Boiled Ham

Apr

Looking for a recipe for boiled ham. DH’s mother used to fix it this way, he says, and I’d like to try it for him for Easter. I think you just put a half ham in a pot and simmer for hours, till it’s done, but I’m not sure! I hope someone here has done this and can help me out. Thanks!

You need to purchase a Picnic ham ( sometimes called a Calliham). You will need a stock pot that is big enough to hold the ham and enough water to cover it. Bring it to a boil and keep boiling it, basically you just cook it until it starts pulling apart easily with a fork. You can also use some of the water from the pan to boil potatoes in but be careful because it can be really salty. I have also used the water to boil cabbage in. I would use half the water from the ham and half fresh water to boil either the potatoes or cabbage in. I hope this helps you out. This is one of my favorite ways to have ham. Good luck!

Soooooo glad you confirmed that for us, Robin! I’ve never done it, but have seen people do boiled hams. All I saw them do was put enough water to cover it, then heat it a while. But, I wasn’t really sure if they did anything else to it.

Thanks for asking, brookdale, and thanks for the info, Robin!

Well I did this for dinner today, had a 6.5 lb piece and simmered it about 3.5 hours, came out perfect!

I did remember something that my Grammy used to do…she would put it in the pan with water to cover, bring to a boil and cook for just a few minutes, then dump the water out. She said it took some of the excess salt out. So I did that last night.

Thanks again for help and encouragement!
