I bought a paint stirrer (of the type meant to be put onto a drill), and stirred mine really well several times as it was cooling, and every time I used it for the first few weeks. I haven't had to stir it for several months now. That method seems to work great (but I also make the 5-gallon batch, so it makes a bit more sense for me).
I do this, too. It acts like a stick blender (aka emulsifying blender).
