Spi-Rolls, Any Way You Want Them

The other day, my niece, Sam, showed up at my house with these.

They’re chicken spi-rolls from one of our local pizza shops–filled with chicken, bacon, and mozzarella cheese all rolled into a pizza crust with a ranch dressing on the side. Also, on the menu is a pepperoni spi-roll–you guessed it, pepperoni and cheese with a pizza sauce on the side for dipping.

She has gotten quite used to me saying, “Sam, we can make that/those! For a lot cheaper!” She wanted to know how we could make these chicken spi-rolls.

I was sure I’d already made something like this. After a search, I found it already on Farm Bell Recipes–I’d called it Sausage Potato Roll (because, well, I’d put sausage and potatoes in it it!) But I do like the name Spi-rolls.

Just like a cinnamon roll, you can use any filling you’d like. Throw some chicken, bacon, and cheese in…or pepperoni and cheese…or sausage, pepperoni, and cheese…or chicken, green peppers, onion and cheese. Or trade up the cheese for a garlic-y white sauce. Add different seasonings in with the chicken. Brush with a garlic butter when they come out of the oven, or cover them with gravy (like I did below). It’s all up to you!

Here’s how I made my Sausage Potato Roll…that I’m now simply calling Spi-roll. I used a regular bread dough, but you could use a pizza dough recipe if you wanted.

How to make Sausage Potato Roll:

Fry 3 small potatoes (peeled and diced), 1 small onion (diced), and 1 small green pepper (diced). Add any spices you’d like. What do you normally add when you fry potatoes?



Brown 1 pound of sausage and drain.



Roll a one-loaf recipe of bread dough into a rectangle shape, approximately 10 x 16 (like making cinnamon rolls) or narrower and longer for smaller rolls (like the ones from the pizza shop).



Spread potato mixture and sausage over leaving one inch of bare dough on one of the long sides (for pinching and sealing together).



Roll up from the long side, pinching the end into the dough.



Cut roll into 2-inch pieces or so. Place into a greased, large pan. I used a 10 x 15.



Cover with towel and let rise, approximately 30 minutes.



Place into a preheated 350 oven. Bake until all golden brown, about 45 minutes.

Brush with butter or garlic butter. When I originally made these, I made a milk gravy using the sausage drippings and served it over top–meat, potato, gravy, and homemade bread all in one!



The idea of a “cinnamon roll” has been expanded! Put whatever you want in them! With whatever type of dough you’d like!
