Apple butter in a crock pot!

Attribution Link

Difficulty: Easy

Servings: 4 half pints

Prep Time: 30 mins....hmmmm   Cook Time: 5 hours

Ingredients

4 pounds cooking apples, peeled, cored, sliced
(highly recommend an apple peeler corer/slicer!)
2 cups white sugar OR brown sugar (I use the brown sugar)
1/3 cup water or apple cider (I prefer the cider)
2 tablespoon cider vinegar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Directions

1. Place apple slices in a 3 1/2 or 4 quart slow cooker. I use two slow cookers and my Nesco. Stir in water, sugar, vinegar or cider, and spices. Cover and let cook on high setting for 5 – 6 hours. Stir. Cool at least 1 hour or cover and chill over night, if you’re going to freeze. OR ladle apple butter into jars. I make mine in quarts. You can use whatever size canning jar fits your needs, just make sure to process accordingly. I have also placed this into freezer-safe containers and frozen it. Both ways work great. To use the water bath method, time according to Ball. Time 10 minutes for pints and quarts.

This sounds yummy! And so easy.
Approx. how many apples are 4 lbs? Do they all fit into one 3 1/2 qt crockpot?
And can I use white vinegar instead of the cider vinegar?

Its hard for me to tell how many apples are 4 lbs, so many different sizes. As for the white vinegar it is the same acidity, as for taste? Try it. I always use the cider vinegar and if its later in the year and the apples are dry, I add Apple Cider to wet it a bit. I load up my crockpot and nesco. I have the huge one you can bake a turkey in. Double and triple the recipe and its fine. Taset it as it cooks, you may want to add more of something. We dont like a lot of sugar other days we may like more cinnamon. I also like to use a variety of apples.

Just made & canned 6 half pints of the crock pot apple butter. I didn’t use the vinegar but did put in cider. We sampled some on our supper pancakes…yum!
Thank you for posting this. You are right, it is very easy.
