Hello everyone, I would like to find a way to add fragrance to plain liquid store bought hand soap, I don’t want to “make my own” from scratch but would like to be able to add a bit of scent to the smaller dispenser bottles when I refill them. I know so many of you crafters are familiar with making your own liquid hand soap, if you can help me, it would be so appreciated

                                        Thank you. happy-flower

I have done this a few times. I’ll probably still do it in the future. A friend gave me some hand soap from her company. One of those pyramid type companies, the soap was supposed to be “good for my skin”. Ugh, for me, soap is soap. But the smell of the hand soap was much to be desired, so I added a few drops of some fragrance oil that would complement the original scent.

Now I have to ask, do you have skin safe fragrance or essential oils to use for this purpose? You can’t just go in and use those pretty scented oil that are sold near the candles. I have had some people ask me if they could use them in skin products and then argued with me. You need to use skin safe fragrances.

I’d start off with an unscented or very mildly scented soap. That way you can customize with greater creativity. I like to customize the store bought soap with I need a present on the fly.

Try to add a few drops of a skin safe fragrance to your liquid soap and stir in well. Let it sit a bit and sniff to see if you like it. You can always add more, but you can’t take out if you made it too strong. You could dilute it with more soap if you wanted. But it is best to start small. Everyone has a different level of sniffer. I can’t stand too much fragrance myself, but I do enjoy it so I add just a bit. Others I know can’t smell much and need more to get the fragrance. Also, some fragrances are light whereas others are very powerful.

Bleh, gee I go on and on. Anyhow, YES, you can add your own scent to store bought. I hope that helps a little.

I am wondering if your can add color to liquid hand soap. If so, can I use food coloring (like to frostings, etc.) or would it have to be something special.   I usually buy one that already has some color to it but this time I accidentally bought a clear one and my dispenser is clear.  I would like to be able to tel how much I have left in the dispenser.

After reading the question on adding fragrance or color to liquid soap, I began to search around to find some instructions as the question made me curious for an answer with how-to instructions.  I found two websites. For making your own scented, liquid soap from a store bought plain:

http://www.nwedible.com/2011/12/make-your-own-scented-liquid-soap-cheap.html

and for essential oils in case you don’t have a store nearby:

FYI:  I am not connected as a salesperson to the second website.  Just information for those who wish to find essential oils.

A little bit of food coloring shouldn’t hurt it. I’ve used that before to give a tint. It is easier to color liquid soap with food coloring.
