Pumpkin, Cake, Pie–Oh My!

The turkey is thawed and cooking, the sides dishes are complete, and the appetizers are lined up for munching. What now?

Desserts! And more desserts!

Using substitutions and homemade “ingredients” (and making things from scratch), I can put out a feast so much cheaper than I could a few years ago…no reason to skimp on desserts!

I tend to make more desserts than any family should really have, but there are the standards that have to make their presence…and new ones. There are so many recipes that everyone here on FBR has submitted, I just have to try them–if they’re your family favorite, they most likely will be mine, too! Why not put them on a test-run when the whole family is together?

Pumpkin is the traditional Thanksgiving dessert ingredient. References to pumpkins date back many centuries. “Pumpkin” originated from the Greek word for “large melon” which is “pepon.” “Pepon” became “pompon” by the French. Then that became “pumpion” by the English. American colonists changed “pumpion” into “pumpkin.”

The pumpkin pie as we know it was not always this way. The original “pumpkin pie” was made when the colonists sliced off the pumpkin top, removed the seeds, and filled the insides with milk, spices and honey. The pumpkin was then baked in hot ashes. No dough whatsoever. Crust haters, care to give this a try and report back?
