For anyone in Michigan wanting to make a little business for themselves!  Or be looking for more of these type of items at the local flea markets!

Headline from yesterday…..

Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today signed legislation that
promotes Michigan agriculture by encouraging the production and sale of
certain foods made by Michigan residents in their home kitchens.
These foods, called cottage food products, don’t require temperature
control for safety and include jams, jellies, granola, dried fruit and
herbs, cereal, dry mixes, candy and baked goods.

Prior to this law, anything not made in a commercial kitchen could not be sold to the public.  Internet sales and mail order sales still do not fall under this new law and your gross sales can only reach $15,000.  I would love to make $15,000 selling jams and jellies!!!

I would love to make the money….not so sure I would want to make all that jelly! I wonder if that is $15,000 profit.

No, it's gross (the actual money you get from someone).  laugh Yes, that's an awful lot of jelly to make in a home kitchen….over 300 boxes (12 in a box) of jars!

Well, that is kind of exciting.  Cindy—-I can imagine you making all kinds of goodies and doing well with it.  My kids have wanted me to make jelly/jam like their great grandma does and sell it.  Nothing special—just the recipe off the box of sure jel, but the kids say it's so good that even rock stars would buy it. laugh

Well…. I bet your preserves are MUCH better than THAT!  The real praise is, “Your jams are so good a farm-wife would buy them!” and I bet it's true!  I'd definitely also treasure the praise of your kiddos more than any rock star!  Rock stars buy all sorts of things that a farm-wife would NEVER buy!!!  laugh   I'm sure they meant it as the highest of praise though,

It's cool that Michigan did that outright though!  Here in Ohio, it's very ambiguous, …and I can't find the specific law in my links, but there are a lot of people who sell jams and jellies and pickles and preserves at farmers' markets etc around here, and they say they haven't had anyone tell them otherwise.  I never hesitate to buy any of those things, but I DO hesitate to buy salsas and other tomato products from people I don't really know, which I've also seen for sale out and about.

How exciting! These days people need a little extra income.

Life is too important to be taken too seriously.
