Road Trip Food with Kids

Jan

Good Morning everyone, does anyone know of any good road trip foods to take on a long drive with kids in the car? I am going to make Suzanne’s Pepperoni Rolls, any other suggestions for easy -non McDonalds, Taco Bell related foods? I refuse to give in to stopping there this trip (except to use their restrooms) 🙂

Summer sausage log, sliced, cheese & crackers.
Herbed cheese (cream cheese) and crackers.
Little link sausages rolled in crescent rolls (good hot or cold!)
Single size puddings, yogurt, jello (depending on the age of your kids)

my kids got a big kick out of this as simple as it was, and if you do it ahead and put it in sandwich or snack size bags it’s perfect….
we had half bags of assorted chips… doritos, chex mix, cheetos, pretzels, fritos, and i dumped them all into a bowl and mixed them up… the kids always ask for “trail mix” now… you could add some nuts or raisins or m&ms if you wanted to…. i don’t know why something so simple made them so excited…
    have a safe trip!!

go simple…i make up snack bags of dry lightly frosted bite size cereal…cheerios is great but my grandchildren seem to like the crunch…it has lots of fiber.
if they like the tortilla – wrap cheese and thin slice of turkey and slice into circle…
i really like the snack bags…just a few bites and each can hold his own..even a wet wipe in one solves the urge to get own or fight over container.
the “dip” goes into little throw-away plastic containers..works for peanut butter/honey for apples or dips for the cheese/turkey circles.

Peanut butter between two vanilla wafers – these are so good I have been known to make them for home use!

Also rice krispy treats type bars can be made with any breakfast cereal and are good in the car.

To riff off evonne, I have ordered every breakfast cereal sample I come across for a few months – as samples arrive, open them and dump them all in the same gallon zip-type bag and store in freezer. When you’re ready to make the travel bars, you have pre-mixed cereal variety. These are great in snack size bags for toddlers, too. Or use them for breakfast on the road – give each kid an individual carton of yogurt and a snack bag of cereal – they can mix cereal into yogurt, breakfast without the milk mess!

I would also say to bring reusable drink containers and refill at the rest stop fountains if you can to avoid bottled water. Don’t forget easy fruit, like grapes, cut up melon, strawberries. I know theses aren’t local right now, but they’re better desserts than the junk that comes in a bag at the grocery store and have a lighter environmental footprint.

Yessss! You all are the best! I am starting the prep of fresh carrot sticks, grapes, pepperoni rolls, snack bags (homemade of course), Ritz crackers with some cheese and meat slices, digging out the drink bottles, almost ready for tomorrow. We are going to be all set with plenty of great munchies. I appreciate all of the great ideas, Thanks so Much. I’ll keep checking back in for more ideas. 😛

My mother-in-law has a very easy recipe for Sausage muffins (or squares) that is a perfect travel food. Made using a baking mix, eggs, sausgage, cheese, etc. and you can customize it how you like it. We take them when we fly also. I will post the recipe.
