My 14 month old is not a fan of hard cereals (Cheerios), but she loves Nutrigrain bars. I’m just not crazy about their cost or ingredient list (compared to something homemade). I’ve tried a recipe I found online, but it just tasted like mushed up and baked cheerios. Does anyone have a recipe for homemade soft cereal bars?

Extruded grains, like store-bought cereals are not good for anyone, especially kids. Neither are Nutri-Grain bars. If you would like to learn the recipe for nutritious baked oatmeal and other soaked-grain recipes see a couple of these blogs: Kelly the Kitchen Kop (www.kellythekitchenkop.com )or The Nourished Kitchen ( http://www.thenourishedkitchen.com ). I have linked this blog to both of those several times just recently.

If you would like to read about the dangers of extruded grains you will need to click this link and do a search using the words extruded grains or something similar. http://www.westonaprice.org

There are lots of things kids love once they get used to them. Eggs, for instance, are wonderful “brain food” for kids. Before age 1, don’t use the egg whites (common sllergen) just the softish cooked yolk. This was a first food for all three of my kids when they were babies, next was pureed meats, then veggies and last of all fruits. Any kid will eat fruit, it’s the other foods they will grow up disliking if they don’t acquire a taste for them early in life.
