I have just got round to registering! But since I have been an avid reader of this site, I have rediscovered the delights of baking. I have mastered cookies…hurrah! baked several big cakes and 4 loaves of Grandma Bread, the last two being poppy seed and sundried tomato. I have recently signed up for the Mammy Jane book so I am hoping […] View

  • I think in England these are called scones. Definitely sliced in half and each half smothered in homemade strawberry jam and a good old dollop of Cornish clotted cream. Eaten with a pot of hot tea for a Cornish cream tea. Oh My!!

    HI NCG,
Just browsing the CITR site and found we have been friends for two weeks now and I didn’t know. You must think I am rude! I hope you are doing ok and not suffering from the strange weather the US seems to be having recently. Its not too good here either..loads of rain and not much warmth. I am really enjoying the Lint Buddies group by…[Read more]

  • The stew I made was delicious and it made two large pies with plenty of extra gravy. The four of us had them two nights running with new potatoes and runner beans (frozen from last years crop). That was 8 meals for less than 20p (less than 30 cents) per meal and very nutritious too!!

  • I freeze all my meat bones from sunday roasts and yesterday the Crock pot came out. I emptied the freezer of bones and threw in loads of veggies. Its made a beautiful rich stew. I might thicken it tonight and make a pie. Ross, I would freeze the meat and the bone for lamb stew! […]

I worked all weekend in my veg patch behind the garage. With hubby’s help I now have gravel paths to my fruit bushes and I have beetroot, leeks, spinach and wild rocket growing in the raised beds. Next week I’ll be planting salad stuff, mangetout and runner beans. I emptied out my compost bin and […]

  • I have probably really missed the boat here seeing the date of your post! Anyhow..for next year’s jam/jelly season! Marguerite Patten in her book Jams, Preserves and Chutneys suggests using 2 cups of sugar per 1 pint of juice. As you are using apple juice no pectin is needed, but if you want and your […]

  • Hi debbie, I’m at work right now (BOO) but when I get home, I’m sure I have a mixed fruit jelly recipe. I made a fruits of the forest one last year. It’s not a BWB one(not needed)but I guess you could BWB it if you use the right jars not the UK style jam […]

  • Hi All, just joined up. I won’t buy chicken portions any more. I buy the whole chicken and cut it all up myself and the carcass goes into the stock pot. My children go bonkers on my chicken stew and dumplings but when I’m cutting up the chicken and they see the raw carcass its […]

  • Put the washed fruit and water into a large pan like a large stock pot. Size is important. The molten jam really rises up the pan. If the currants are really ripe, use less water. Simmer very slowly until the currants burst. This process is important because this allows the currants to release their natural […]

  • Set the oven to very hot (240C/475F). Put knobbles of lard or sunflower oil into each cup of the muffin tray and put the tray into the oven. Whisk up the eggs and milk. Add the flour and salt; whisk until there are absolutely no lumps and the batter has the consistency of thick cream. […]
