had as many as 9 at one time, we build and race them), and I have to commend you for making it up to the farm in that car

  7. WvSky says:

This is my 5th one! All my others were used, but this I bought new because it’s the very first with a Turbo, and 17 inch wheels! Darned thing only gets 17 mpg in the city the way I drive it (on Premium no less) but that’s why I bought it… to go fast! :sun:

  8. ScarlettSeraph says:

I thought it was the MazdaSpeed *drools* I want one, I’m super jealous… lol. We have some with turbos and superchargers, they’re so quick! The one I drive daily is plain jane, but I love it more than any car I’ve ever owned!

  9. WvSky says:

I forgot to mention: It’s the very LAST MazdaSpeed they made that year. I belong to the MazdaSpeed website where we all check our VIN numbers to see what day and month our cars were made. Mine was last! So now we know where the first, last, and many in the middle are.

  10. Susan from Missouri says:

    Thanks, Jerry! :happyflower:

  11. anni says:

Well thanks for posting today Jerry, it’s fun to see pictures of Suzanne, on Suzanne’s blog (we don’t get too many of her)
    Good job.
    Anni

Jerry, I don’t know you… but thank you! I just hope Suzanne is getting along ok. Those are good pics and I love how Morgan is enjoying herself. 😆
Thanks for filling in the gap! :sheepjump:

  13. Rituparna says:

Hey Jerry thanks for the pics …
Hope Suzzane and all are warm and cozy and Suzzane is baking them all the Christmas goodies and taking fabulous pics to flood us with.
Waiting for her to come back. I’m missing my daily doze of adraline.

  14. Barbara says:

  15. masonjar says:

I am very much looking forward to hearing of Suzannes snowbound adventures, I bet there are some fantastic photos and stories. STAY WARM America!!!! :sun:

  19. Kathy says:

    8) Hello Jerry. Thanks for the pics of Suzanne. She is camera shy and it’s nice to see her sweet face. Really looking forward to the snow pictures that will come out of this hardship. If and when you do speak to her, tell them we hope all is well with the farm & the critters.

  20. CindyP says:

Does she know all these pics of her are up here???? I didn’t think so!!! 😆

And that 4 lane highway….I’m sure the Explorer was happy, not so much Suzanne!

Thank you, Jerry, for the update and some fresh pics :sun:

  26. quietstorm says:

Good Morning Jerry, thanks for posting for Suzanne. Hope things get back to normal for her soon. Last yr at this time it was us up here in New England. We were without power for 11 days. 27. NorthCountryGirl says:

  28. Kathryn says:

Thank you, Jerry. What a kind thing to do!

  29. wvhomecanner says:

Great job on the blog post Jerry! And thanks for adding that last pic which speaks volumes :reindeer:
Still a mess up here in Harrison County too. Roads more clear but HUGE piles of snow are everywhere.

    Dede

  30. Runningtrails says:

Wow! To be without power in that kind of weather for this long is hard. I am so glad they installed that wood stove and I’ll bet they are too!!

  31. Nancy says:

Thanks for posting Jerry! So nice to see Suzanne and the kids. Odd how we don’t know them, but it’s interesting to see how they’ve grown over the years.

Anyway, you’ve made my day, and fyi, I got a roll of shivers down my back when I saw all that snow!

And to “quietstorm” ~~~~ 11 days without power. Holy moly!

    Nancy

  32. Susan at Charm of the Carolines says:

What a beautiful snowfall! We are still anxiously awaiting our first flake! Much love to Suzanne, keep warm, stay safe.

    Susan

  33. Carmen Smith says:

WOW that’s alot of snow!!!! Hope the power gets back on soon:)

  34. Barbee' says:

You are a good sport, Jerry. That’s really nice of you. What a good idea. Good pics and interesting ones, too. A nice surprise to discover a change of pace and subjects here this morning. The car: WOW! Hope you didn’t break a spring driving that bedrock road.

  35. kristin sherrill says:

Wow! That’s a lotta snow. I hope it doesn’t move on down here to Georgia. I do hope they get their power back on soon. And thanks for the update. Great pictures, too.

    Kris

  36. trish says:

Thank you Jerry! Great post! I loved seeing the pictures of Suzanne and the kids too! I have the same snow, but at least I have power.

This is Suzanne’s forced vacation. She had an eventful year and probably needed the down time.

  37. Claudia says:

Thanks for posting Jerry, that is quite a blanket of snow! 😮

  38. Debnfla3 says:

Thanks Jerry for keeping us posted! Hope Suzanne is okay and gets her power back on soon.
That is a LOT of snow! I don’t think I would even be able to walk in that mess, but it sure is pretty.

    Deb

  39. Gail says:

Jerry, that was so considerate of you to post this morning. Loved the photos and it is good to see Suzanne in them! Morgan is a character isn’t she? I’m sure the kids are entertaining Suzanne while being snowed in! Great photos…thanks again!

  40. Jan says:

Thanks to Jerry, we know the snow is REAL, the lifestyle is REAL, and that Suzanne looks like she is missing the farm as she is driving on the interstate with her WALTON Tigers license tag! Let’s hope she is OK. I’m sure she is missing her subjects as much as we are missing her. Hopefully her camera battery was charged!

  41. flutterby says:

The snow on your table looks exactly like the snow on my table and we are many, many miles apart. Hope everyone is warm and comfy. Thanks for the pix and merry Christmas.

  42. trish robichaud says:

that is very kind of you jerry. your right about the love we have for citr and our dear suzanne. its times like these that she comes up with great craft or baking ideas to share. merry christmas jerry. ps. your writing is wonderful as well.

  43. Wammy says:

I was in Huntington over the weekend when the big snow hit and the govenor called for a state of emergency. Huntington didn’t get as much as the folks on down the Interstate. I can hardly wait to see the snow pics that she will share with us.

  44. wkf says:

Good Job, Jerry!!! Looks like y’all are in for another round.
Good Luck. I hope Suzanne can find her firewood.

  45. WvSky says:

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

I’ve never posted to the blog before and had to stumble my way through it. I just hoped that the steps I was taking were the right ones, without deleting the entire website! Lucky for me it worked. I sure hope that Suzanne’s power comes back on, because I would hate to have to keep doing this because I’m NO writer and I’m sure you wouldn’t want to see photos of my Maytag washing machine engine collection. Hahaha… ( Yes, washing machines used to run on gas powered engines. Many people on the farm had them) I am a little concerned however because they are saying it might be Friday before everyone’s power is restored. Let’s hope her’s gets fixed today!

  46. BuckeyeGirl says:

Is that a giant coconut cream frosted cake on your back deck Jerry? :hungry2: Did Suzanne bake it for you? :chef: Come on, tell the truth! That’s where she’s been all this time! :chicken: She’s been baking that giant fluffy frosted cake for you for a Christmas :grinch: present right? :snowman:

😆 Thanks for the great post!! You may not be able to replace Suzanne, but you stand in for her VERY well indeed! :woof:

  47. CityGirl says:

I would love to see photos of your maytag  .

You did good with the blog and I think you should fill in when she goes on vacation… :happyflower:

All that snow is shocking, I havn’t seen snow since I was three and I don’t remember it. You could slice that table like a pie.

  48. Kristen says:

Thanks for filling in, Jerry! 8)

  49. Box Call says:

Jerry we are grateful for the pictures of the “city tour”. I know we are going to blessed with some incredible photos and stories when Suzanne returns. Thank goodness it is not still snowing. I love snow but I hate power outages. Unfortunately in WV it seems we seldom get one without the other, and I only live a few miles out of Charleston…I can only imagine the plight of those in Roane,Clay, Pocahontas, Nicholas, and Greenbrier counties.

  50. Jessica says:

Thanks Jerry! I’m down in sunny Florida and I was thinking about suzanne last night while watching the news about the snow storm. Hope you guys can bundle up and stay warm! Thanks for keeping us all up to date though, I miss hearing from her everyday!

  51. WvSky says:

BuckeyeGirl, I added another photo just for you! 😆

  52. Liz in Wis says:

JERRY, you did a great job posting for Su. I am sure she will love it; you are a good friend. I think you are having fun: a very creative last picture. You made me laugh out loud. Thank you!

  53. Miss Becky says:

well la te da! A guest post, and this is special. thank you so much for the pics. they are a treasure because, as we know, Suzanne is shy about having her pic taken. From the photos it looks as if she will be digging out for some time…Suzanne, I hope you are warm and cozy with that blazing fire you have going right now! Hope to see you back here real soon. we miss you!!!

  54. Valerie says:

Great post, Jerry, thanks so much. That coconut cream pie looks nummy. I’m in MN and haven’t had that much snow…yet. It’s coming Wednesday night, though. I hope all is well with all you folks who are snowed in.

  55. Claudia W says:

Oh my! Thank you for posting for Suzanne, Jerry.
It’s nice to know someone’s got her back. You are a good friend and Admin person.
Although, now I am going to have to rethink my wanting a farm in WV. I really don’t want Coconut Cream Frosted Cake on my deck. I couldn’t handle the 55 pounds I would gain from eating all that! Besides, I am not a lover of snow.
Here’s praying that Suzanne gets her electricity/phone/internet back.
And Jerry, you should start a blog! I’d love to hear of your adventures too…washing machine engines, now that’s something I would like to see! Maybe then I could keep my washer working on my own!

  56. bethann says:

    Good job Jerry!!

  57. kerri says:

Thanks, Jerry, for filling in for Suzanne while she is still without power. What a treat to see these photos. Hope you didn’t damage that neat car on the old country road. Very brave of you to travel it!
My husband says he’d love to see your Maytag washing machine engine collection 😆 He’s not kidding 8)
I’m praying for a sooner rather than later return to power for Suzanne and all the others in the area who are dealing with this difficult situation, including the pole fixers! What a cold job!!
Thanks for this fun post while we anxiously await Suzanne’s return.

  58. Victoria says:

I enjoyed your post Jerry. I came here as I do every morning fearing Suzanne was still without power but delighted to read your update. I hope Suzanne gets power back soon but if not bring on the Maytag washer engine photos, haha.

  59. Hannah says:

That cracked me up! 😆 😆 😆 Thanks!

  60. ticka1 says:

Thanks Jerry for the post with updates and the pictures. That’s alot of snow and love the coconut cake picture – put a smile on my face. You are doing a great job of subbing for Suzanne. She now has a guest blogger to fill in for her! I nominate you!

Have a great day and Merry Christmas!

  61. Cyndi B says:

Loved the post, Jerry! Thanks for letting us know what’s going on!
    Merry Christmas to all!

  62. Su says:

Thanks for the photos & update! She is definitely missed!

  63. susan says:

Thanks for keeping us posted Jerry. I hope Suzanne and her staff are staying nice and taosty. Keep blogging Jerry, you are doing a fine job.

    Merry Christmas!!!

    :grinch:

  64. susan says:

    taosty–toasty whatever

  65. fidldd says:

Thank You Jerry. You did a great job and what a good friend you are to do this.
I hope you all are are warm and safe and that you have your aluminum foil also.

  66. CityGirl says:

Lets have some more pictures Jerry, …. some self portraits. :shimmy:

  67. BuckeyeGirl says:

😆 Love the cherry on top! Now I’m suddenly hungry and must go fix a snack! :hungry:

  68. Celia says:

I really enjoyed seeing the pictures and hearing about Suzanne’s trip, Jerry! You did a great job…hard to believe it was your first time. What a huge snowfall you all got! We got about 8″ but it never stays around long here in East Tennessee. I’m sooo glad Suzanne was ready for this but can’t imagine being without power for this long. Take care and keep warm!

  69. S. says:

Great googly moogly that’s a lot of snow. BTW where do I cast my vote for gratuitous goats frolicking in obscene amounts of snow photos?

  70. Linda Gilbraith says:

Thank you Jerry for posting. I come on here daily for my Suzanne fix and miss her very much. I loved the coconut cake picture. Very inventive.

  71. wvhomecanner says:

ROFL!! That cake pic is GREAT! Wish the snow would turn into cake – we would have an easier time getting someone to EAT the stuff instead of shovel it LOL!

    dede

  72. Nancy in Iowa says:

Great job, Jerry! My sister in NC just got power/water/phone yesterday after being without for about 4 days. First thing she praised was a flushing toilet – didn’t have to pour borrowed water into the tank! I’m waiting for our winter storm to start – still have many inches of snow on the ground from 2 wks ago. Thanks for stepping in! Give Suzanne my best wishes….
    :chicken: :chicken:

  73. Lynette says:

Great guest post Jerry, I enjoyed it very much! I hope Suzanne gets dug out really soon :hole: That snow looks like a lot of fun! :snowman:

  74. Brenda says:

Thanks Jerry for the post~ Are you sure Suzanne is not catching some rays somewhere on a beach with a mixed drink and a little itty bitty umbrella?? Probably the Bahamas!! 😉

  75. Pat says:

Thank you Jerry, that is so nice of you to keep us entertained and updated!

  76. bjo2298 says:

Great post Jerry! Please don’t let it get deleted, it belongs here forever. I live in Iowa and it looks like our Christmas will be a lot of snow, keeping family at home. Just hope my son makes it tonight, he has an 8 hour drive to get here. Snow is pretty but can cause all kinds of trouble. I hope Suzanne and her family are safe and warm and that everyone has a Merry Christmas!

  77. Tobey says:

Good job, Jerry! Thanks for stepping out from behind the wizard curtain to introduce yourself and provide a bit of fun just for us.

  78. Pete says:

Great job, Jerry. Seems you have found your Maytag engine collection audience! :help:

(Pssst. Don’t anybody tell Jerry, but when the time comes, there are a few folks around WV that DO have pics of Jerry, and somehow, they just might find their way here, or somewhere near here… But don’t let Jerry know about it…)

  79. catslady says:

Thanks so much, Jerry. I’m right next door in southwest Pa and very lucky to have only gotten 4 or 5 inches and no power outages.

  80. WvSky says:

Guess what? SUZANNE IS BACK! She will be preparing tomorrows post I’m sure. Thanks goodness that I wont have to, because I was going to reluctantly post the following:

If you’re reading this, it means that Suzanne is still without Grid power or telephone. According to the news today, there were still 75,429 West Virginia customers without power. Suzanne is on the Allegheny Energy system, which reported 1,126 outages in
West Virginia. They expect to restore electricity to all customers by midnight Wednesday.

This means that you’re stuck with me for another day or two. This also means that since I don’t live on a farm, nor have any recipes that I can share, it looks like I’ll have to make good on my threat yesterday to post my Maytag engine collection! You ladies may want to get your men to read this one. Ready? Here we go….

The reason I became interested in the Maytag engine is due to several things: It’s small. It was designed with women in mind (that’s REAL American history! ) and it’s an operating piece of history. There are Maytag engine clubs all over the United States.

The Maytag washing machine company started making washers in 1907 using a hand crank. This was much better than a common washboard, but still labor intensive. By 1911, an electric motor was added. There was only one problem: Much of America was still without
electricity. Most farms of the day wouldn’t have power for some time, so a means to operate the washer was sought. This time period coincided with the invention of the gasoline engine. And so it was reasoned that a small gas engine could power the Maytag. The company bought a small engine company and expanded it with their own designs. Maytag would make gas powered washers right up into the 1950s.

It used to be that you could buy these engines for peanuts. About $25 on the average. Today however, a good running Maytag engine will cost around $350. I personally have paid as high as $650 for one engine! The price depends on the year, model, and customization. ( yes, some people customize Maytag’s ) There are only three “basic” engines, and THE LAST two are easy to find. However, that first one is rare, and when you find one prepare to pay as high as $2,600 depending on style!

Ok, let’s take a look at what the women had to do to wash clothes where there was little or no electricity.

1… They had to mix gas and oil to the proper consistency.
2… They had to adjust the carburetor.
3… They had to snake the long flexible exhaust pipe out a window or door.
4… They had to step on a pedal (almost like starting an old motorcycle) until the engine started.
5…. After the clothes were washed, the woman had to run every piece through the ringer.

So there it is. Let’s take a look at some of these engines:
    https://www.mywvhome.com/maytag.htm

Now I dont have to! 🙂

  81. Cindy says:

Hey, Jerry, you did a great job of filling in–thanks!! Looking forward to Suzanne’s return.

    Merry Christmas!
    Cindy in Indiana

  82. Laurie says:

    Jerry,
Thanks SO much for the update and blog entry. It was great seeing green again too 🙂 Her survival skills are being put to the test. eagerly looking forward to Suzanne’s safe return. Thanks again!

  83. Arlene says:

She will have so many adventures to take us on!!! I am so glad they got set up for winters in West Virginia!! They can be beautiful and brutal.

  84. Farmer Shae says:

Jerry, thank you for the update on Suzanne and the snow pics. And THANK YOU for including your “would have been” post for tomorrow. I think the Maytag engines are gorgeous!!!!!!! Enjoy the snow!!

  85. ElizaRed says:

So, Suzanne, did you find out how many cubic feet of snow (or maybe buckets) it takes to get a gallon of water? and how many times did you have to go out and get the snow to melt on the wood stove to
-flush the toilet? OR did you make a lot of yellow snow?
    -make soup/cook/make coffee/tea/etc.?
-do the basic brush teeth, wash your face, etc.

Jerry, with no electricity when young, I remember the wash house and helping my Mom on Mondays feed the clothes through the wringer to rinse and then the bluing rinse. (And the kick start to get the washer started.) And then hanging the clothes on the line in the front yard to dry. And yes, she would have done the wash on this past Monday no matter how much snow there was between the wash house and the clothes line. I guess you have to really like those mechanical type things to collect them…they look really neat!

  86. Jo says:

Well, Jerry, I don’t quite “get” the whole Maytag engine thing…but I did go take a look at your site.

Now when I scrolled down and found pics of them all painted up nice and pretty, then it was like, “oh….ok.” And then I saw that bike with the engine attached and thought, “oh, my boys would love that!”

It’s kind of like in the past when we were looking buying a new car, the first thing I wanted to know was, “What color is it?” 😆 That’s all I cared about. :smilerabbit:

  87. Laurie says:

    Welcome back Suzanne!
    :moo:

  88. Myrna Mackenzie says:

Jerry, I remember (vaguely–I was pretty young) living in an apartment building with a washing maching that had a ringer. Mostly I remember being afraid of it because you had to use a stick to feed the clothes through and there was always the chance that a finger would get caught between the rollers (or so my mother warned me). Thanks for sharing. I find that stuff fascinating. Especially the history behind it.

Suzanne, I’m so glad you have an Internet connection again (nothing like being cut off from the world). Now here’s hoping you get power again soon, too.

  89. Angela says:

    Great post Jerry!

This storm was a really bad one for knocking out power to thousands. I just seen on the news that there are a lot of people who are really mad over it. There’s not much that one can do to prevent power poles from breaking. I hate it that people are without power. It seems like it is the ones who live in the city who are the maddest. They are used to getting their electric back without minutes to an hour but when you live out it takes days. I do remember a few years back when we had that ice storm and it knocked out power for weeks in the Jackson County area. We just need to be prepared like I’m sure that Suzanne was and everything will be just fine.

    Angela

  90. Taryn says:

Jerry, I am curious, do you wash clothes with these maytag washing machine engines you collect? That would make you even more perfect!

  91. Valerie says:

Looking forward to Suzanne’s adventures tomorrow! Thanks Jerry for filling in with your post today, and the Maytag engine post as well.

  92. Laurie says:

We are going to get an ice storm over Christmas eve and tonight. We don’t get outtages often here, but if it did, we are within walking distance of family. Suzanne’s self-sufficency is quite inspiring and I look forward to hearing how she pulled through. BBL.

  93. Terry says:

Jerry I really enjoyed reading your entry. My sister in law collects those engines too, and her hubby restores old tractors. I love going over there and let them show me all their new finds.
Suzanne, glad to hear you are doing ok. Stay warm and cross your fingers that we here in NE Okla don’t get too much of that white stuff. It’s a white Christmas here for sure. I only have to walk next door to my daughter’s,but my son and his family may not come on Christmas. Oh well, presents don’t melt, and there is going to be lots of leftovers! You all have a great Holiday.

Catching up on my blog reading on my day off. Great post, Jerry. My mom used a wringer washer, but it wasn’t gas powered. Guess we weren’t that far out in the country. My job was to guide the clothes through so that the buttons didn’t break. They still did. She was so happy when she got an automatic washer because she wouldn’t have to sew buttons back on every shirt after washing. We still kept the button box though, just in case.
